No or very low compo is fair. He's hardly played the last few years, and his contract from North wouldn't be huge

That might be the case but Barrett didn't need to highlight it to the world. It is disrespecting Charlie.

Of all the mfc things he could write about he takes a veiled swipe at dear Charlie - implying his value is zero.

Unbelievably mean spirited of Barrett.

God, Barrett is an insufferable [censored].

(By the way, the "If..." "Then..." format has been incomprehensible for ages, but he seems to have taken it to a newly idiotic level in this case.)

Wish him well, but feels like somebody who does their best work as part of a good team rather than being a difference-maker.

IF theres one thing that Barrett constantly harps on about at this time of year

THEN its the free agency compo. His comment on Spargo isn't a one off, and isn't a dig at whether he has value or not. If he had no value, he wouldn't get a contract. Not sure what free agency compo has to do with it.

It might be nice if we just wished departing players well, instead of denigrating them on the way out.

There is an exception to every rule of course and for the Dees the exception has the longest, most read and contributed to thread in DL history and the players’ name is not even mentioned, just his initials T$.

Good luck Charlie and hope you play some nice footy for the Roos and thanks for your contribution to our last flag.

They have a wave of all-purpose high productivity midfielders and need to fill out their list with AFL-grade role players.

Spot on. I reckon they're doing a decent job of getting balance into their list. Spargo makes sense.

Perfect sentiments across the board.

All the best SparGOAT. Integral part of our premiership success.

It was apparently mentioned on 'Gettable' today that Charlie Spargo is attracting interest from other clubs.

Out of contract at the end of this season after two injury plagued years.

Do people still see him as a part of our side going forward?

Hope so

Cal says Spargos age and contract length could result in us getting an end of 2nd round pick. Not a bad outcome.

Hope Barrett reads that.

Last week he insultingly said Charlie's transfer didn't warrant any compensation pick.

Do you? You don't seem to. Disappeared when we won the flag too. You must have been off supporting us I suppose.

A late second rounder would be a great result considering Spargo's recent history with injury.

  • 3 weeks later...

Charlie Spargo's move from Melbourne to North Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent is also set to go through on Friday, with the Demons likely to receive a band three (second round) or band four (end of second round) pick for losing him.

Free agency frenzy begins, Pies unlikely to chase Dee, talks start for mid - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1435783

Barrett has been dead against any compensation for FAs.

Second would be amazing. Expecting end of second round though, which would be in the 40s with academy picks

I don't mind that he's gone to the Roos where he has a family connection.

I see a lot of other free agent compensation has been announced. Do we know what we get for Spargs and does that effect possibly having to trade for Mihocek?

I think from memory we were the only club to take a net free agency compensation pick rather than trading for the incoming player and not diluting the compo pick.

When Carlton get pick 19 for Jack Silvani (reportedly the about the same Hawthorn got for Lance Franklin) after he played 0 and 13 games for Calton in the past 2 seasons, then I think we should also expect realitive overs for Spargo.

Perhaps the AFL are finally waking up to the corrosive impact of free agency on equalisation and giving more reasonable compensation as a result. ... or maybe they are just favouring Carlton - we'll soon see I guess.

I thought he was pretty good for us when he first started with us as an 18yo and burst onto the scene with his tenacious tackling pressure and attack on the footy, at a time when we were really struggling as a team and lacking players with those attributes.

Will have some fond memories of Charlie.  Not only because he's got the same name as my oldest son, but because I genuinely think he made a good contribution to the Melbourne footy club over the years.  His last couple of seasons have been poor by his standards (mainly due to injury), but I felt he played some really good seasons for us as well, including but not limited to our premiership.  Was some of that manic Spargo pressure that resulted in one of our early grand final goals to Pickett if I recall correctly.

All the best Charlie sad to see you go, but thanks for your contribution.

SOS is a Carlton man, offer contracts that push them into higher band. If this was a trade Jack would be worth around pick 35 to 45, the ruck around that 19 pick. Spargo hasnt played either pick in 40s or 50s, hopefully Todd Viney has taken care of melbourne with his contract and we set second round pick

Agree! Also the fact you called your eldest son Charlie Spargo is impressive!!

The deal Silvagni has from the Saints would be close to double what Spargo is getting from North.
