NEED TO GO:

Daniel bell - From South Australia

Mark Jamar - From South Australia: Could trade these 2 to Adelaide or Port Adelaide.

Matthew Bate: I still have hopes but if he dosnt start performing soon then its lights out.

Newton has to go nothing else needs to be said.

Coling Sylvia: This year he will be turning 24, If by the end of the season he is not getting

20 odd touches consistantly and getting goals he needs to go, as much as I hate to say it :(

Looking good so far:

Cale Morton 18

James Frawley 20

Nathan Jones 21

Colin Garland 20

Few more but id say these are the main. Ill add jack watts in about 7 weeks :P hopefully.

I think it's a bit harsh to say that Bate will go.

He has a lot of potential and he will get better. He's only 21.

On the other hand I hope and I think Sylvia will stay, as for Bell and Jamar it's difficult to speculate what will happen to them.

I don't think Adelaide or Port Adelaide would be looking for Bell or Jamar at the moment, both teams have good defences and a stable ruck formation.

If Lade or Brogan retire for Port Adelaide, I don't think they will be going for Jamar (who is 26 this year). Adelaide wouldn't be looking for him either as they have some young ruckmen in Maric and Griffin.

I think I've seen enough of Martin, and probably Bennell, to say they are knocking on the door, if not already on this list.

Warnock and Garland showed me to be an awful judge of unseen talent, so I will wait to put lines through Newton, McNamara, and Meesen.

Wheatley, Whelan, and Bell may fall to the march with youth. And Robertson and McDonald would be close too.

Serial underperformers like PJ, Sylvia, and Dunn would be the next weakest.

Bell was one of our best preseason, then he get's injured.

I wouldn't be letting Bell go anywhere!

Let's be honest...................5 weeks into a season is a little too soon to be putting a line through players anyway.

A lot can change between now and round 22.

Oh, your kidding, he's gettin' a bit long in the teeth then. We better pension him off to.

How old do you feel as a Melbourne supporters!

Creeps me out that half our list is younger than me. Makes stalking so much more illegal these days ;)

Agree Bell may be moved on to either Adelaide or Port Adelaide and Sylvia could be looked to be moved on to somewhere like Brisbane. Dunn may well be shipped off also. I think Bate will stay, think he's got a few more tickets then the other three.

Very harsh on Bate. I think we should keep Sylvia. I couldn`t bare it if we got rid of him and he went to a another club and became a champion. You can add to your looking good so far list: Martin 22, Buckley 22, Cheney 20, Wonaeamirri 20, Bennell 19, Grimes 19, Jetta 19, Maric 19, Watts 18, Valenti 22, Warnock 25, Jurrah 21, Petterd 20, Strauss 18,Newton 22(At times), and including Morton,Frawley,Jones and Garland. We are developing a good core of youngsters and with the next few years ahead I expect Mclean,Sylvia,Moloney,Davey,Warnock and Rivers to really step up and become the leaders of the club and become the face of the club, as being the older players.

Also with such a young list we need to keep in minde that some or most players can come bursting out of know where or start to really kick it up a notch at the age of 24.

So thats what tough about wich young kids we let go.

But usssually you can tell who the real no hopers are.

I agree with the above assessments and the question that really comes to mind is the following. Which of these players could contribute to winning a premiership at their best.

Yeah it freaks me out when i realised morton was about 6 months younger than me. Sorta makes me realise how young our team is

and how much more maturing they have to do.

Buckley hasn't done nearly enough to be considered to be 'looking good' yet. Same can be said for Grimes and Valenti. Watts, Jurrah and Strauss haven't played yet, so how could they be looking good? The OP was talking about players we've seen this year who look to be improving and who we can have some hope in, so I think you missed the point.

And don't get me started on Newton.

Whilst many will feel such talk at this early juncture somewhat premature I can gurantee the clu itslef has a bunch of lists with exactly this in mind. ( If they dont they are derelict ) Come seasons end we will have probably THE single most important draft for at least 5 years. At that time we will need to stock up on whatever we can lay our hands on and in order to do so space will need to be made and to do this some hard and harsh decisions and evaluations made. Those evaluations will be ongoing and will have started already.

