Iโ€™m really not sure what people expect Ed to say? He says the players had a good relationship and loved Goody. I donโ€™t think the board disagreed with that.

But loving someone is not always enough. Players may love him but also think we need a change, or they might be blinded by their affection towards him. As the saying goes, love is blind.

Hmm. The word that he used first in that sentence wasn't "love", it was "respect".

"We always respected him and loved him as a coach, so if that's what the board thinks, then that's what the board thinks."

Also, it's "respect him as a coach", not just "respect him as a person", it's a professional/football relationship and that respect has to be earned. Also perhaps worth noting, Langdon played the first part of his career under Ross Lyon, so he at least has a reference point.

Sliding doors momentโ€ฆ

Brayshaw not nearly killed, we kick slightly straighter - Prelim and possibly another Grand Final. Instead the beginning of the endโ€ฆ

Haha nice meme. Marchbank lied about touching the ball when we scored a goal, and so we lost to Carlton by 2 or 3 points in the second or third last game of the season... as a result, we did not finish second and so we faced the Pies in the prelims and so on, so forth. This will forever be my conspiracy theory of our unravelling!

No, no no. You clearly don't get it.

It will be different this time, especially if we can land Collingwood's version of Simon Goodwin (minus the premiership success).

Not sure if this is meant as a joke.

If I had a penny for every organisation, government or company that has been run off a cliff because "it will be different this time" ...

Over the last few years, if you look at every struggling team that changed coaches, except for GCS they're all still struggling - or languishing.

Changing coaches is not the fix xmany here seem to think it is, and the "fresh voice" line trotted out by the board is so demonstrably flawed as a business strategy that I'm surprised they had the gall to use it.

The human species often confuses change for progress.

While I agree, very few clubs that have changed coaches in recent times have had a good list.

Gold Coast and Pies the exception and you can see the result.

Essendon, Carlton, Richmond, West Coast, and Sydney all have major list issues. And apart from Sydney have not experienced success in some time (Richmond aside but theyโ€™re on the other side of prolonged success now).

Iโ€™m not saying our list is perfect, but itโ€™s certainly promising enough to play finals.

Total bollocks.

But whatever.

For me, we do as well.

  • established key position forward

  • skilled ball-users/midfielder(s)

Also issues with our back line, which is about to fall off a cliff with the aging of May, Lever and McDonald.

Of course it's a joke. People are only considering Buckley as a viable option because he's a legend of the game that is still front of mind due to his work in the media.

He's articulate I guess, but outside of that there's very little reason to believe he'd be successful if appointed.

This is factually incorrect

GWS and Collingwood both played in preliminary finals a year after change in coaches. Both stayed in finals contention since.

Sam Mitchell made a semi final in his 3rd year.

Dimma Hardwick is about to take the Suns into finals in only his second year at the helm.

Chris Fagan took them to a semi final in his 3rd year in 2019 and hasnt missed a finals since.

Richmond you cannot count because they have gone full rebuild but Yze has done an outstanding job considering no one tipped them to win a game after losing significant amount of experienced players.

Removing Goodwin will be the best thing this club has done since the appointment of Jackson. We needed fresh voice and energy and I have no doubt we'll get that with the new coach.

The previous time we sacked a coach was Mark Neeld. I think we all thought that was the right decision at the time, and since then have had a premiership (admittedly 8 years after the sacking). So sometimes it works ...

Melbourne Demons rift emerges after Simon Goodwin sacking

A Melbourne Demons player has lifted the lid on a potentially ugly rift forming among the playing group and club hierarchy after the sacking of coach Simon Goodwin on Tuesday.

So youโ€™d rather heโ€™d lied? Because thatโ€™s exactly what he wouldโ€™ve been doing had he said what YOU expected him to say.

You donโ€™t like what he said. That doesnโ€™t mean what he said is wrong. He was expressing HIS feelings, not YOURS.

Er....yes, I would. Leaders of every...single .. organisation of any size are required to tell half truths or outright lies every single day. Like it or not it is a significant part of leadership - you aren't afforded the luxury of being able to speak your mind and you do need to tow the company line. Honesty is for internal discussions and definitely not for the vultures of the AFL media landscape. Very very very naive to think otherwise.

It's not the first time Ed has done this either - honesty is an admirable trait but not helpful in this situation. He's now projected a divide or disharmony inside the club to the world (whether true or not), including prospective new players and coaches and god knows who else.

It's not helpful and not necessary.

It had been less than 24 hours since learning his coach whom he and his teammates love and respect had been sacked and you wanna read a level of complacency into his comments? Poor Ed was probably still shocked and had yet to get his head around it. You say it speaks to the level of comfort of the playing group under Goodwin. I say it speaks to the sadness and shock of the playing group immediately upon learning of the loss of Goodwin.

You're still misinterpreting what was said.

Yes we know, you would've signed Goodwin up for life because the coach is actually useless and doesn't effect anything so why not? The players loved, sorry respected, him after all and that's been working so well the last few years.

Correct my point is the fact Smith will be the 4th president since 2021 & 3rd CEO. Thatโ€™s the instability

No it's not. Read the original post. A team that has consistently played in finals and maybe has one off year (Pies, GWS) is not what I would call a struggling team. Also, was only talking about the last few years.

But been here before. People can't help themselves in looking at all the times a particular coaching path has led to success, while ignoring both a) other factors that might have contributed to success but in particular, all the times that same path has not had a significant impact on a clubs trajectory. Essendon, North and St Kilda have been through numerous coaching changes without any real change in their fortunes. But that's the norm. Outliers are just that.

How Demonland sees statistics:

Surgeon: Hi, I'm your surgeon, I'll be performing your open heart surgery.

Demonlander: It's a very complicated operation, what's your success rate?

Surgeon: Excellent. I've done a dozen of these, I had one patient where I turned his life around, added 25 years to it.

Demonlander: And the others?

Surgeon: They all died on the operating table.

Demonlander: Sounds good, let's do it.

But heh, it'll be different this time.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

In the aftermath, I penned the following words: โ€œThen came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.โ€ Today, weโ€™re back in the same place although oneย difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, โ€œIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, โ€ฆโ€ย  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
