Also, it's "respect him as a coach", not just "respect him as a person", it's a professional/football relationship and that respect has to be earned. Also perhaps worth noting, Langdon played the first part of his career under Ross Lyon, so he at least has a reference point.

While I agree, very few clubs that have changed coaches in recent times have had a good list.

Gold Coast and Pies the exception and you can see the result.

Essendon, Carlton, Richmond, West Coast, and Sydney all have major list issues. And apart from Sydney have not experienced success in some time (Richmond aside but they’re on the other side of prolonged success now).

I’m not saying our list is perfect, but it’s certainly promising enough to play finals.

Of course it's a joke. People are only considering Buckley as a viable option because he's a legend of the game that is still front of mind due to his work in the media.

He's articulate I guess, but outside of that there's very little reason to believe he'd be successful if appointed.

This is factually incorrect

GWS and Collingwood both played in preliminary finals a year after change in coaches. Both stayed in finals contention since.

Sam Mitchell made a semi final in his 3rd year.

Dimma Hardwick is about to take the Suns into finals in only his second year at the helm.

Chris Fagan took them to a semi final in his 3rd year in 2019 and hasnt missed a finals since.

Richmond you cannot count because they have gone full rebuild but Yze has done an outstanding job considering no one tipped them to win a game after losing significant amount of experienced players.

Removing Goodwin will be the best thing this club has done since the appointment of Jackson. We needed fresh voice and energy and I have no doubt we'll get that with the new coach.

The previous time we sacked a coach was Mark Neeld. I think we all thought that was the right decision at the time, and since then have had a premiership (admittedly 8 years after the sacking). So sometimes it works ...

Like it or not it is a significant part of leadership - you aren't afforded the luxury of being able to speak your mind and you do need to tow the company line. Honesty is for internal discussions and definitely not for the vultures of the AFL media landscape. Very very very naive to think otherwise.

It's not the first time Ed has done this either - honesty is an admirable trait but not helpful in this situation. He's now projected a divide or disharmony inside the club to the world (whether true or not), including prospective new players and coaches and god knows who else.

Yes we know, you would've signed Goodwin up for life because the coach is actually useless and doesn't effect anything so why not? The players loved, sorry respected, him after all and that's been working so well the last few years.

No it's not. Read the original post. A team that has consistently played in finals and maybe has one off year (Pies, GWS) is not what I would call a struggling team. Also, was only talking about the last few years.

But been here before. People can't help themselves in looking at all the times a particular coaching path has led to success, while ignoring both a) other factors that might have contributed to success but in particular, all the times that same path has not had a significant impact on a clubs trajectory. Essendon, North and St Kilda have been through numerous coaching changes without any real change in their fortunes. But that's the norm. Outliers are just that.

How Demonland sees statistics:
