I don’t think I’ve read or heard what the explanation was behind possibly the greatest 40 minutes of football EVER when we won the grand final in 2021

Was it Goodwin, providence , fate or luck?

Feels like last week! I really thought we would get another one after that. Alas not 2023 still haunts me as does 2022. I always said I would be happy to see one so cannot complain I suppose

Absolutely dismantling Geelong the week before was almost as satisfying and unbelievable. Max kicking snaps from the boundary out of the ruck and from outside 50 on the run.

That whole 4 weeks was somewhere between belief and divine intervention I think.

I'm totally the same. Not being there in person watching it at the G still leaves something unforfilled for me.

100%!

A lot of my friends say ‘at least you’ve seen one’

I always say, my family (including all you demon fans) and I have been going for years which included a time of absolute beltings, couple of nearly winless seasons, pouring rain and cold. A time we thought our club may no longer be around and a time we were lucky to get a few thousand at the G.

There’s no way I’m the only one who sat at my seat at the G, soaking wet surrounded by 5000 other demon fans thinking ‘it’ll all be worth it when we see a flag at the G’ with a slight eye twitch haha

All for it to be in Perth

I fear I might be in a very significant minority, but is there anyone else on here who would not have expected to be at the 'G, had it been there, and so is not burdened by a lack of fulfilment? (This is sacrilege, perhaps! - but we are Demons 😉)

I was there for 1988 and 2000, but those miserable experiences (though joyously not repeated on the night in question 😊) aren't what influence me now. Age? The whole ticketing miasma? Crowd aversion? AFL overhyping? Cost? And with what I felt, almost constantly, from 21 August, through September, on the night of 25 September, and well into October 2021, and what I saw on the big screen and other media across that time, I'm imperceptibly short of fulfilment, if at all!

To be honest joeboy having watched the Granny dozens of times and “Sound The Alarm” numerous times I believe it was a healthy dose of all of the above, ahhh! how sweet it was.

The Bont had been named by BT as most probably Norm Smith just before Harmes to Fritta. I think it was that a few Top Doggies ran out of steam, and we then collectively grew an extra leg. Gawn handing over to Jackson was huge.

A momentum swing like the tolling of an almost forgotten bell.

What an odd question

By my count, it's even...

Yep, I see the door...

From an analytical point of view, we had 18 goal assists (from 21 goals), which is an incredibly high percentage and perhaps the most ever in a GF. I know you're specifically talking about those glorious 40 minutes, which I think highlighted this stat. Goal assists need correct decision making, correct execution, and then accurate goal kicking (!!!!). Its very hard to get these all right and even harder to have a string of them for more than a quarter. Even Cats thumping of Port in 07 didnt have as many GAs. Our dominance wasnt the result of luck, umpiring or individual brilliance. It was a team effort of consistently excellent decision making and execution. Its very rare to pull off for such a sustained period and of course even rarer in a GF.

From an intuitive point of view, they 'dropped their heads' after Sparrows goal to Brown (amazing kick to advantage GA) at the start of the last, we had all the 'momentum' and just buried them.

Tying this back to 2026 btw, last year Geelong had multiple games of 20+ goal assists last year. One in the year before. This is quite rare and speaks to a team with excellent 'forward connection', the one thing that stopped us winning multiple flags imho. The fact we have their (assistant) coach under that era may well end up being an absolute brilliant goal assist in itself.
