THE AFL has settled on compensation criteria for clubs whose players are poached by the Gold Coast, but will keep them secret.

Gold Coast recruiting manager Scott Clayton has until the end of next season to lure one uncontracted player from each rival club before the new team begins playing in 2012.

The AFL revealed yesterday salary cap investigator Ken Wood would govern the compensation scheme.

The formula will take into account players' ages, best-and-fairest finishes in recent years, and rank of earning power at their club, as well as draft selection number if they have been at their club less than four years.

Hopefully we will be left behind in the Rush. We really have bottomed out at the Exact Right Time. Hopefully we can capitalize on it.

I'd like to think we could trade 1 or 2 for some handy draft picks. Not know who yet. But teams need to keep the kids coming onto the list from the quality end of drafts, or teams soon get overtaken.

our biggest problem is the amount of youth we have that could be snapped up based on 10 year potential.

i am hoping that we can offload a second tier, or future second tier player, or an older player who wont play a role in our next tilt, for above the odds reward. ie a bell, miller, newton, jamar, PJ. ruckmen might be a hard thing for the new side, so jamar might be an option.

we wouldnt get anything for these players above a trade of 5th round draft picks but we could snare a 3rd rounder in the compensation...

Sure we will have to trade something but most of our top shelf will be either Brand new or well under contract.

Miller is my biggest concern. Once our midfield starts pumping the ball in properly Brad will take marks, i have no doubt.

Not sure about Pettard, He has been great this year-considering he nearly died, he has Guts that i like & would be most disapointed to say Goodbye to.

I presume the player has gotta wanna go as well, so apart from the $$$ which we probably can't match the club would do well to create a culture and air of excitment the young player does not want to go.

You have to trade something of value to receive something of value.

I also seriously doubt that the factors like B&F finishes, draft pick # etc will have a large sway on the compensation. It will almost completely depend on who the player is, as per usual. The equation DUD X (Magical GC Fomula) = DUD Pick will hold true.

Although most people on this site believe the GC would happily trade draft picks away for our D team like Bell, Newton, Wheatley and other blokes who can't crack into the crappest side of all time (not a snipe at you Deanox).

Be happy to trade Petterd, Miller, and one of the glaciers with decent market value like McLean or Bate.

You may well be right. But it is going to be one Hell of a Draft, & these 2 new Teams are going to be Hated & Loathed by all Victorian Football supporters like never Before. (I shall even wish Carlton to beat them-"No don't make me do it!"

no offense taken. my point is that i hope we sure up the good young players, and that the only options open (ie players available) are palyers who could add depth and experience to a team that is full of 17 and 18 year olds. those

players aren't worth a pinch of salt on the open market, but where a club is looking to get a few players in with some games experience maybe to plug holes in the first couple of years while waiting for some kids to come through, or as depth, because you cant have only 18 year olds as your back ups.

if this is what happens, we will get some compensation from the league, which we wouldnt get if we delisted them or tried to trade them.

This may sound stupid but I do not think that Melbourne Football Club is high on the list of player targets for the GC17 consortium. We are a rebuilding club with no superstars and a few players at the end of their tether. The most they could do is take a few of our kids but most are signed up and they could possibly unearth 1 or 2 in the draft that year. I think most of if not all of our players are safe from poaching.

Very Harsh call. With more precise midfield delivery Miller will be a fine asset. The delivery into our forward line at the moment is a shambles, & Brad still manages to grab a few.

Why would GC consider Bate if he does not improve? 'tis why i believe we will fly under the Radar in the upcoming Frenzy, that is not to say it's a good thing. I just don't think we have tradeable players who will be out of contract that will interest a new Club.

They can take one uncontracted player from each club if that player is willing to go and other than getting the player to sign a new contract there is absolutely nothing the club can do. Compensation will be given to the club losing the player by the AFL under a formula which value the compensation pick in a later draft.

Conclusion, sign every player we want to keep and hope GC17 take a player we are happy to lose and then further hope we get a good compensation pick.

Miller has a Big Heart also that right now we need in spades.

His heart is huge when we play against the lions, tigers and dockers he goes missing in most other games. Wasn't sighted until the last quarter when the game was over. We need talent in spades we have plenty of goers without any talent Miller is one of them.

That's my understanding, but I wouldn't be holding out for what the plundered club would view as good compensation. I think the AFL's decision of silence is an indication that most wont like the criteria they've devised. And anyway it wouldn't make sense for the GC to be granted such bountiful early picks if they were then forced to part with those in the early stages of their recruiting.

Conclusion, make all attempts to sign players we're desperate to keep because we wont receive a lot back in return for those we lose.

Trading for one of their early picks sounds nice, but I'm expecting that the powers that be are hoping that the GC will be able to prise a few of their preferred targets pre-trading for relativley little loss. So their early picks will be more highly valued than we would all like to hope.

Of course, that's what a contract is for. My understanding is a player cannot be forced to go but you can imagine the Cash will be out in the trough.
