Commentators saying sold out stadium. I must have a very different definition of 'sold out'.

I guess 1/4 of the crowd just didn’t show up

I think a lot of people are missing the point which is Geelong got smashed by Gold Coast and look terrible.

Dangerfield is almost spent and Cameron will make a difference but second favourite for the flag? not a [censored] chance

I thought your defensive pressure was right on point in the first half No. 31 and it does look like they want to move it more aggressively this season with different angles. Walsh looks as fit as he's ever been.

I didn't catch much of the second half so I'm just going off how the scoring unfolded but do you think the overall fitness is there for the Blues? Their ability to run out games has been a bit suspect in recent times.

There are definite issues with fitness, similar fade outs to last season. Admittedly, it was humid up there, north of the Murray in The Nepo Baby territories. The Swans are super fit and conditioned, perhaps even too much for early in the season 🤔

Anyways, the other Northern Nepo Babies dusted up Geelong so not feeling as morose as this morning 😁

Just heard a tv commentator say that the GC Suns fielded 12 First draft picks. Twelve!!

AFL is becoming more like the WWE as each year passes with this this tilted draft system and moronic concepts like Opening Round 🙃

Maybe how the AFL has sold out the fans.

Watching on Kayo is expensive. Taking a family is expensive.

Maybe that's the definition of selling out?

UGH

That’s how many Dees fans see it, Macca. But I’m quite sure that’s not what Tracc has set out to do.

plenty of noise of certain players, good on King on making tough decisions

Those decisions were made (long) before King arrived.

Please GOTD… leprechaun???? That’s an insult to us Irish folk.

Couldn’t say his name after he threw Gawny to the ground and stood over him which is what Petracca did tonight.

No, of course not but the comment was more about what you said (D's fans)

He was fantastic tonight and because we don't care for Geelong, him dining out on them tonight was good to watch

I found myself wanting him to keep up his dominance. Really strange but I feel that way about Hogan all the time. And Neal-Bullen

It's hard to hate premiership players

Less than 20,000 in attendance to watch Brand Petracca.

This part of the story I just can’t get straight. From the guy I thought wanted the biggest stage, he went to a club that will send him into obscurity, where even their Brownlow medalist will be a forgotten player.

It looked like a pre-season game tonight. I’ll wait for the real thing.

I didn’t see it. I turned it off ten minutes into the third. One can only take so much of a whitewash.

We’ve got an early club house leader for for worst question of the year in a press conference:

Journo: as a lover of football, you’d be happy that Petracca has settled in so well up in QLD and played a great game tonight.

Chris Scott: Yep. Rapt for him. Great.

*end press conference*

What a person desires can change with time. He did at some point crave playing in front of a massive crowd and more than once had a go at our fans for not turning up. But more recently, changes in his personal life meant that living interstate was more of a priority. At some point in the future he may again want to play in front of huge crowds but unfortunately for him that’s never gonna happen with the Suns.

I feel a bit crazy, but I really struggle to believe that’s how many people were at that ground. It’s a tiny venue and there were a lot of empty seats.

Capacity is 27,500 and 19,859 is essentially 3/4 full.

That did not look 3/4 full to me at all 😂 maybe I’m just really bad at judging crowd number though.

As much as I don't wish him any ill will, I am somewhat annoyed.

It certainly looks like he's applied himself more up there. Faster, clearer. Showing far more composure hitting targets.

Of course maybe he needed the change, and maybe the team has others so he doesn't have to do it all. But still, we could sure have used the petracca of last night over the last few years....

I have said this since I started following footy, as it allows me to look at things a little deeper. After the first 6 rounds, some sides are a little slower to start, while others burst out of the blocks. The competition studies ball movement from the clubs and reacts to it. After that, you get a good idea.

Looking forward to:

Clarry having 45 and kicking 2 snags today.

McVee keeping all of Close, Dempsey, Miers and Jack Martin goalless while having 30 touches of his own next week.

And Spargo kicking a 53 metre goal in his North debut.

Brayshaw trumpeted sold out last night. Stadium capacity is 25000. So it was 80% full at 19500.

Trump didn't invented fake news. The AFL did.

And most had left by end of the game.

Best wishes to Trac but welcome to the big time QLD style.

He wanted out of Melbourne/Victoria for non footy reasons

11 academy and priority picks in Suns team

Anderson (AFL priority assistance pick)

Suns Academy- B Uwland, Z Uwland, Davies, Graham, Read, Lombard

Priority zone pick - Farrar, Jeffrey

Priority VFL pick - Clohesy , Sam Collins (special assistance package VFL)

Plus … Jake Rogers was best on ground in Suns VFL practice match … plus Jed Walter …. Plus Dylan Patterson top 5 draftee plus Addinsall plus Murray.

That’s a bonanza of AFL generated bias that is delivering a very powerful squad.

Throw in the high draft picks of Miller, Rowell, Humphrey, King & Andrew (stolen from the Dees)

Throw in smart trades like Witts, Long, Noble , Rioli, and now Petracca.

Time to cap the academy system at max 2 players per year but that should have been done years ago & its too late now. The Suns will be a power over the next few years and beyond.

Vintage Petracca

Certainly not 2025.

Clearly playing happy. And happy to play. He was not last year, and if he had stayed probably not again.

I think Clayton will be the same

Geelong are 3 weeks behind in training

They will be better than last night

AFL must be thrilled with the season start.

It's pretty clear their main focus is making inroads into NRL heartland.

So, two games in, two Victorian teams drubbed.

👌

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
