On a side note, does anyone know how much a sponsor pays to be a 'Bronze Sponsor'?

Not sure, quite a bit. I would have thought into the Millions of dollars.

What are peoples thoughts on a naming rights sponsor for the dees. They are worth quite a bit, but would mean that we would have to become somehting along the lines of the ' I-Primus Demons' or something of the sort?

How would people feel about droping the 'Melbourne' or even the 'demons'???

Comepletely hypothetical of course.

I dont think so

happy to have the XYZ Melbourne-Demons !!

just seems to be a shortage of companies called xyz !!

Well we did drop the Demons. Not many here seemed to like it, and Jimmy certainly didn't like it as it is now back.

If we dropped the Melbourne, i would struggle to follow that team. As far as I see it, we would cease to be us.

Commercialization can only go so far before it destroys the fabric of the very product it attempts to promote.

I find it difficult to watch State cricket nowadays, what with the Retravision Warriors and the VB Bushrangers. At least that the four day version is no longer the "Pura Milk Cup."

We are Melbourne.

We may not have kept the same moniker, or the same jumper, throughout our history, but we have always been Melbourne. Without "Melbourne" we are nothing.

Yeah I understand that, and tend to agree with you.

However, playing the devils advovate...a club that is suffering from significant financial hardship, may not have a product to promote/destroy at all??

Iam not up on NRL at all, but I do understand that the Dragons did it. Were they suffering financially at all???

I mean a naming rights sponsor could mean more than just a cash injection. A club could be looking at a boutique stadium, training facilities all sorts of advantages

Correct. If we drop the Melbourne we will die.

To be a Bronze Sponsor?

It is the lowest membership level they have.

If Melbourne sold their naming rights the club would lose money than it would gain.

Collingwood's major sponsor pays about $1.4m per year. I would be very surprised if any other lower-tier sponsors tipped in seven figures.

Melbourne's major sponsorship would be worth significantly less than that. I believe the iPrimus deal was worth about $1m a year.

How?

OK..have no idea of your real name..but whatever it is..imagine someone took it away from you..Now also..its bad enough that you are nomadic..struggle to put roots down and are in the sh!t financially but now something has ID-jacked you.. you are no longer you!!

How do others interacttwith you...how do you identify yourself ??

if you are no longer Melbourne...you may no longer..be .......Melbourne !! capische ??

Well you did say "hypothetical", but droping the Melbourne would find the quickest way to extinction, and would be a most thoughtless act. We would lose $$$$$$$. Melbourne is our name, we would lose all our identity, and all we have stood for. We are the pioneers of the game, the birth place. We have won 12 Premierships as Melbourne.

As Titan Uranus has already pointed out, without Melbourne we are nothing.

You ask how we would lose money? If Melbourne sold our naming rights we would lose members big time. Members equates to finance.

Mate, I am certainly familiar with brand identity and brand familiarisation, I just don’t necessarily see how taking away part of the name of a club would altimetry end in the demise of that club.

You would in essence be creating a new brand from an existing model.

Plus add to that, the mass cash injection that would be received.

Look at as I said, I am just playing the devils advocate here. There is no way on earth I would want this to happen, however, if it meant loosing an brand identity or loosing the club..i know what I would choose

Yeah I understand that you think we would loose members and I certainly understand that members means money. I just argue the fact that it would happen.

If West Coast, the Gold Coast or Fremantle sold their naming rights then maybe it wouldn't have an adverse effect on these clubs. Purely because they are so young (however still unlikely), but Melbourne of all clubs which is rich in history and tradition would not withstand such a change. Nor would the supporters.

"Melbourne" is without doubt the best name in football. It is the name that means the most to football and it's just about the only thing (along with a tall Irishman) that is keeping this club alive.

In the vogue of your writing I might suggest that the very value that a Naming sponsor type would seek is actually IN the identity of the name MELBOURNE and as such to remove it is to dilute its actual value to a third party. They might as wel be from Ballaarat etc.. The power of th association is created from the history and longevity of the club..To then hide behind a veil makes no sense ( arguably to me ..lol )

We start diluting the name..we then move on to locale.. then to its foundations..and before you know it ..we might be anywhere because it doesnt matter..and it wouldnt in that scenario. That cant be good.

No argument about the money :)

Yeah I appreciate what your saying. And perhaps your right. I just dont see it.

Again, completely hypothetical and just playing the devil....DO NOT WNT THIS TO HAPPEN BY ANY MEANS!!

It seems like a much more Americanized concept, the franchise type system where teams locations can be fluid.

An idea like this could be attractive as a brand could boast of owning a team in a professional league, whose name would then receive advertising in most articles related to that sport, every depiction of the ladder, 3 hours per week etc. etc.

I just don't see it being profitable or logical here, or even in the States for that matter.

Though i could also see in a few years time the Hungry Jack's West Coast Eagles or the Visy Carlton Blues.

Ha! You beat me to it.

I think Carltank are effectivly taking teh first step in the privatisation of AFL with their Visy appointments.

Visy Carlton Blues.

Let them scrub Carlton out 45!

The VISY Blues. Losing the name Carlton will not reduce its financial clout, at least while Pratt is there.

I can see it now.......

"Full time at the MCG and the final scores are: -

Melbourne 19.11.125

def

VISY Blues 5.10.40............."

Watching the races today from Sydney, and noticed Predatory Pricing (half-brother to Takeover Target) won the Gloaming, sporting the colours of navy blue with red yoke, together with red pitch fork. Does anyone know whether the connections, including lawyer Tony Hartnell, have any MFC sympathies or is it just a wild coincidence. Was about the only thing approaching Demon publicity I've seen for a while.

As we speak Melbourne are trying to Rekindle the Connection with the MCC. To lose the word Melbourne from our club is just a stupid Niave idea. We are Melbourne, at the moment its all we have.........

Noted the colours and had the same thoughts. Loved the red pitch fork. The correct name of the horse is Predatory Pricer. The horse has raced 5 times for 3 wins.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
