It's early days (game 5 to be precise) yet, and it's perfectly possible that Liam will not prove to be as good as those champions you mentioned. However, it's worth considering that it was only last year that Liam first saw the inside of a gym, that up until then he had never lifted a set of weights and had not really ever done any serious training. That suggests to me that there is incredible scope for improvement, as all we are seeing at present is raw talent. Whereas, Reiwoldt, Franklin and Brown, arrived at the AFL after several years of training in development squads, at the AIS academy etc. Even then, my recollection is that it took them a year or two to begin having a big impact at AFL level. Liam has had a big impact from his first touch. Ultimately, comparisons with other players are pointless anyway. Instead, you should all be simply enjoying watching Liam's development as a Demons player, in full knowledge that his best is yet to come. As i've said previously, he still has not had a pre-season yet, and when he's got a bigger engine plus an extra 5 ks of muscle, I reckon he'll be unstoppable. You all know i'm completely biased when it comes to our Warlpiri Warrior, so I probably shouldn't even post anything, but I couldn't help myself.

Several excellent points, what Liam already has is exciting and I think there is immense potential for improvement basis RudeBoy's arguements.

Liam has football nous in abundance plus the ability to play short and tall (often within milliseconds), barring serious injury Liam is going to enjoy a long career creating headaches for opposition coaches, heartache for opposition supporters and nightmares for opposition players.

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

I was at Casey Fields for Jurrah's first training session and despite some people saying that his kicking lacked penetration (which it didn't) from that point on I knew that he would be something special.

However, what I never expected from Jurrah is the way that he has almost completely taken the heat off young Watts. Like I said in another thread (albeit with a bit of tongue and cheek) I can see these two forming a lethal forward combination with their apparent strengths complimenting each other nicely.

CB..agree Liams rise has afforded some sanctuary for young Watts. As these two develop both physically and awareness they are going to be a huge headache. Good huh  Both can roam and dont mind it so leading them away from goals wont accomplish much other than to free up the other. Id hate to be the other coach trying to work out who to put on them. They will both deserve top defenders. Not all teams wil be able to cover them...again... tough !! lol Throw in a third forward with crumbers etc and we might just become a bit dangerous :)

Like I said earlier I think in this thread, Jurrah and Watts will in a way be helping one another. Certainly the rise of Jurrah will take some focus or 'heat' as you put CB, off Watts. I like your term 'lethal forward combination'. :)

No he looks alot better than they did at this stage of his development. Liam has that something special that draws people through the gates and makes those around him lift. A few weeks back when Davey handballed to Bennel who kicked it to Jurrah I almost wept at the sheer beauty of what I had just witnessed, when Liam then kicked the goal I thought of perfection and had I just seen it.

I don't think we are kidding ourselves when it comes to Jurrah, I think he actually is that good.

i said he was a precocious talent -that acknowledges his exceptional development.i just think we are wrong to pump a guy up who still needs to be aided at press conferences.

our football department call him the Cougar etc when they should be keeping the lid on.Blind freddy can see he can play i am sure however geelong or hawthorn would have deflected media attention away from him, especially with his background.he is not as far forward as the three i mentioned at similar ages- NOT games.

we have had our share of gun indigenous boys we could not control Farmer,Charles etc.The fact that most of you believe he may equal Riewoldt,Franklin or Brown reaffirms my point, they are elite, freaks of endurance and strength .what if he does not reach there levels or gets nowhere near them?,there will be no shame in that .do you all realise the exceptional players they are.Flash counts for little, there is so much work for him to do.look at brennan

His mentor is davey ,people will have a go at me but his career has plateaued, depite stats.he was a menace when he started,he no longer is.

we have not been down that long, not like Richmond, not like Chris Connolly.lets not create a culture of desperate hope .we need to reign ourselves in

Ability and development are two quite different things. I couldnt care two hoots if a guy can put two words together as long as he can speak footy with his playing on game day.

you make it sound if i am calling him a retard never said that and never said i would take Copernicus over carey.don't make things up.

it is early ,we build them up to pull them down,of course he likes the attention, that is the lure, it is a dangerous game we are playing with this lad.there seems to be no professional protection,no easing him into it.i am not a great fan of meteoric rises .chris connoly continues to show absolutely no empathy, just pure unbridled happiness.we need him out

what if he does ?? ;)

come on-he revolutionized the game with his arrival,he plays behind the play, sad to see him playing the Joel Bowden role,it is the easiest one at a poor club.

i think we have been a successful side since 87.no flags granted but i believed there was a culture,a win at all costs culture.we have never had an out and out champion, injuries have robbed us of that, but plenty of finals and some good tilts.i was comparing us to richmond who have been starved and now see mirages, hope we dont panic and do the same

I was there in 88 and 2000. Two days Id rather forget if you dont mind. Some pundits call getting into finals a mark of success but when half the teams of a competition make finals its really a farce . Many a coach or scribe attempts to 'spin' a picture of mollified succes by including such ( debatable ) achievements.

