BEST

CASEY DEMONS Heath Johnson Bonner Kentfield D'Angelo SInnema

plus I would add Ethan Stanley. He was very good at the contest and I like his run and spread.

I'm sorry picket, but as a card carrying member of IPS (International Pedant Society), I have to say that makes no @$%@&^ sense!

The Nova? Sure. The Astor? Absolutely. Village? OK.

But Home Theatre System as a play on Cinema? Nup.

I mean a home theatre is almost literally the opposite of a cinema!

Xavier Taylor was ok v hawks. Showed glimpses but is still developing and would be unlikely to debut in the first half of the year. Showed good composure with the footy. He’s a good mark and had a good intercept late in the game. With Lever, Turner & Howes ahead of him for the role, I’d say let’s see XT develop at Casey.

Luker Kentfield is a key forward. I like his aggressive style and has good marking. Simple goalkicking style. Likely to debut this year if he stays fit and healthy. Although Mihocek and JVR are ahead of him.

Key defender. With May retiring, we have the need for another big key defender. Adams struggled again and hadn’t physically developed. He needed a summer in the gym but doesn’t look like he’d bulked up. I’m not sure he will make it.

Thanks Spirit.

Would you consider 5.1 Dts?? Actually Box Office or Boxy is pretty catchy!

Jeffo - looked electric early, aside from his set shots he’s just on a different level to the VFL. Now to bridge the gap!

Kentfield - thought he looked sluggish until he had a good run in the ruck. Bit more confidence in the knee and he’ll push up.

AJ - pretty solid.

Hendo - only played a half I think, not perfect but looked to have his touch back.

I liked Heaths game.

Matthews - great chase and commitment

X Taylor - think he took a big step forward, made a heap of mistakes but there’s a vision that makes sense.

Thoughts on the new VFL guys after 2 weeks:

Cheffers: A bit of a shuffly runner and unusual ball user but one I’m absolutely watching. Can really stick a tackle and his smother/take the ball/run in to an open goal was super slick.

Stanley - pace, smooth kick, playing the Windsor role. There’s clearly worse guys on AFL lists.

Sinnema - extremely impressive for a first year kid. Probably just lacks a yard of pace or elite kick for a small outside runner. But he’s giving it a great go.

D’Angelo -24 year old scrappy inside mid with an unusual kicking action but has stepped right in to the middle and taken on AFL listed mids. Much needed soldier.

Gatt - half back/wing who has a real crack. Nice find.

Scapin - smooth mover, need to see more

Pipicelli - undersized forward/ruck who has a dip. Big Wally Pip!

Laplanche and Craven we saw last year. Both did admirable jobs across half forward.

Um if Jed Adams was in the Best, whoever wrote this must be Mr. Magoo. He had 7 maybe 8 goals kicked on him and was really found out big time.

I think that was actually closer to 9.

He had a nightmare game and atm I can't see it.

I didn't find Kentfield's performance overly compelling (not to knock him - I'm a fan). I think Jeffo had the better game and would expect him to be first in the pecking order for selection.

What may complicate things is Kentfield's ability to chop out in the ruck

Matthews, Taylor and Onley are about where I thought they would be. This is a developing year for them and will be interesting to see how they go in the second half of this year. Then it's a big preseason and the confidence that goes with it.

Stinga, I'm interested in who you think would be more likely to get a call up this year? I think Onley may be a distance away and Taylor too slight for where they may wish to play him

19. Xavier Taylor  Developing

20. Thomas Matthews Developing

21. Matt Jefferson Ready to go

26. Jed Adams  Struggling

27. Max Heath Absolutely bursting , so ready to play AFL

38. Oscar Berry A lot of development ahead

39. Ricky Mentha Jnr Developing

40. Riley Onley Developing

42. Aidan Johnson  Ready to play

43 Jack Henderson  Not quite ready

44. Luker Kentfield Ready to play

45. Andy Moniz-Wakefield  Ready to play

Did you watch the game- Xav Taylor was fantastic, played on Dear and held him all day. Only go a couple of late kicks when he was off the ground. Why does he need to get into the gym- is he being thrown around in contests

IMO, Mathhew's is no chance whatsoever of being selected this week, next week, or the foreseeable future. I would not be surprised if he doesn't play in the seniors this year full stop. But if he is, it won't be until the back end of the season.

