  1. You will generally find that well argued and well reasoned opinions will get the respect they deserve and will evoke healthy debate. You can make the argument - " I prefer an invisible coach who is concentrating soley on football. Let the media be damned and say what they want to say- we dont need to trot out our coach or players to defend or explain. Our actions needs to be counted not words". That would get healthy agrees and disagrees. Sorry but "Neeld likes the sound of his own voice" is personal in itself and got what it deserved.

  3. ''That's a good start. And it will be interesting to call out Jack's name, for sure. I'm not sure it's ever happened before, so it will be a nice moment. But for him, it just gets started after that.'' Read more: http://www.theage.co...l#ixzz1sdb8iTiy There's no risk from their side - we'll take him with pick 3 if we're forced to - we know that, they know that, but apparently some here don't know that.

  4. I would have him in the centre, but then moving forward. He's very effective around the half forward line.

  7. Something i dont think has been considered in the thread. If he is say about pick 5 and we know there is virtualy no science in picks after 1 or 2 just a lot of luck on how they apply themseves or develop, isn't the deciding factor that we have had him in our system for almost 2 years whilst the other draftees are going into the system cold. This must change the draft dynamic. In effect we have had the chance to get 2 pre-seasons into him and as the article notes he knows what all the meetings are about and the game plan etc. In effect it makes his pick comparable to a player picked a year or two ago. We know there is no way we get pick #1 this year even if we call the bluff. Best we get is the #2. Now is that worth letting go of 2 years of development for a #2? One of those years under Misson and Neeld? I doubt it. What we are really getting is a high draft pick with a significant head start.

  8. Although he was dealing with: - jurrah's arrest - jim stynes' passing - accusations by Mifsud - criticism for being "too real" in a post-match presser that he is obligated to give That's a bit rich - I don't think he was looking for the cameras. The journos were chasing him. The other coaches have given pressers, just there's largely no one there. Remember when we were still at the junction, and Jim Stynes & Dean Bailey were bribing journos to attend by offering out bottles of wine? maybe you don't... And I've said it before - journos are a lazy bunch. Why venture to footscray or frankston, when you can just pop over a few blocks and get a story from the dees? They're probably there already cos of all the coverage they do of Collingwood - why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone? That's exactly what they do, and it leads to a boost in coverage.

  9. An inefficient disposal doesn't equal a turnover (see this good thread on BigFooty). A 52% disposal rate isn't great, but it doesn't mean half Morton's disposals are clangers, it just means only half his disposals are of direct benefit to the team. Given the way our team has been playing I'd be surprised if many of our players' disposal efficiency was any better than that. Edit 1: Just looking at the stats: Daniel Cross had 28 possessions, 7 of which were clangers (i.e blatant unforced errors) which is 25% of his disposals, but has a DE of 82%. Figure that one out. Other players in the same vicinity as Morton for disposal efficiency were other hacks such as Nathan Jones (55%), Brent Moloney (53%), Adam Cooney (58%) and Matthew Boyd (58%). Edit 2: Morton also had 8 contested possessions, so the stats also refute your assertion that his possessions were "cheap". Furthermore, I disagree with your implication that there is in fact anything wrong with winning "easy" ball - uncontested possessions (as a result of run and spread) is something we severely lack. I'd love it if Cale (and indeed everyone) could get a few more "cheap" possessions; they might lead to some more goals on the bloody score board. Don't you just love statistics?

  10. They don't have to believe he is top 3. All they have to believe is that we will take him at 3. To GWS and GC (and all non-expansion clubs) this isn't about getting Viney, it's about making us pay the premium price for Viney. And we will pay whatever price we have to - we are committed. 'Veale Deals' for both or Viney at 3 - these are the options.
    2 points
  11. Guys, everybody knows we will take Viney. For GWS to worry, they'd need some doubt. They also have lots of talent already. They'd get viney - a tought kid that we'd put 2 years into. They'd still do alright. There is very little risk for them and a relatively larger risk for us. There is no doubt and for them little to lose. Billy, I think that you are completely wrong with how you balance these issues. The other issue is urgency. We need to find talent fast because we risk having a black hole of leadership/experience. We are already on the way. I can easily imagine a scenario where scully leaving is typical: we get draft picks, they show a bit and leave because the club loses all the time and have no experienced role models that are any good. WE become an incubator for other teams. Hell, we are just about there now.

  12. I would be blown away if we don't take midfielders with at least 3 of our first 4 picks. Absolutely we have invested too many draft choices trying to find the CHF of the century, but It's our mid field that is a shambles with holes everywhere.