Players needing to show something above the bar must include the likes of:

(in no particular order )

Bell

Jamar

Johnson

Meesen

Newton

Buckley

Valenti

others which must be looked at as being relevent to the "needs" of a young team going forwad must include

Wheels

Wheats

even JNr

and

Robbo

Then you have the other players which

confound for varying reasons:

Bate

Sylvia

Rivers

Take the last lot first, if ate cant show more consistency and effectiveness yes needs both ) then he may be another of those players that burnt brightly for far too short a moment. I would like to think he'll come up..but if not..well he's clogging surely. We all have opinions on Hi HO...if he can apply himslef and put in week in week out what we all KNOW he can..he's good value going forward..if he slips..he's gone.

Jared..If hehas an injury less season and can find that certain something he has , then he's an assett if he falters then you have to ask how can he take a position better used by another with a longer more consistent future ??

Wheels.. might have just seen his value slip past in injuries etc. Wheats...will have to fight hard to be amongst the best 22 soon. Robbo..he must know the end is nigh..but is it end 09 or '10 ?..same goes for Jnr. With these players you have to ajudicate on who is the better beneficiary of game time and development in respect of building a new force ??

As to the others:

Bell, a bit one dimensional and I think we've already seen his best...others have more upside in time

Jamar....maye not enough feathers to his arrows in light of others

Johnson.. a cracker season last year..not backed up.. has he already peaked ??

Meesen... must show he has more than the other wannabe rucks !! time will tell ...hence his evaluatio

Newton... just not showing enough upside ...that key position is crucial to our re-emergence as a team.. He's not the one I feel.

Buckley..another that needs to show he's a cut aove the others chasing a jumper...only so many going around for so many positions

Valenti..nothing wrong with him but if we pick up a couple of 'goers' at seasons end that are btter equiped to be AFL level midfileders then Valenti will lose his tentative grip on any show of going forward in red and blue

Some others may warrant a serious look and might revisit this later :)

Personally my list would read something like.

TRADE BAIT:

Buckley-Has dash but uses the ball as well as Rhyce Shaw does.

Bate-Needs to lift his performance this year, if he does you'd keep.

Sylvia-So much potential but still yet to realise it. Melbourne may look to stock up on draft picks.

Dunn-Bit of a goer but still yet to cement a place in the side.

Bell-Lot of young players putting their hands up for his position.

Newton-Someone like the Bulldogs could be interested. Needs to improve his kicking.

Wheatley-Wont retire at seasons end and with Melbourne's crop of young midfielders/defenders in the waiting may trade him?

GOING-GONE:

Whelan-I love Whelan but will Melbourne enforce retirement on him at seasons end?

Johnson/Jamar/Meesen-With the emergence of Spencer who will come off the rookie list at seasons end you'd expect one of the three will be moved on. At this stage I'd expect Jamar.

Valentti-Great little player but Melbourne have several similar player. eg. McLean/Jones/Bartram.

Zomer-After another season on the rookie list can't see Melbourne keeping him.

Any other names anyone would think would be on either list or any names that you'd think I've put down shouldn't be there?

Forgot to put in who was looking good sorry everyone:

Jones

Watts

McLean

Frawley

Morton

Petterd

Grimes

Green

Maric

Garland

Moloney

McDonald

Robertson

Rivers

Bruce

Wonna

Martin

Davey

Warnock

Jetta

Spencer

Bennell

Blease

Strauss

Jurrah

Healey

All of the above I'd like to think will not only be safe on the list going into next year but will play out their careers in the Red and Blue. As for the players I haven't mentioned I hope they can go on to prove me wrong. Only time will tell how acurate I am.

fair comment. It is going to be very interesting how some clubs go about their lists in respect of where they finish and their closeness to a "window" at this season's end.

I would probably think only a couple would really attract some trade. Some of the above may be seen as flawed gems with sufficient upside to warrant a chance in a new environment.

If Bate cant do it for us..would others take the punt ? and who ?

Sylvia may indeed flourish at another club..if he doesnt with us he can move on with my blessing..lol

Bell. . might be a deck filler for a club.. think he might fade away if cant make it with us

Buckley.. I like him..but only has really a half bag of talents/abilities.. add to these and he could e quite dangerous. Other team may want that chance to try.

Newton.. has a godd career in teh VFL me thinks waiting for him

Wheats.. is a bit long in the tooth in a business where youth is the buzz word

Dunn... needs to step up...think might have this year only to do it at Mfc

If GC was starting next year...some might get a gig...simply as a result of the merry go round of players and the various gaps at clubs to fill. But GC isnt real til '11 and time and opportunities will have expeired for some.

Id certainly be willing to put most anyone who isnt Definitely CORE material up for trade. After all we want the best for the club.. dont we :)

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