There is only one measure of success and thats Premierships. No one really aspires to second place and if they do then they deserve less. You can by all means compare other teams but the real test of how you are going is against your own track record.. Not since Northey have we really looked like causing any work for the historians.

What a thoughtless, unintelligent and irrelevant post. His ability to speak English at a press conference has absolutely no bearing on whether he'll be a champion player or not.

our football department call him the Cougar etc when they should be keeping the lid on.Blind freddy can see he can play i am sure however geelong or hawthorn would have deflected media attention away from him, especially with his background.he is not as far forward as the three i mentioned at similar ages- NOT games.

You clearly didn't watch any of the three play when they first started. He's still shown more than those three at a similar age.

His mentor is davey ,people will have a go at me but his career has plateaued, depite stats.he was a menace when he started,he no longer is.

Your entitled to your opinion, but I believe he is still a menace. The opposition wouldn't bother tagging him, if they didn't think he was a threat...

i had to look up trolling .i am not doing that

Yeah, you are.

Davey has plateaued?

Ha, ha.

Must be a fracking high plateau.

You know what - Nick Riewoldt has plateaued. What a loser. Trade him. He'll never come on.

Ha, ha.

And your grammar is awful, it's not a big issue but still makes an impression on how people perceive you never-the-less.

And BJ, I'm guessing that's your nickname from you user name - get a clue.

Bit precious to have a go at someone who needs assistance at a press conference then type this tripe. ;)

Farmer was a great player. Who is the "etc"???????

Credibility zero.

Methinks you may be a banned member reincarnated?

Going by your posts, I think you may need a little assistance with English yourself.

we have had our share of gun indigenous boys we could not control Farmer,Charles etc.

And the 'etc' would be? who exactly?

Here's a list of former Melbourne players with an indigenous background. Feel free to tell me which ones the club had difficulty 'controlling'. Or are you just thoughtlessly perpetuating a stereotype?

how bad are we going,he is a great story and precocious talent but he is no franklin, brown or riewoldt .we are kidding ourselves

Sorry how many goals did all the above kick in their first seasons respectively? After 4 games, Jurrah is statistically better than all of them comfortably, aswell as Fevola, Tredrea, Lloyd, and pretty much every other gun forward of the last decade. Let's not bother to mention the excitement and impact he is having on the club also. This has all been done off no preseason, and learning English as he goes! So how are we kidding ourselves that we are impressed by young Liam thus far? Good post guy. Super good post. I'm glad some wisdom has been restored to Demonland with 'bjmfcmcc' signing up!

Would you like to see that on Grand Final day RudeBoy??

;)

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I might incriminate myself!

To be honest, since Liam's drafting by the MFC, I'd consider giving up the Pies and completely jumping on board the Demons, if not for the fact that I have never trusted anyone who changes teams. I'm always very suss about anyone who switches allegiances. It's a serious character flaw imo. It's a sign of weakness, shallowness lack of character. Therefore, I have compromised by making the Demons my second team, something which would have been unthinkable before this year. I realise that most of you on Demonland will consider that to be a [censored] weak excuse, but I figure it's best to be up front about my allegiances. One thing you need to know however, is that for each and every game that Liam plays, my passion and support for the Demons grows ever stronger. Go Liam and go Dees!

Stuff the pies RudeBoy jump on board the Demons there is plenty of room.

Good mate of mine was a Carlton man then his brother got drafted by the roos and he jumped on board. No-one questioned his character. His brother was delisted without playing a game and he is still to this day a Roos member.

The heart wants what the heart wants.

My eldest Brother was on the Hawks senior list for 3 years and was asked to be on Don Scott's ticket in his failed Board challenge of a few years back.

I hate the pricks.

And your mate is a [censored]. Never change teams.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