  13. As others have said, if we rate JV as top 5, we simply take him at #3. But if we rate him as 5-15, we call Sheedy's bluff and nominate him 2nd round. If GWS bite, they will then have to take JV at #1, handing the 'true' #1 pick (Whitfield?) to GC (who by the way will be their major competitor in the years to come) and the 'true' #2 & #3 picks to us. We get our early picks effectively upgraded by one, courtesy of Sheeds. TS, also courtesy of Sheeds, will have done us a favour by demonstrating the Vlad-approved behaviour for a #1 draft pick who really wants to play for another club. In his 2nd year, he refuses to sign a contract with the club that picks him #1, while making all the "right" noises, while pulling the club apart in the process, and playing at half-pace for the small part of the season when he's not "injured" (that OP can niggle for years, you know!), then he signs a contract during the trade period for the club he wants to play with. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. JV follows the TS script to the letter, and ends up with us in 2015. Everyone will know exactly what he's doing but, having so enthusiastically endorsed TS's behaviour, Vlad can surely do nothing about someone else doing exactly the same. So at the start of the 2015 season, Sheedy will have effectively given us 3 out of 4 top-15 picks (4 & 12 for TS, plus JV) in the best draft in years, while effectively upgrading our 2 top-5 picks by one position. In the meantime, his #1 pick in that same draft will have vanished into thin air, by means of the exact same strategy that he used to snare TS. So bring it on!!

  22. You've just jinxed them, you know that right? Kobe seems pretty confident, says he expects to win the championship. But they all say that I guess. Patty Mills all the way (although I won't mind if the Heat get there). They've been resting their big 3 the last few games so Patty has had some good minutes, done fairly well too. The regular season is now over. The Charlotte Bobcats now have the dubious honour of having the all time worst regular season percentage. I think that means Jordan has now been involved in the best and worst seasons? Here's the first round schedule for anyone that's interested. 27. I don't know... I think our balls are being cupped. I'll explain: Our ineptitude is the only reason why Viney is even a chance of being called out in the second round of the draft. As 1858 outlined - we have been pushed into a decision on Viney we didn't think we would have. We would have spent Pick 8 on him. And had Pick 9, 14 and 24(ish). Now we are looking at Viney at Pick 3. And have Pick 4, Pick 12, and 24(ish). Our draft lot has shot up significantly even if we don't get Viney in the second round... But it would be very good to get him in the second round...
    1 point
  28. Agreed. Too bad we didn't have him last season, he would have fit right in to our Round 19 side with a performance like that!

  29. You're living in dream land if you think we won't take Viney with whatever pick we're forced to, and that Sheedy and Allen won't force us to use pick 3 unless we give them a reason otherwise. btw, I can even think and chew gum at the same time!

  31. OK I'll put up ... With acknowledgement to 1858 that the AFL might not approve the trades ... Here's offers too good to refuse: Our mid 1st round compo pick 13 to GWS for their 2nd round pick 23 and their 4th round pick 59 Our 3rd round pick 43 to GC for their 4th round pick 60 That's a nett for us of: In: 3, 23, 59, 60 Out: 13, 25 (Viney), 43 Gives us 3, 4, 23, Viney, 59, 60 in place of Viney, 4, 13, 25, 43, 61

  32. So much rubbish. Just pick the best player available, which will be a mid. FORGET about pace, just find a midfielder who can win the ball and find the ball. If he has pace well its a bonus. So much crap about pace and athleticism etc etc bla bla bla. Just find me the best dam FOOTBALLER with a good football brain.
    1 point
  33. I like the idea of him using his pace and aggression to win the ball in the middle and give our forwards a chance. Goal-scoring midfielders are gold in today's game, and that is exactly what he is.

  34. I say smalls all the way. We need some serious quality in the midfield, as well as a crumbing forward and a back pocket. We need to use our high picks to fill in these holes. We have more than enough tall timber in our forward line to see us through the next decade or so.

  37. So true . I find it ridiculous and totally childish when fellow posters "urge" others to do more on this site . If they feel so strongly about it they should go down to the club and volunteer their services . There's always room for volunteers at any club . I often think these "preacher types" probably do very little themselves . Nothing if the truth be known . I doubt if they even go to games . Just want to take anonymous potshots . Weak individuals . And tiresome . And I'm not taking aim at you 'Gonzo' . I got the joke ! And I'm sure you are genuine . Reminds me of a coach I had once had who went off his head about the low numbers at training one Tuesday night . We had to do extra laps etc etc but the players who weren't there got off scott free ! Go figure . He only coached for one year .

  40. What a nonsense - there a lots of other clubs that have their home at the G . The MFC offer lots of different levels of memberships and "clubs and rooms " like the redlegs etc with different levels of facilities that has nothing to do with the MCC. I would suggest that our attachment to the MCC plays zero part in influencing or attracting new membership.

  42. Joe felt uncomfortable being amoungst the common man- their loud mouths and unwashed ways was a turn off. Joe swifty returned to the safety of the MCC, where his barret wearing friends were eating watercrest sandwhiches and proclaiming "nice goal number 11" followed up by a subdued round of applause and a sip of his English Breakfast twinnings.
