Jack Watts - Confirmed #1 Pick in 2008 Draft - Booyah!!!

I have been pretty open thus far on who we take. After seeing the video posted yesterday (Thanks Morton) I would have to suggest that we would be mad not to take Watts and take a risk on NN.

article was going well until the last paragraph

Stating the obvious. All things must be considered and it would have been remiss of them not to weigh up NicNat.

I would be totally surprised if we did not select Watts. All signs have pointed to yes. He has inferred he wants to complete year 12 in Melbourne and focus his efforts on it. The club has already been in direct contact with the family. He decides to nominate when 3 interstate clubs have picks after a Melbourne team when he didn't have to nominate until next year. NN has inferred that it would be preferable to stay in WA.

1 + 1 = 2.

Actually i would be flabbergasted if we didn't pick Watts. NN is not a markerters dream, the number one pick is. In fact, i think more supporters would excited about Watts than NicNat. Plus, regardless of who you are, I think its folly to pick someone who can't kick a football.

didn't know that martin was been groomed for a ruck post

i like him as a defender

Article lacks merit. I doubt Martin will be a regular ruck option if Jamar and PJ are there.

This wont change in 2009 even if we get Natanui. It would highly unlikely that Niknat would be prominent in our ruck in his first year unless they were prepared to burn him out early in his career.

BTW, good video M2W. Hell, there would need to be a good footballer around for us not to Watts. Although there were some great marks by Watts, he will have to expected far greater contests in the air. But Watts looks good.

dont want to pump up my own tyres but sometime ago i mentioned on this forum that this kid will be a surprise in the draft and it now looks likely!!! the feedback i got was extremely positive....... he can seriously mark and convert!!!!

i wouldnt be unhappy with using pick 19 on him

....at times when there were injuries and lack of other ruck options at Sandy.

Speaking of which I wonder how Spencer will go next season. I know of a lot of neutral observers who rate his progress and believe he could turn into a player.

maybe pick 35, but pick 19 would be way too early.

Its a prospective pick, & while the upside would be good, but you'd be picking on a wing & a prayer.

yeah, i've heard the same too & i would've thought he'd be too much of an obscure player for people to know who he is, let alone rate him.

Surprised he wasn't mentioned in the AFL MFC draft preview though, along with PJ, the Russian & Martin.

I to like Martin as a defender... but I honestly wouldn't mind him in the ruck either. He is an athletic freak for a man of his size, I could see him being a 'Dean Cox' type of ruckman after a few years of development.

can he kick? whenever I watched him I thought his kickics looked a bit dodgy. mind you didn't see a lot.

He has only played approx. 5-yrs of footy, but I thought that his composure and disposal were pretty good for the limited time he has played. Scope for improvement is there... but as we know, some players just never improve (hopefully he and all our other youngsters don't fall in that category).

I think the role he plays in '09 will depend a lot on whether Rivers comes good:

- Rivers back = Martin rotating through ruck and key positions.

- Rivers gone = Martin full-time defender

Like your train of thought and would love to see that happen, but a 'Dean Cox type of ruckman' is a big call IMO.

Dean Cox dominates the AFL in terms of ruckwork. All Australian. So that would have to be the level for Martin to get to in your opinion. Long way to go!

I highly doubt Y_M and Goose is the same person. Y_M is a great poster wether you like him or not, great comedic value how he gets people stirred up time and time again.

He is only a rookie who is raw with potential. Barring injuries I would be surprised if he got a run before mid 2010.

With good reason too.

Yeah, I know what you mean... I probably was a bit over the top in the comparison with Dean Cox, but I think Martin could play that 'extra midfielder' role that Cox plays, not be just another lumbering ruckman.

Athletically I reckon he would be better than Cox, and I think that we saw enough last season to suggest that there is a reasonable base to work from in regards to decision making, composure, and skill execution. I rate the kid highly, and hopefully he can keep improving on what he showed last season.

Anyway, apologies for hi-jacking the thread... back to Jack Watts. I was on the Nik Nat band-wagon, but after seeing the draft camp results of both he and Watts, I am well and truly in the Watts court now. Hopefully he can be our first fully fledged superstar in years

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
