Can the FM's do something about the continual invasion of porn sites on this forum?

As previously advised on this site, an upgrade to the server is coming to eliminate this soon.

Just ignore the spam. We are the ones that have to endlessly delete the stuff.

Are you guys able to put in a "tag" system for posts? Where posters can tag a post they feel should be deleted, and the moderator can thus be directed straight to the post, rather than have to search?

I doubt that is the issue. This isn't BF, there would only be 5-10 new threads a day at this time of the year

I thought the easy solve would be 'moderators have to allow new members before they can post'. That way 'bigpenis54' wouldnt become a member. A valid email address would be required.

By maknig them wait 24 hours I am sure we'd cut the spam, and probably some of the useless new members too. :D

The software does not currently allow such functionality at present. Personally I prefer that not happen as there may be bona fide members (ie those who wont use bigpenis) in their tag name who get denied access. Also some of the names seem quite normal that carry the porn spam and I would normally pass such a name (in absence of content).

I understand the Web server administrators are looking at a fix which we hope will be implemented shortly.

Thanks for the interest in the issues

I am obviously not a moderator, so I don't know exactly how the registering works. But from what I have gathered from talking to WJ, it seems like these advertisements are automated posts. If that is the case, then I think the 24 hour thing would work, because their posts presumably would not hit the board unless they were joined-up members. On attempting to post, the entire text of their advertisement would presumably be availablebe to view if it were just computer-generated and the mods could refuse according to the content.?.? Of course if someone is actually taking the time to personally join up to 100 groups and then send out automated posts after already being approved, then there's not much that can be done. But I don't think legitimate posters would be refused entry, because unless there was something clearly dodgy about their application, why would you refuse them entry?

Nasher is the expert on this.

However there will also be the requirement for a moderator to be available to vet within a 24 hour period. Mods are are around but may be all missing on occassions!

Yeah fair enough.

Its a problem that is only going to get worse in the future, and it probably takes the moderators away from what they have to do anyway.

How much work does it entail apart from deleting spam? or does this site 'generally' run smoothly? It is rare to see any problems, indicating they dont occur that often, or the mods are on top of it quick.

For the record, I have deleted 10 spams. Busier day than most.

I hope Nasher can arrange the "fix" to get rid of the problem completely.

I've also deleted a few of these posts today. It's interesting that they are averaging around five viewings before they get knocked off which means the moderators are on the ball. Assuming one viewing is from the original poster and one from the moderator in question this is one of the advertising world's greatest exercises in futility but then I doubt that the perpetrators are rocket scientists.

It did get a little embarrassing when I was in my office yesterday, when the "thing" just jumped out at me.

I would prefer not to have to deal with it at all, but if the system is being upgraded to manage this problem, then the sooner the better.

What do you mean by that?

The only posts I've seen include text and links - no images.

It's not a good idea to click random links, and particularly when you're at work etc.

Forum moderators have limited access, so - in addition to spam - the main tasks seem to be dealing with user issues such as problems, complaints, rule breaches, merging/moving posts and threads. Given this forum's relatively quite, there's not too much on.

I'd guess that there's not terribly much day-to-day admin work involved, but you'd have to ask Nasher. Things like chasing up hosting issues and dealing with forum upgrades are an occassional thing.

There's a report button under each post (bottom left, under the 'favourite players' field).

Ha, funny the things you don't notice. Can i practice on one of yours?

The good thing about this whole situation is that our membership tally has gone through the roof.

Out of interest, how did moderators become moderators in the first place? PM would be cool

There might be a way to stop them from posting until I can get the forum upgrade done. It's just a matter of finding the time to get it all done. I've barely had a spare second over the last few weeks, other than for a post here and there.

i think one of the forums best features is that we can post new threads straight away

for instance, if the guy from talking carlton comes, he does not have to wait or do a number of posts before being able to talk about the match

There was a post in an existing thread on the main board that was full of some quite graffic pictures, same thing happend to me but luckily it was lunch time and no one was near my PC.

Can't remember which thread, but i think was the reason this thread was created.

I think I made a joke about the need for a female moderator (this was probably 6 year ago when there were about 90 registered users and 89 of them were guys)... and well... that'll teach me not to make feminist jokes in the future ;)

I've upgraded the software. There seems to be a few quirks in the skins now, so let me know if anything nasty crops up.

Hopefully the spammers are sorted once and for all though. We'll see...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
