Jones is an obvious in, and it would be harsh to drop Spence for Meesen (should have dropped PJ!), plus you would think Cheney has done enough to get another game.

That leaves one change, which IMO should be

In: Dunn

Out: Jetta

With our forward playing like under15's, why not give Juice a go! Ports defence is not the strongest in the league and maybe he could do some damage! We all know that we are lacking a tall leading forward and maybe Newton can fill that gap until Watts is ready! Bate just can't do it and you never know what you can get with Sylvia! Cheney definitely deserves his spot. I think that Jetta and Bennell should maybe have a game in the 2's and get a good feel of the ball. Don't think there is a point of having Bartram and Dunn in the same team. Wishing Maric was on the I/C though :(!

I am a little intrigued as to why there are no 'outs'. Seems like a fairly soft stance. The only justification I can see is that perhaps our playing stocks are so thin at the moment that we would be shuffling deck chairs.

Johnson should be dropped. His workrate wasn't up to scratch and I think Jetta needs 12 months in an athletic program to work on his pace. His footy smarts seem ok but he gets caught quite a lot for a 'pacey' small forward.

Just looking at that squad makes you realise how much more heavy pruning needs to be done..... Bring on 2012

With the exception of Cheney and Jetta, I reckon the options on the interchange are a pretty good explanation of why we are where we are. Uninspiring.

Agree

Why finalise a side earlier than you have to? Final 22 named 5pm Friday.

He is the best user of the footy on the whole list.

Absolute joke he isnt in.

Ever think Maric might not have been fit

I have a weird feeling we will win this week.

As an experiment, I wont do a game prediction and see if things change for us.

No Maric.

Bit of a joke really.

I'll take the coaching staff's word for it that they want some more miles in his legs...

as for the extended bench, i think it could be a total shakeup, with Jones the only certainty to play... I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring the Meese in, he had a good game for Casey by all reports, and Spencer didn't set the world on fire last week... PJ may have had a bad game, but at this stage he's still miles ahead of Spencer or Meesen so he won't be dropped...

as for the others, Cheney got smashed by Lockyer, so may be sent back to the twos to learn to be accountable... Jetta was quieter than his debut... those boys have been given a taste, I think Bails may let them head back to Casey and work on their game...

how I think the team will look (with players in their correct positions), however the bench is quite hard to pick and any of them could play...

This looks like a prediction to me.

You're right about us not needing one of those fanciful spiels about how Sylvia's gonna kick 7 goals though.

The side looks too slow to me. McLean shouldn't be playing he can't kick over 40 metres he is clearly injured.

Where will Rivers play they only have 2 talls in Lade and Tredrea and a midsized forward in Motlop. Martin and Warnock will probably play on the 2 talls and Frawley on Motlop. I'm worried about Rivers becoming a one trick pony like Jason Cloke was, teams have woken up to his zoning off so he doesn't seem to have a position and impact his pace is going to be a problem on the wide spaces at Footy Park I think he was rushed into the side too quickly.

PJ is just lucky that Spencer doesn't look fit enough. Spencer done that great run on the wing then looked stuffed for the entire game. PJ has to take out the Courtney Johns award for looks like Tarzan plays like Jane he is playing so bad that I wished we had Jamar back.

How does Sylvia still get a game? He can't take a mark and if he amazingly takes one he will kick a behind. We should have went for more run in Bail and Maric.

Newton should have be given a chance (although I think he won't) he can't do any worse than what the other forwards are doing.

I think the ins will be Meeson and Dunn. The outs will be Spencer and Jetta.

I doubt mclean is injured, i dont see the mfc risking the chance of worsening the injury with luck we have,

and as for comparing rivers with jason cloke.... rivers is a talented backman and deffinetly no one trick pony, he is very good at reading the play and good defender. As for colin sylvia at the possition were in the best we can do with him is play him out, im hoping with time he ill become that great player we all hope, we must let him no that we are going to give him this season to make or break.

Easily the worst Melbourne team I have seen named in 30 years.

Players play with injuries all the time Neitz played injured Robertson admitted he was injured when he cost us a pick when he destroyed Carlton, McLean proved last year that he will play injured when he went back on the ground against Brisbane. I would say his ankle is still causing him problems but not enough for him to miss a game.

Rivers was a good player he has been injured for too long to know if he still is, his season so far hasn't been great I think Martin is in front of him ATM he is doing the stuff Rivers used to do.

Sylvia has had plenty of chances time to give another young kid a go like Bail or Maric.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
