Im mates with Straussy and going out to get his no. today

What will he be wearing? Am I right in saying it will be no.13?

And what other players will be wearing what?

Posted

I wouldn't be rushing out to get his number until the club has actually announced which number he will be wearing....

All I know is that Jack Watts will be wearing number 4.

I know we've said we'll be giving Watts #4, but i'd really love to see him running around in Neita's #9 for sentimentality's sake. One champion full-forward passes the baton onto our next one... romantic story wouldn't u say?

particularly if Watts ends up being skipper one day but that's obviously a massive call at this stage... although it is one of the many qualities being talked up about him

McLean and Grimes in the way for starters

Well the only real champion full foward we have ever had in fact wore #4

Please dont refer to Neitz as a Full Forward when he was clearly a Champion Centre Half Back

Even Flower played there and he is the Best Wingman i have seen in any jumper

Neitz and Flower both played a majority of their careers out of position

Neitz had the huge body to enable him to adapt

Which makes it even more astonishing that Flower could

Neitz was more of a CHF than a FF, though the arguement of where he played most of his footy will always make the issue a grey one. And it all depends on your definition of champion. Of the MFC? Of the AFL? Of modern footy?

Personally... and this is my opinion... I reckon he was a potentially great CHF who was played deeper. Due to his commitments and the need arising, he was played in 3 positions, diluting his influence in any one. So a champion of modern footy and the MFC he was, but there'll always be guys who'll get that tag of "AFL champion" over him. And that's ok. Says a lot about him that he was all about MFC, not his own reputation. I'd have changed nothing about him, or his career... only some of the players he had around him.

Back on the numbers. Is it customary to temporarily retire a number for a season out of respect? Is that why people have neglected number 9? If not I reckon it'd be a great nod to him to give it to Jack Watts... also there could be a rather ceremonious big deal made out about it when the jumper presentation happens where Neita can hand it over... Worth considering.

What is the fascination with who wears what number?

Seems pretty pointless....I like number 9 because its bold, captivating and Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers once wore while playing for the US Olympic team so hopefully Strauss will turn out as skilled and agile as Kobe.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
