The dignified waywas to thank him at a press conference, with Simon in club colours, with players and family there, assuming he agreed.

And for the fans outline the coaching plan for the rest of the year.

There is no dignified way out for the club now. I bet they are scrambling on how to manage 'the optics'. Too late! The damage is done.

A press conf now will be an embarrassment. To not have one is a disgrace. A real catch-22 of the club's doing.

Talk about another 'own goal'.

After the St Kilda disaster and Simon came out with that silly thing about some good things in the last 4 minutes my mind went Simon" I think you just ended your career at the MFC".

Why now? Perhaps there were things going on with players seeing their futures elsewhere. What we thought about rumors of Lever and North might actually be true. Perhaps there were others!

The reaction of Maxy will be an interesting one to watch. Has always been a staunch supporter of his coach and they’re very close off the field.

The passage of time will tell us whether it needed to be done now, or could have waited 3 weeks.

But for those who want the club to be #ruthless, you’ve got your wish.

If this destabilises the club, well, you made your bed.

I hope this isn’t Green making a #bigcall just to justify that he isn’t an interim president. I hope this has been well thought through.

Oh no this may mean we lose the next 3 games? Like we havent lost all season.

This is where I reckon Simmo or Horse would be good. It is an ideal role for an experienced Head Coach who has had success, is strong on culture, but no longer has the desire to be the Head Coach. Then bring in a Cam Bruce or simarly experienced Senior Assistant ad the Head Coach.

LH i suggest there was a plan to do as you suggest but someone in the decision process leaked to the press. Was the new CEO and President involved?

Stark difference between the two.

Norm Smith was sacked 12 games into the 1965 season, after winning the flag the year before and with the team sitting third on the ladder - 9 wins, 3 losses.

Goodwin was “sacked” ( let’s wait for the ALL the details to come out, maybe it was by mutual arrangement, who knows at this stage) 3 seasons less 3 matches having not won a final since winning a premiership in such a dominant fashion, whole season included.

It’s been all downhill since then.

Agree.

I am not against the argument that Simon is no longer the man for the job. My opinion is he doesn't have the gameday nous and has failed to keep up with where the game is at. Just felt it could have been an end of year thing since it's less than a month away.

Norm's sacking was nuts.

How long is Yze's contract at Richmond?

I'd hate for the club to do to Simon what they did to Adam Simpson...that was...gross.

The number of people I know who were not going to renew their memberships and the number on here asking how to turn off auto renew, maybe the club saw the writing on the wall. Guess we will have to wait for the club to put out an announcement.

I wouldn't call these people supporters of the club and I hope they still dont renew. Who needs support like that. Weak.

Every decision could be disastrous. Not making a decision, however, is unforgivable. The club has been festering in more ways than one since the flag, we need and deserve change. President, CEO, senior coach and presumably head of football next. That's a fair old sign of change.

This is right.

I really dislike the timing of this right now but the one and only thing that could save it is a rock solid succession plan that needed to be acted on immediately.

On another note, seems we still have leaks in the club. The first thing PJ stamped out was the leaking to the media and it has been creeping back in over the last couple of years. The fact that scumbag Tom Morris broke this before the club had the opportunity to tell the players is a disgrace, the Board still has issues that sacking a coach won't resolve.

The reaction of ALL players. Can't see Melksham renewing for one final year now. Can't imagine Koz is not feeling a bit played... who knows - one final AA jacket and maybe Max will call it quits and get out early.

A cursory glance at the stats would show you that we concede significantly more than we ever did under Chaplin.

Easy to not concede when you go slow and long down the line constantly.

Our ball movement out of the backline this year has been so far improved of the last couple. Our best since 2021 I think.

It’s the bad turnovers from our mids and half forwards that we haven’t fixed.

That remains to be seen.

How strong a position will it be if they haven't sorted a strong replacement, or at the least have some serious irons in the fire - not to mention a clear timetable to sort a new coach in a timely fashion.

I mean, how do we go about trading players in and preparing for 2026 if we are still faffing about in November trying to land a coach.

That’s why the Board has decided to move now st…d!!

Gutted.

The club would know who keeps feeding TM. It should have ousted them eons ago.

The club should have been ready with a contingency plan in case it was leaked. ie Call a press conf for 9.00 am, which would immediately trigger speculation. But at least the club could control the narrative.

Whoever is leaking information out of the club to the media needs to be thrown in the bin.

And once again this club proves to be the worst communication managers in the AFL.

We can't control a narrative to save our lives.

Wrong decision.

Not happy about this at all. Deserved more respect than this.

But this is a classic MFC move to do a knee [censored] reaction and condemn us for years in the wilderness by no doubt selecting an unproven coach with a nice PowerPoint presentation. After 5 years of misery the president will quit, an ex player will ride in on a big white horse, the board will barely say anything and we will roam the wilderness again. We have all seen this before. This might be it for me, I think I'm done.

At least I saw a flag in my lifetime, I never thought I would see that, and Goodwin delivered it. Thank you Simon, I will never forget how happy I felt on that day and when I had pride in this club again. If I have to wait the same amount of time for a flag again I will no longer be alive. Thank you, you are a legend of our club and always will be

The club should do whatever Goodwin wanted. He has earnt the right to go out his way.

Now for the replacement...anyone hear any trotting sounds? Keep your ears to the ground...we'll go riding on the horses yeah yeah

No need to …..apparently Tom Morris has this covered. As an aside I’m more ‘urinated off’ with the insider that is leaking information to him.

Want to fix the cultural issues at Melbourne? Find out who is the mole and sack the filthy disgusting toe rag.

Which one of the 23 defeats in our last 35 games has been your favourite? I'm flabbergasted at your assertion that the senior coach was somehow the glue holding together this playing group, given what an embarrassment we have been the past two years.

You are kidding right? The players are not naive to think that Goodwin's job was safe. No finals wins since 2021, with a list that most said would be a dynasty.

Do you really think that Melksham will give up a $400-$500 salary out of loyalty to Goodwin?

Hopefully this is just the beginning. Tim Lamb has to be next. Our list management has been pathetic.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
