Natanui Grab

And also, what if we had picked up Naita, who goes on to be a star, but in three years time wants to go back home so we lose him for peanuts? Jack Watts is the man for us. Whatever happened, happened, what's done is done, and what's meant to be is meant to be.

EDIT: Jack Watts, not Jack Watt's. I would have had to hang myself if I let that one go.

I'll take goals over marks any day. Jack will kick twice as many with the same opportunities. Case closed.

No it isn't, in the years to come this will become a very hot topic.

Watts has sublime skill, footy awareness and contested marking, Naitanui has agility and a fierce determination. It will be very interesting to see the two careers develop, both have huge upside and both have slight question marks. I'm actually looking forward to watching both of them.

There's a theme to my thoughts about 'we should have drafted x over y' discussions.

Like the Rioli v Morton debate, the Watts v Natanui, Rich etc. debate is one of close margins between apples and oranges.

It's not, as I've said before, like we're looking at a Fiora/Pavlich or Tambling/Franklin comparison. Those oranges are definately a cut above the apples.

Yes, it is. Of COURSE it will become a hot topic. Doesn't mean it should be. We recruited one, not the other. And at the time of recruiting, despite Naita having created a firestorm of interest, it is widely believed BP made the right choice for the club... one that the vast majority of fans concur with. If suddenly the majority of supporters turn on Watts, and the club for recruiting him, then they would be (mostly) just as wrong as BP was.

We recruited a forward with impeccable pedigree. What more NEEDS to be said. Hence, case closed.

I will agree though that I can't wait to see both debut. Nicknat for all the reasons we spoke about leading up to his drafting, all the excitement and leaping and gladiatorial-style tackling. Watts for the fact that he looks, from the outside, to be a match-winner and could threaten to kick 6 a game in the way Roo does. I know which one gets me more excited...

EDIT: I just went for an ill-advised wander over at bigfooty where there's an All-Australian ruckman debate, and Naita's name came up (not for this year obviously)... and it occurred to me that one concern is that if he has one of those ridiculous engines, like Richo's, then the mere fact that he's a midfield player might see him get touches in more games than Jack, assuming that A: Jack only plays forward and B: The midfield has good years and bad years... Look at Buddy. People were saying he could be the best ever, and this year he's fallen dramatically back to the pack.

Just another reason why I hope they let him decide to drift further up the ground. Just give him licence to do what he wants, a la Sheedy and Hird.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
