I have taken some liberties with the team that could have been.

We could have taken Fevola in 98 instead of Lamb & in 99 Simon Black (T Longmuir) & Adam Hunter rather than P Wheatley & also in 01 Campbell Brown & Nick Del Santo instead of S Armstrong & L Molan & in 2000 Johncock was available ahead of D Breese.

James Kelly ended up at Geelong as part of the Grgic/Bizzell deal & there was a possibility of a trade between Ryan Ferguson for Brad Sewell.

I am also assuming we kept Simmonds, Jolly, Travis & Scott Thompson & am making the realistic assumption that with a half decent side Chris Judd would of come to us last year.

Whelan Rivers J Kelly

Johncock A Hunter Campbell Brown

Judd Simon Black Travis Johnstone

Del Santo Robertson Woanemirri

Simmonds Fevola Davey

Jolly Sewell Scott Thompson

I'change - Mclean, Green, Miller, Bruce

Consdering that we started the entire sport, we should've just locked out every other team.

We'd have 150 premierships, Ablett, Matthews, Coleman, Coventry, Mchail, Doull, Carey all would've worn the Red and Blue.

At present we'd have the All Australian team running around.

How depressing. Missed opportunity that!

Point taken and this exercise this of course is just fantasy

However its not unrealistic to think we could of had James Kelly, Travis, Simmonds, Jolly, Sewell and Scott Thompson (and probably Alwyn Davey) all in the team this year and I think the main reason we missed both Judd & Nick Stevens was that they had no faith in the future of the Club

For one, Simmonds wanted to leave and we weren't going to chose him ahead of our AA ruckman, a stature Simmonds have never reached, pretty much the same story for Jolly, just lucky for him he now has a premiership. Sewell for Ferguson rested on Ferguson's shoulders as he was contracted, and he didn't want to leave.

Judd was a money hungry $%^ and said more about himself than of the club. I wouldn't want Nick Stevens anyway. We couldn't have kept Scott Thompson as he wanted to go home, we had no choice.

As for the rest, we all know the draft lies on luck, the same teams who went well on those blundered on others. We've picked many good players when there were worse players going before and after them, the draft is luck and many of your examples were out of our hands.

I'm sorry but that is incorrect.

Simmonds did not want to leave - he was offered as trade bait because we needed a key defender (Craig Ellis) so he was part of a 3 way swap. Simmonds may not have been AA but he was first ruck for the Dream Team which is close.

He is probably paid half as much as Whitey & is not far behind him in value to the team plus he is 2 years younger.

Jolly is a big physical ruckman who goes down & kicks goals & is probably one of the form big men of the last 2 years.

We did have a choice with Scott Thompson because the year he left a Melbourne team finished last so he had no leverage - in fact if you go over the records he is quoted as saying that if a deal could not be done he would have stayed at Melbourne but Daniher decided he wanted Moloney & the rest is history.

Devastating until you realise that every single team in the competition could build a coulda-woulda-shoulda side like that.

With that in mind, it can be concluded that this thread is pointless and contributes absolutely nothing to this board.

the most ridiculous post ever....lol

Miller on the interchange bench he probably couldnt do that properly...

Apart from that i think if you looked at simmonds career and whitey i would prefer white every time

the only thing simmonds has is age.. and we are being hypothetical

I thought Simmonds was All Australian a couple of years ago?

Or maybe he was just in the initial squad. . .

Either way I'd take him over White in their current state

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
