Loved the man. I have serious doubts that we're gonna find a BETTER coach... I don't think there are many coaches that could have done a better job with the veiled basket-case our club is.

I was resigned to the fact he was going soon, but would have preferred a different exit, and I certainly didn't want him to go, not in my heart.

he was red and blue. Now there's one less person who's heart bleeds that colour. We're all worse off without him.

What is the point of this poll? Let the man go with the respect he deserves. Just watching him on the footy show talking about how it is so important that all Melbourne supporters really get behind the club now - you would not get another man capable of showing so much dignity and grace whilst going through what he is at the moment. He is so obviously hurting but still conducts himself so well.

Again - what are you trying to achieve with the poll???????

But maybe, just maybe, we don't need a better coach... just a DIFFERENT one.

Daniher is a good coach and will no doubt coach again, but he was not the best fit for Melbourne going forward.

So as long as we find a coach who is better for our club, than that's all that matters.

I said yes, because he seemed a nice guy.

I didn't like him as MFC Coach though - I can recall hoping he'd get moved on as far back as 2000

Of course.

I'm resigned to the decision. I had my moments of frustration with him, it's true. Many of them. but I'm conscious of two facts. The first is that he'll coach somewhere else, have success with money and support behind him... And we''l pay for it. the second is that we're MFC. We can't pay for a Pagan, and we can't woo a Matthews. We have to take a punt on an untried, or assistant.... We're always going to be blooding the next supercoach. In that sense, we'll never get the next big thing in coaching... or likely won't... hence saying we won't get a BETTER coach.

Dont think its that much of a bad thread.

Jeez.... so would I.

At the pub last night me and a bunch of MFC mates were consoling, and we all raised one of he more solemn toasts I've been involved in for Neale.

Far too negative.

We won't pay for Daniher having success elsewhere, because the simple fact is, he was unlikely to have success with us.

This isn't like trading a player who then goes on to be a superstar. Daniher has had 10 years, and limited success, and if he helps another club then that's great for him. I wish him all the success in the world, as he is a very good, decent person.

Secondly, who says we haven't got the money to pay for a coach? I would suggest that Daniher was well paid as a long-term coach, and besides, who is to say that by taking a punt we won't be able to blood the next supercoach ourselves?

Look at who is coaching the most successful teams at the moment...

Clarkson? Laidley? Thompson? Warsfold?

What success have they had before their current jobs? In fact, what experience did Daniher have before he arrived at Melbourne? very little, and he went on to be a successful coach according to you, who will go on to do great things at other clubs.

The bottom line is I believe we will find a better coach for the MFC. Maybe not a better tactical coach than say Eade, or a more respected man than Matthews, but I'd certainly hope to find someone who could better motivate our players to perform consistently. Daniher wasn't able to achieve that in 10 years, and IMO his biggest downfall was that he was too nice, and too decent and too forgiving.

Football is a tough caper, and generally the bigger the bastard the bigger the success.

I hope we can find someone who will be ruthless and turn the culture of our club upside down the way Neale couldn't, and I also hope the players go out tomorrow night and really throw themselves at the contest as a sign of appriciation for him. Lets not forget that apart from David Neitz, every single player who plays tomorrow night has come to this club because of Neale Daniher.

I am compelled to vote (yes obviously) only because it just a ridiculous question and thread with no relevance to anything. If I were a mod I would lock it.

What a stupid poll.

The tone of the question is clearly driving for a 'no' response.

Quick sentence analysis -

Did any of you actually like Daniher?

- establishes that the author didn't like Daniher.

Did any of you actually like Daniher?

- establishes that the author looks down on those who did.

You're poll is actually a pretty lame attempt at bullying people into the desired answer.

Says something that there is you and maybe four other people who would say that they didn't like Daniher.

I just hope that whoever our next coach is doesn't have your ego and lack of respect for others.

Right, I see.

A little excess exuberance.

I suppose with the amount of anger directed at the coach around here it's easy to think he wasn't liked.

Mumy and Daddy still love eachother, and we both love you, we just need to be apart.

I wonder if any players will be running away from home?

Lay off the Daniher bashing mate. The bloke is a legend and has done a hell of a lot for our club and promoting it. When he took over we were bottom of the ladder (near enough), had a very aging list (lyon, stynes, viney etc.), had just fought off a merger proposal and were almost bankrupt.

The board can take a little credit for where we are today, but Neale should get most of it. His promotional work along with his enthusiasm, passion and commitment to the club and players was first rate.

Stop being fickle. Always look after your own.

I'm looking forward to the appointment of a tough coach who understands how leaders are deloped, pro-active on match days and slects only on a players ability to run through a brick wall.

IMO, thi shas been a common set of deficiencies from 2000 onwards.

With Northey, they were never beaten thill the final siren

Love the Guy.

But not as coach for our future, his time was up.

Any coach who can last at the one club for 10 years has to have something good going for him. I have always been a ND supporter.

He has left the club with dignity in a way in which everyone is a winner. That is why he will walk into another job and why we will be sought after by potential coaches.

It takes 'very big men' to handle these situations as well as ND and Gardner.

All this with ordinary club facilities and lower budget support (c/f rich clubs).

We have been a pillar of stability.

As a bloke, he is the best coach in the AFL and thats what I will miss, however his time was up.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
