CJ GONE !!, offered two year contract, asked to be delisted. Mildly disappointing when you consider the following:

Our preference was to always keep Chris Johnson as a part of the Melbourne Football Club.

The impression I got during the year was that CJ never fitted in Dean Bailey's plans. His career at Melbourne was pretty disappointing and I wish him well wherever he ends up.

His departure leaves us with an additional young player to draft and in this year's deep draft pool, that should give rise to optimism rather than any gnashing of teeth.

His departure leaves us with an additional young player to draft and in this year's deep draft pool, that should give rise to optimism rather than any gnashing of teeth.

So we can use selection 83, or PSD pick 17 now? Not that I'm overly miffed that CJ is departing, but the depth of the draft hardly rationalises it, when we are talking about using an extra pick down the arse end. No draft is that deep.

I guess my point is that, if we do use either of those selections as a result of CJ's departure, we are extremely unlikely to get a player of CJ's ability. Not praise of Johnson, but rather the reality of those late picks.

The only genuine positive from this is that that's another senior-ish wage we won't be paying next year.

I thought it was 67 or 83.

I suppose that changes it a bit. Pick 51 is still of debatable value but I accept there is reasonable parity between 51 vs. CJ, and not having to pay his wage.

I'm under the impression that the top 20 runs deeper than previous years, but after that it begins to dwindle somewhat

I really think the club has made a mistake. A guy that uses the ball well off the half back line and reads the play reasonably well. Daniher hated CJ, and DB also didn't like him. Neither coach used him properly and let him develop confidence and momentum. He will never be a star, so in a sense it's no great loss, but he is a better footballer than lesser players on our list, and I think would have provided value if allowed to settle into a position. I know he is the one that asked to be delisted, but I still think that's a result of the way he has been treated. It's a shame.

I thought the same too. He never seemed to me like the Bailey's type of player. Just a feeling I got.

When Bailey played him for that stretch last year & he got a lot of footy, I couldn't help but feel that Bails the wiley old fox was trying to increase CJ's value in trade week.

Just like, when many thought Bate & Dunn were on the block after being dropped in the last round, I saw it as trying to give them a rocket for pre-season.

My information differs. The depth is supposed to be a lot better than it was last year and there will also be more "recycled" players in the mix as a result of changes in the draft. In the end however, it's better to go with the young blood than with someone that the football department doesn't have enough faith to give more than a year's contract.

so two coaches didnt like him? one coach who got us to a number of finals series and a grand final, and another that has publicly stated that he will build a side around youth (which included CJ if he stayed). doesn't that indicate to you that maybe there is something else that you aren't seeing? as in, he isnt going to make it?

maybe the change in scenery will do him good. good luck to him with getitng a better contract. if he sets his terms low we might just pick him up again. otherwise, he wasn't worth what he wanted.
