What should a team expect from its highest paid player?

This is just a general question.

I would like to get people opinions on what the highest paid player at a footy club should be capable of, and/or expected to do.

For me, a clubs highest paid player should -

- have above average skills, at worst

- be able to lift his teammate and put the team on his back.

- be able to read the game and not make pathetic decisions regularly, ie. hand balling to a teammate under pressure, holding the ball to long and getting pinged or having their kick smothered...

- be the face of the club

- put his body on the line and show some balls

Would be interesting to go through all 16 clubs and list the highest paid player, and see where they stand.

Opinions please.

For me, a clubs highest paid player should -

- have above average skills, at worst (he does. His kicking was not bad today, on a day where over 70& of players were kicking floaters every time they got their hands on it. His handballing I admit, is below par.)

- be able to lift his teammate and put the team on his back.[b] (I think his efforts do lift the team. No better example than 28 minutes into the last qtr, the game over and the team unable to win, he puts himself on the line and dives to make a smother in the forward 50, forcing the ball out of bounds.)

- be able to read the game and not make pathetic decisions regularly, ie. hand balling to a teammate under pressure, holding the ball to long and getting pinged or having their kick smothered...(I do agree that his decision making has been questionable, however he is often the recipient of the ball when he is under immense pressure in the first place. I think his decision making would improve, and he would get caught less if his teammates didn't give him "hospital handballs".)

- be the face of the club (certaintly is one of them. Is in the media probably more than any other player at the club and holds himself well.)

- put his body on the line and show some balls (lays more tackles than 70% of the team. See his stats from last year, where I think he led tackling. Never squibs a contest).

Would be interesting to go through all 16 clubs and list the highest paid player, and see where they stand.

Opinions please.

I have come to expect it from ours, unfortunately.

I almost jumped the fence today, his decision-making, for a leader, is at times disgusting

Bruce works very hard each and every game, he is just not a very good footballer.

That's reality, and it's time to accept it and move on. He isn't the best, he isn't the worst. He is average, but he'll continue to play for us as long as he is putting in the required effort because put simply, we need experience and players who can run all day.

Handballing blindly because he doesnt want to take a tackle..... Has been wearing a skirt since been tackled by guerra in 05...

Spot on mate.

Unfortunately Bruce has never recovered from that tackle.

I still remember it vividly. The sound his body made when Guerra crunched it into the turf. The look on his face.

He has tried his heart out ever since but unfortunately he lost his fearlessness that day and therefore will never return to his best pre-tackle, which was phenomenal.

Jeff White is another who suffered post-significant hit syndrome from when he got kicked in the head by Steven King and his jaw almost came off.

I fear for Greeny...

Despite the above, Bruce is still a great player and I hope that as the players around his rise in confidence so may he. One of his kicks tonight in the final quarter, to Dunn in the forward flank, was glorious.

So, who is our highest paid player? It's actually a very, very difficult question to answer.

No, its not.

I fully believe that the highest paid player in ANY club should:

Have Captain like qualities (n.b. doesn't have to be captain)

That is;

- lead from the front.

- consistently perform at the highest level, week in, week out, regardless of his teams result.

- stand up and perform when he is needed the most.

- provide support and guidance for younger players in said club

- be a team player

Sylvia?

1. Turn up more than 1 quarter in 20.

2. Hit some targets

3. Make some tackles

4. Hurt when we loose.

5. Not kick up-and-under-who-cares back line kicks

6. Show some passion for the club

7. Get to training on time

8. Not break team curfew

9. Anything else I have missed

If, purchance, you are targetting Bruce  , he meets 5/6 of your criteria (and all of mine); that's 4/5 more than Sylvia.

Hahahahahahahahaha

Yze Magic has not got a CLUE as to who is our highest paid player. Over the years he has pulled figures out of the sky which have sometimes had a range of $100 grand. One time it was $450,000 then later it was $550.000! NO ONE knows the exact payments except the parties concerned. He has been on about this for countless years. YAWN!!!

GAMEDAY: Rd 11 vs St. Kilda

It's Game Day and after 2 losses on the trot the Dees must win against the Saints today at the MCG to keep in touch with the Top 4. A loss today will see them drop out of the Top 8 for the first time since 2020.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.
