Aussie vs Valenti

I for one would love to see Valenti racking it up in the midfield but im interested to see what the majority of people want in the short term

Valenti seems ready to go, and is probably more ready for AFL football than Aussie, but as has been stated on other threads, we have many players like Valenti and he may not add as much to our senior list. i think both of these players would make a contribution to our side...

aussie would give us some x factor in the forward line, with davey playing up the ground... while valenti just knows how to find the footy, especially in the centre square...

valenti for me, as i feel he would be a more consistant contributor, and would be a welcome hand in the midfield...

I would say that neither are likely to get much game time, even if they do get elevated, however I think Valenti could probably cover holes left from injury better than Aussie. Even though Valenti is a class below most AFL midfielders, he can still find the footy at senior level, so he could still make a solid contribution if selected to play. Aussie is far too raw, and doesn't have the experience of playing against AFL listed-players like Valenti has.

I am more concerned about a prolonged injury to a guy like Grimes who was selected with big wraps about his ability to make it.

The choice is between a player like Valenti (a Godfrey replacement) and Aussie (shown little and is raw).

You've obviously never seen Valenti play. On what basis does he compare with Godfrey?

As for Grimes, how do you "work hard" to get him back? Given his history of injuries, why not rest him for the full season, and allow him to make a slow recovery. As you say, he comes with big wraps on him, so why put the pressure on him to make a speedy recovery.

Grimes' injury was always going to take him awhile to get back to 100% and I completely agree with you that he shouldn't be rushed. I don't understand how anyone wwould be prepared to rush him back early and risk doing permanent damage, ffs he's only 18y/o.

As much as I and RR would love to see Grimesy up and going, I think you make a sensible point Jarka, after all we want Grimesy to win the "Cox Plate" not the "Golden Slipper".

As for a the rookie list...I'd plump for Valenti at this stage, and as for slow leg speed, ummm....Sam Mitchell, Greg Williams, oh and some bloke called Archer who the Cartel Football Club passed up on because he too was too slow - think he went to North and played a couple of games and did OK.

I get the impression that some people will glaze over getting Grimes back fit with the "thrill" of elevating either a fringe player or an uknown off the rookie list. Grimes is scheduled at this point for 6 to 8 weeks off. Who said anything about pressuring or rushing the kid? Just looking at every opportunity to have him available and fit. Let wait and see what Grimes situation is in due course before talking of rookie elevations.

You don't know that. He's only played at VFL level. Reserve judgement for a time when he has played a few games.

I'm sorry RR, I just don't know how you can make such a sweeping assessment when you havent seem him play at AFL Level during the premiership season. I understand all you have to go on is what you've seen thus far but some players react differently when put into the real thing. He might become inspired and proove all his doubters wrong.

I'd be happy if Aussie was promoted. Saw him twice (Geelong and North) and he improved 100% in his second showing at Cranbourne. Kicked a nice goal and set up 3 others with pinpoint passing to Neitz and Robbo. His major weakness is his puppy-fat. Although he looks pacey, some of his defensive efforts against North were un-AFL like, while others were fantastic - He received a couple of holding-the-ball decisions.

Aussie playing in the forward line would also release Davey up the field.

If Grimes is out for x amount of weeks, you may as well promote either player. I think both will make a minor contribution to the team.

i'll take Valenti simply because many of our midfielders have injury issues and he is more likely to be needed as depth

I went with Valenti. I think he is ready to take the next step. He is a ball magnet and if he can become a bit quickey with disposal then i think he will be a good hard player for us.

Considering they're rookies, you'd think that even if we had a LTI, these two should be way down the pecking order when it comes to a spot in the 22.

That said, I voted for Valenti. I watched the Geelong and North pre-season matches, and Aussie didn't make the same impression he must have done on others. Valenti looked alright versus Geelong.
