We have no midfield leader at present. We have some rare talents with unique tricks, but leaders they are not. A leader would have the midfield functioning like a well oiled machine. Best tap ruck in the league. Midfield get slaughtered by weaker - better led - midfields.

Clayton Oliver Contract negotiations
KingDingAling replied to picket fence's topic in Melbourne Demons
Once in a generation midfielder. Thankfully we have two of them at present. Must keep. -
TMAC was good today. I think when both Brown and Weideman come back in, that we will see long searching leads up the ground from TMAC, and that will be a headache for opposing teams to match up. Brown is of similar type in that he leads up the ground, is a hard match up physically. It’s going to be near on impossible for opposition teams to combat our 4 talls. Combine this with crumbing forwards we’ve acquired lately - it’s going to look much different in 6 weeks. Today was a poor performance. But I will reserve judgement about our improvement over the offseason until we have more pieces. Midfield needs to improve and start using the best tap ruck in the league. It’s embarrassing we lose matches out of the middle. Puts May and Lever up against it.

Good luck to him. After Gysberts debut I try hard not to judge players on first glance. Not overly impressive last game on a glance, but better judges select the kid and hopefully he rewards their faith. We do need something else in our midfield and Jordan has been getting high praise from VFL watchers for a while now. Selection based on merit and best fit it seems. Good luck James

Winger, winger, chicken dinner?!
KingDingAling replied to NeveroddoreveN's topic in Melbourne Demons
It’s not left field. Rivers is the most logical answer to our wing solution. He has pace, endurance, skills, smarts, talent, and a willingness to take the game on. He will be one fine winger. I’d put him on the left wing and that way he can drive long kicks down the middle when needed, but also has the precision to spot up leading forwards. Outside of Rivers we have no one else. -
The two I saw play today - Swallow and Jordan appear a long long way off AFL standard.

I would’ve took the money too if I were Scully. We were a basket case of a club. He set himself up for life. Made the most out of a very limited skill set. When it’s all said and done Scully was an above average athlete and below average football player. He got paid millions more than footballers twice his capability. Fair play to him.

He got some things right, others wrong. Would have learnt a lot from his time at the club. From the outside looking in, it did appear as though he got better as time went on. Looks a reasonable addition by Essendon, as they now get a more experienced and polished Mahoney than we had early. Seems a good decision for all 3 parties.

Finals would be a good start. Pass grade would be to at least win a final. Anything less would be hard to keep the job. I think we’ll make top 4 though. If we can manage to find another wing player we pretty much have the complete side.

Good picks to take quality kids in an uncertain draft year. We could have our eye on a couple for rippers that either slide or aren’t rated due to not much footy played this year. Perfect picks, could be as good as 2 top 10 picks

2020 NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER AND SELECTIONS
KingDingAling replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
We are decent at drafting quality talent. Last years draft looks a ripper for us. We got Rivers late. He would be a top 10 pick if that draft was done again. Jackson also looks every bit a quality top pick. Looks like we got it right. We needed to after list management overpaid previous years and left us bereft of quality young kids coming through. Thankfully Mahoney and Taylor look to have got last year right. -
No thanks. Mentally not capable of filling the requirements of what it takes to be a full time professional footballer.

Welcome to Demonland - Pick 43 & Future Rd 4 Pick
KingDingAling replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Mahoney is useless. But this is a good trade. We basically just move up 10 spots for giving away speculative picks. Although 43 is speculative itself, it’s better than 53 in a package deal to move up the order. It’s a COVID year. If we move closer to 10-20 we could find a real gem. -
Tom Phillips - Outside Skills and Speed
KingDingAling replied to Simon Port's topic in Melbourne Demons
Phillips is a perfect fit. Runs hard all day and appears to be a well adjusted young man. He ticks all the boxes. To get a couple of nice guys like Brown and Phillips into the club wouldn’t hurt in any way. Will only benefit our list. -
At this point we need pace. He is a luxury we aren’t in desperate need of. Good player, would be a great get for most teams - not us though.
-
Might be a good draft to have some picks, so keep them, don’t trade them. Back in Baker and/or Hunt to learn a thing or two from Langdon. Brown up forward, in addition to further improvement from Weideman and Jackson could see Fritsch play more of a wing role.

Plenty of spuds to chop to cater for a medium risk high reward punt on Smith. We need another winger desperately. Punting on Smith is a risk worth taking. We have many inside type players who are relatively slow and won’t be sufficient midfield time to justify their position on our list. As well as that, even if we drop some of these players back to the forward line, they aren’t doing enough in there to even warrant selection. I’m talking about guys like ANB, and to a lesser extent Brayshaw. Even Vanders. I don’t think these players are as necessary as getting a true winger. We really do need to start balancing our list out. In hindsight, recruiting Tomlinson now just compounds on a weakness for us. So we will need to ship out some one dimensional type players and recruit guys like Smith, who will balance our team out and improve it in key areas of need.

Trade TMAC for Polec. Both are on ridiculous coin but we would get more value out of Polec, as we could put him on the opposite wing. Throw OMAC in the deal. North will need a both forwards and backs with the impending departures of Brown and Tarrant, and we need a quality wing. We get no value out of TMAC, he is done. Replace him with Hogan if we can get him cheap - which we should be able to.

He has all the tools to become a great. There aren't many flaws. He is a player many clubs will kick themselves not taking. Great kick, above average balance, willingness to take the game on, good athlete, well coordinated, performs under pressure, makes the right decisions. I could go on. Kid is special.
-
May is good with the kick outs. He uses his brains and off loads to Salem, in essence, allowing Salem to gain an extra 20-30m he otherwise wouldn't gain if he taken the kick outs himself. Its brilliant by May. He makes the right call most the time. Not perfect, but its our best option in a long while.

Goodwin should pull the lads out of this game. Make a stand. This happens to us too often. I'd like to see us make a protest about the umpiring and just stay in the sheds.
-
Hunt is a poor man's Langford - except around goals
-
In the Casey reserves.

That is all we can ask. If he is doing something productive he isn't a liability, we have enough of those and they stand out. Spargo doesn't stand out, so he can't be doing much wrong. I got time for the kid.
