The recent conversation on Max's heir apparent (or lack there of) has had me thinking that I believe Daniel Turner is best placed to be our next captain.

The growth in his game has been huge in the last two years. He's been forthright in his love for the club. Commands respect from his team mates.

The expected timeline of Max having at least 2 more solid years in him fits in with Disco's development timeline.

I think he may be the next Melbourne Football Club captain. What are the the thoughts of other Demonlanders?

Awesome call @Dannyz He's been one of our most consistent players all year.

Has leadership written all over him, when Max and Maysie had their little spit at each other on KB, guess who was there to settle the pair down?

Disco Turner to the rescue.

I'm in full agreement and suggested this here a month or so ago.

There was a video interview on the club website over the summer with Turner and he aspired to be a leader for sure.

Fits the age, talent and onfield actions (the May/Max diffusion) profile.

Having said that, Lever would have been the obvious choice at the start of this year, but that landscape may have changed.

Agree with this, he's had potential captain written all over him since he arrived and does an enormous amount to mentor the young back group

He’s still very young but Xavier Lindsay is about the most impressive young leader I’ve ever met. He’s probably someone who’ll find himself a captain of the MFC within 5 years IMO

I'm miffed that we have no discernible succession plan for Max.

There was a much touted leaders development program started by Shand at the off-site camp last pre-season. Suspect it fell by the wayside along with his other recommendations.

Keep Max, but its time for Viney, Lever etc to make way for some younger guys (eg Rivers, Lindsay, Turner) in the official leadership team.

I’m glad that you bought Daniel Turner up Dannyz, I am more in the Trent Rivers school but I was struggling with who else and Disco has really stood out since locking himself in the team last year. Would love to see both in the leadership group going forward. Mind you I haven’t totally given up on Jake Lever but that depends on how his body stands up going forward.

I would run through brick walls for Disco..

Me too.

He's 35 games in and clearly my favourite player.

I'd ask Max if he could do one more season and then think Turner, if he wanrrs it, is perfect. Twenty-four years old, 50 games under his belt. Do it.

I like it. Still a bit inexperienced for my liking but he's definitely got the traits.

Much loved and very popular figure amongst the group and yes, naturally people follow him just due to his personality and good country natured style.

I reckon he has one of the best celebrations in the game to go along with his leadership.

I know I will get shut down for it, but still recon JVR will become a good CHF or CHB and will be a leader of the club.

Tried his guts out, I think a new coach and some work with a Tom Hawkins type mentor will help him a lot this offseason

Except he would have already broken it down! ;-)

Foolish Romantics.

So much more to captaincy and leadership than being a promising, young, even good, player. Needs to have a lot more going for him than a cult following on here...

I believe their initially was a succession plan before this that would have had us a new skipper this season but unfortunately those plans fell apart.

Feels like Max needs to hold out for that next group or we need to fill the gap for a few years.

Notwithstanding his performances this season when his form was inconsistent, I’d back Rivers to assume the role.

I heard him talking at a supporters’ function and he spoke confidently and eloquently, not to mention diplomatically when he was asked some leading questions.

Very impressive young man and I imagine his movie star good looks won’t harm his cause

I think we lost both players in the succession plan unexpectedly in Gus and Nibbler.

Gus would be our captain today if he hadn't retired, and Nibbler would be next in line.

Chin is someone I know is rated very highly for his leadership qualities and abilities to unite the group both old and young. Could be a dark horse for the future.

I like Disco, but I would need an analysis of his chi energy before looking at him for captaincy.

The poster who says Chandler doesn't serve our energetics due to his profound psyhosocial failings might be able to help with this.

It's too early for mine... it depends on what Max does. But if Max stays captain next season and Disco keeps us this form (I get the sense he is well liked and has natural leadership qualities) then he should definitely be in the frame.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