Likewise, Heath is also no chance of being selected this week, or for the foreseeable future (assuming no injury to Maxy). He'll get a go at some point this season, perhaps as a trial of using two rucks or in the unlikely even they rest Maxy at some point.

And i can't see Xavier Taylor coming into the ones anytime soon either. He's got some work to do at VFL level, not to mention some serious time in the gym, before he'll be considered for senior selection.

Whether enjoying Picket’s Home Theatre 5.1 surround sound or rolling Jaffa's down the aisle at Bentleigh Hoyts. Auditions for ‘Tarzan Big ‘G’ swashbuckler were seriously on, Easter Sunday at Casey Fields.

Question is who’s competing for what role? Both AJ and Luker were able to pinch hit in the ruck to give Little Max a breather. Definite ++. Tackles AJ and LK got on the team sheet 2+3. Young JEFFO he’s the understudy.

Casting call? Director requires a leading man who has physical presence, footy skills and a capability to maximize limited opportunities. Add a hint of mongrel.

AJ and MJ have had a go in last year’s pantomime. Both have had an opportunity to go back to Casey reflect on and refine their performances.

What was paramount in yesterday’s main feature. Was the whole team physical defensive pressure applied against the opposition. Cracks appeared in premiership contender’s facade. Which were exploited by the Demons’ dare.

Adding that to the aspirants resume. l’m backing Luker when he’s good and ready. Got full confidence in his body. But on one good leg a performance full of promise.

I think Kentfield is ahead of Jeffo because he can second ruck and I think they want him in there for that soon. Ultimately I think our future talls will be JVR, Jeffo and Kentfield and it will be a good mix.

Agree.

I'd add that Luker is instinctively hyper competitive, and I don't think jeffo is. And all coached love natural competitors.

That daid Jeffo probably has more natural talent. I'm not selling my Jeffo shares yet

Are you serious? We are starting the season with a match, then a bye, then our second match, and another bye????

This needs to be put on the agenda asap, it's a deadset joke and it compromises development and competition integrity.

You have my vote Pates but the media seems happy to ignore it and no criticism from the media means the AFL has interest in changing anything. WE need Collingwood to complain that would get some interest by the AFL to change the VFL. Even the name i stupid. The competition has teams from QLD, NSW and Shortly Tasmania.

Agree with this summation, I have not been a fan of A.J BUT... I thought he was excellent yesterday, takes a mark Busts packs and kicked some Good goals. Luker was also very very good as Well. MOOSE Heath was phenomenal, Even Hendo another who in my opinion is not quite up to it was good yesterday. The Enigma is Jeffo, He could have kicked 5 yesterday and put himself in dangerous positions. He dished a couple of as well and is a very Pure Footballer. Plays a lot like Jack Gunstan and WHEN he gets his chance I trust he wont let it slip!

Three CERTAIN things in life Death, Taxes, and this ABOMINATION of a competition, oh Memo to Casey Fields catering.... It is totally unacceptable to totally RUN OUT of food before half time save for a few second hand chips... GET UR ACT TOGETHER!

Serious question.

Can AJ move back? He has the athleticism and the grunt.

We need another key back for the big boys and this might be his best chance of developing a senior career.

I thought Petty did some good things. Luker with 4 Goals was good, but to me looks a tad slow. Had a day out though but limited possesions. Did very little first quarter and a half. Will get his chance at some stage!

Only 6 touchs no goals dropped a mark. Has had a poor year. I doubt we can get goals out of Petty, but we can get goals out of Kentfield. Unlike Johnson and Jefferson he can kick, Jefferson and Johnson let themselves down with their kicking. If they all have dirty days you could get 1 or 2 goals from Kentfield like van Rooyen he's a good kick but Jefferson and Johnson will stray them.

Well as we know Werridee... We had our chance to trade him... I would have in a heartbeat!

Jeffo minor flaw in his kicking technique, which I am astounded his coaches have not picked up on and rectified!

VERY VERY Interesting Question, time maybe to try at Casey! I'm all for it!

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
