Williams to the Dogs

Bye bye Williams.

Gotta say, from where I sat it looked a lot like you were boringly mediocre, and in your time took our bright young midfield backwards in the key area they looked promising in - on-ball toughness and clearance work, and defensive tackling and effort.

Still, not exactly a lucky run with the talent, and a tough time and place to be coaching. But that's all the slack you're getting from me.

Who knows, maybe at the Bulldogs, where front-running has been developed to a successful gameplan, you might be the extra edge they need.

Our mid-field was performing well enough in 06; enough for many pundits to predict a top 4 finish in 07.

Even without the benefit of hindsight, those pundits made a terrible prediction.

We were only ever going to go in one direction after '06, and it wasn't up.

You referring to anyone in particular or just blowing hot air? I have not seen anyone post that point of view here.

Nah, I just expected someone to come in here to stick up for him

brett lovett?

who would people like to coach our midfield?? and be realistic

Nathan Buckley or Scott West.....im spewing that Robert Harvey go snapped up so quickly, i would have loved him to teach our young guys gut running, and where to be and when

I would absolutely love to get Scotty West as a midfield coach at the Demons!

Whoever we get lets hope he can do a good job. That's all I ask!

Williams is no loss. Schwartz gives no impression to me he would be a good coach. West is a good idea. Shame we did not pursue Lappin who is now at the cattery.

how many full time assistant coaches commentate football games all weekend and do drive time radio in the week?

none, so unless Ox quits the media he won't be our new assistant coach

there's also a problem with him being thick as a brick and having no love for the MFC whatsoever

Paul Williams oversaw a step back of our midfield competence.

The cold hard fact is that we were the toughest tackling group in the AFL and the next year we were playing unaccountable footy and allowing 60 'Inside 50s' a game.

Injuries were a problem, but they don't excuse a lack of endeavour and ability to stay near a bloke.

Also, don't complain about the fact that we didn't have 'first use', our clearances were down in 07 and 08 but still not our worst measurement of performance.

I have no idea who is out there but there must be someone willing to take on a promising, if lazy, midfield group.

Question: what do Stynes, Schwab, Leoncelli, Lyon, Schwarz, Connolly, K O'Donnell, the Healy brothers and B Lovett have in common?

This is a serious question, not a rhetorical one.

Anyone care to hazard a guess at the answer (and it's a little trickier than "they all played for Melbourne except Schwab")?

Interesting. Fact?

I was kind of hoping Scott West would be considered for the midfield position. Anyway....

Not fact, just speculating. Though Ox was coy about a potential move to Melbourne when asked about it on The Run Home a few weeks ago.

He'd chuck in all the media stuff to be an Assistant, if he wants to give it a real crack he knows that's what he has to do. In any case, I'm sure SEN would take him back in a heartbeat if he went back to footy for a few years then got out.

He obviously had the itch for it when he went down to the Bulldogs.

Josh Mahoney to move to the midfield.

I scoffed at first... But that's not the worst idea in the world. When we go through all our campaigns to land West and Buckley, and they fail as I'm certain they will, we could look into a switch...

My feeling is that MFC is USELESS at planning for the future. I rate DB highly so far, and there's no reason to suggest he can't be the next Clarkson, but we should at least THINK about being prepared for him to move, should he have a change of heart. In modern footy, as it is these days, I fully expect coaches will become like players in that they'll switch clubs on whims, if their market-value is perceived as high.

With that in mind, it would make sense to recruit a coach that is a serious long-term senior coach aspirant, such as Ratten, Voss etc etc... If they do what Ratten did, then fair enough... But if DB wishes to move on (or is axed) it would be good to have someone who can step in, instead of someone who always had a foot out the door, like Williams.

They're all dedicated Melbourne people who would like to see us doing something other than languishing at the bottom of the pile and being regarded as a debt ridden basket case.

I'm not saying you're wrong and he may well end up being very good, but I struggle how anyone could rate him highly at this juncture.

By what parameters do you make such an assessment ??

You playing second fiddle again ? Refer to post #20.

It's either subliminal thinking or you're improving - slowly.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
