I’m starting a new thread as opposed to posting the following on an existing AFLW thread, ie. preaching to the converted.

Our W team is deserving of more support than they’re currently getting, in particular with regards to attendance.

We’re second on the ladder and haven’t dropped below third all season. This despite injuries to some of our best players.

The players work so hard, always. Training is never for S&Gs, every single session is hella serious and intense. And the majority of them work day jobs out of necessity. They ain’t running around on a million dollars pa.

Not everyone is into women’s footy… I get it. But we’re all into the Dees, right? The girls are Dees; they play for our club in our jumpers and they’re super proud doing so.

Even if you’re not interested in the W at all, maybe you could still see fit to attend Sunday’s QF. It’s at Ikon which is inner city. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for under-18s.

Please, please, PLEASE try to make it to our match on Sunday. You wanna feel appreciated? Well, you will be, wholeheartedly.

End of grovel.

I'm stuck in Sydney but have arranged for my family in Melbourne to go along as a Dees Delegation 😁

Love supporting the women - even if from afar ❤️💙 They always play so well, and bounce back when they have an uncharacteristic moment. Hope the men take a leaf or two from their book next season...!

Got two tickets so my daughter and I will be there. Go girls!

Perennially stranded in Sydney. I think I'm more annoyed at not being able to be part of the emergence of the women's game than even about missing the men's season. This is a time which will have future medals and trophies named after it!

I've PMd my apologies to @Ghostwriter She knows the special little support I'll be sending through the ether at the first 'bounce' 🪕

Just wanna make sure nobody thinks I’m trying to guilt folks into attending… that’s Plan B. Begging is Plan A and that’s where we’re at… for now. Plan C, should the need arise, is bribery: if Demonlanders turn up on Sunday I promise to be less annoying, as difficult as that would be. Don’t make me put Plan D into effect. Issuing death-threats is never a pleasant option 😁

Just turn up, guys. You won’t regret it. You’ll see a dedicated, proud team of players who play for each other, and for the jumper. There’s not a diva amongst them.

See y’all there!!!

Great post and I heartily agree with the sentiments. This team is not perfect, but they will never lose due to lack of effort and commitment.

I'm attending my first woman's game usually just watch it on tv. Should be good.

1.05pm on a Sunday is rubbish timing. I have kids commitments. Anytime from 2pm onwards would have worked. Or the Friday or Saturday evening games.

WILL!

You’ll love it, Werridee. I guarantee your first W game won’t be your last 👍🏽

Crazy to have a Qualifying final on Sunday 1pm.

Should be Saturday night at IKON in front of a big crowd. No sport on at the moment, so would be great for TV ratings and exposure

Regardless should be a great game and hope the girls get up

As I've commented before, that would be going too close to promoting the women's game. 🙄

How can they not schedule a final for Saturday night? I know this year there was technically no Sat. night game for the first week of the men's finals, but there was a game in Perth at 5:35pm local time, which meant 7:35pm east coast for broadcasting.

Ghosty, the longer our club plays AFLW games at Casey, the less interest there will be. I'm sorry, I've been a big supporter in the past, but it is a massive effort to travel that far, to stand in the wind and often the elements, to watch us play. I see it as the single reason why we don't attract support. It is not friendly for our membership base.

I hope we can get a few to Ikon this week, but don't hold much hope. The AFLW has literally fallen off the map. The standard has actually declined. Sure, our girls are good...but the league itself is really struggling.

I tend to agree with the first part - I don’t know where our demographic heartland is these days but I would guarantee it is not within cooee of Casey Fields. Having our home games there is not setting us up for success.

As for the standard declining that is simply untrue. Improvement may not have been lineal but this version of the Melbourne side would beat our 2017 team by 200 points.

The game is at IKON, it's not at Casey. So you have no excuse.

I understand what you’re saying about Casey. But I’m talking about this weekend’s match, in isolation. As I think I’ve made clear, I’m appealing to anyone and everyone regardless of how they feel about W footy to consider coming to this Sunday’s QF which is at Ikon.

Was well aware Ghosty…you were concerned with the lack of interest in the Women’s side. I was merely highlighting that it’s hard to be interested in something that is, until today, played 46km from the CBD. You can’t suddenly expect people to turn up because it’s at Ikon this week, when they have little attachment to the competition. I looked at the fixture when it was released and penciled in three games I could make with a family. The Collingwood match at Vic Park. The home Ikon game. And one Casey afternoon fixture (where you served me a snag).

As very many have said Vic Park would be a wonderful home and away venue. Great transport. Nearby food places for a bite to eat etc

Please note: you’ve quoted Katrina Dee Fan, not me. 👍🏽

BTW, I’m not concerned with the lack of interest in the W comp. People can’t be forced to like something so I’d be wasting my time.

All I was doing was appealing to folks to attend today’s match, and I’ll do the same for this Saturday’s match. Nothing more than that.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Brisbane

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
