I’m strongly against this for all the reasons already suggested in this thread.

Jeremy [censored] Cameron wouldn’t kick goals in our forward line. Joe Daniher, after a year out of the system, isn’t going to solve our problems.

We will go nowhere until the FD start looking in the middle.

I’d argue Jeremy Cameron can create goals on his own, through running power or marking, so he would.

Daniher, not so much.

As with others, this would be further evidence that the club is a little skewed in where the list is at.

We are not stealing a premiership with Joe, we are too far off the best teams

Edited by BW511

There is absolutely no doubt that Daniher would make us a better side overnight. So maybe we finish 10th instead of 15th next year. Big deal.

Ultimately it would be a move that brings us no closer to the next premiership and does nothing other than give Goodwin and Lamb a tiny amount of breathing room as they fight to save their jobs.

I think we need a mature key forward to help usher in the new fellas. So whilst possibly short sighted there are benefits regardless of who the old timer is.

Totally agree.

If there's any truth to this, it [censored] infuriates me.

This is doubling down on the delusion that we're so close. This is Dan Houston times infinity.

It annoys me even more because Goodwin literally went on TV a week ago and said we were rebuilding on the run by adding youth to the side. Now we find out we're chasing a bloke who's been out of the game for a year and will be 32 before the next season starts.

Not to mention we'd have to overpay him substantially to get him to pick us over just going back to Brisbane.

How's does a Coach and FD say... we're desperate and haven't a [censored] clue as to how to fix things .... without saying it

This really is the epitome of Give a man a fish !!

It's NOT the player(s) per se ... its the methodologies employed using them.

The first step to fixing any problem...admit and understand the problem.

Simon and Co are showing us they're incapable of doing this.

We've had some great performances this year against genuine contenders and probably should have beaten GWS and Collingwood. Even Hawthorn was up for grabs. But that is really a bare minimum for this squad. If Goodwin and co really think Daniher is the critical missing piece then they are delusional.

But you're making the assumption that this is our only move.

Again, I'm not for or against Daniher, just trying to understand the decision making given we don't have all the facts.

Hawks are a medium sized club who have no trouble luring players.

Hawks are a clear-cut big club. 6th on the membership table and a lengthy history now of success on and off the field.

They are successful but comparative to the actual big clubs they don't quite stack up from a membership point of view. As far as Victoria goes the big clubs are Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Essendon.

Hawthorn and Geelong are a rung below.

Us, Saints, Dogs and North are all small.

Essendon and Hawtorn are neck and neck for memberships.

Geelong has more memberships than both but all 3 are in the same ballpark.

I can't see Joe moving down from Byron Bay, considering he commuted from there to Brisbane everyday in his Lions days.

Why on earth would he retire from a premiership side, in contract, to then move back into the public spotlight at the MFC train wreck?

The 0.2% chance that we would get him over the line is if he wanted to do Neale proud by playing for the club that means the world to his uncle. That's it.

I do wish that we were able to convince Tom Hawkins to come to us for a couple of years, in order to assist JVR and Jeffo in their development.

Sorry I meant supporterbase moreso than memberships. Essendon have been garbage for 20 years. If they ever get good again their memberships will skyrocket. The supporter base is there and bigger than what Hawks and Geelong can reach.

People thought Richmond and Carlton's supporterbase was diminishing. Then Richmond win a flag and they have the biggest membership in the comp. Carlton start making finals for the first time in ages and they crack 100k immediately. The big four are called that for a reason. When their form isn't good they just become sleeping giants.

If Hawthorn were as big a club as the actual big clubs they wouldn't have to sell their games to Tassie.

At first I rolled my eyes - I was never a huge fan of Joe, way too goofy for my liking.

I love Joe’s goofiness! And he has great taste in music (don’t let the Frozen song fool you). But his head is too small for his body; I find it very distracting. I coped with this for one or two matches a year when we played them, not sure I could cope with it for every match of the season 😂😂😂

Yes. And so we should be.

He also mentioned during the Carlton press conference that he's inculcating habits and behaviours that make sure we stop having enormous in-game periods of uncompetitiveness and losing to flailing semi-VFL sides. This is exactly the line he was pushing in 2016 - and Roos before him.

You can't be returning to the absolute fundamentals AND bringing in a 32 year old who really only played exceptional football when his side were absolutely humming.

I noticed on another thread someone mentioned a rumour that Goodwin was not just safe but possibly looking at an extension. This astounded me, but I far prefer that than Goodwin feeling like he has 12 or 15 games left to prove himself and so countenancing the most outandlishly unlikely throw at the stumps.

Goodwin getting extended would be insane to me. I'd be astounded if the club was that stupid after missing finals for two years while he still has a year left to run.

But but don't we have the best midfield in the league

Or maybe just a veryvery highly paid one on painfully long contracts that gives us zero room to change

This is incompetence at every level in my view all the talk about forwards is cover for a midfield that cannot deliver

Completely insane.

But this seems like back-against-the-wall desperation to me. There's no way a half-competent football department would consider this if they didn't think they were all on the chopping block.

I said Dan Houston earlier. It might be more like Byron Pickett.

If true We are clutching at straws and reinforces how [censored] we are that we need to chase retired players and a player who is mentally switched off, our inability to attract current players is what should be questioned, Goodwin is saying we will improve via the draft & now chasing a retired has been , what a joke

Goodwin is still trying to find a replacement for Brown. We simply haven't recovered from losing Jackson and then Brown. There is no plan B.

Its been said before but you hit the nail on the head again we had a formula in 21 and it was simply devastating.

This Formula broke down during 22 when Tmac got injured, Brown's knee was cooked and Jacko's head was all over the place from the money that was thrown at him.

23 we tried to replicate that formula with a few tweaks Petty to the Forward line, Melk in the F50 and Grundy as sharing the ruck and forward load with Max.

The Max and Brodie experiment didn't work but we were still in the mix but bad luck struck late in the season with injuries to Petty, Melk, Fritta and the infamous Brayshaw incident.

We just need to develop our own or trade for a reserve key position player Patrick Voss style.

Maybe Wade Derksen can be our Patrick Voss?

Daniher ain't coming back to Melbourne to play.

If he does decided to play it will be with Sydney as its a closer commute from his NSW farm.

No one wants to come to us even when we were any good as we don't have the cap space to offer big coin and our sh yte facilities.

Get real peoples!

But if he didn't cost much (picks wise), despite being a year retired and one of the more unreliable players even at his best he would still be better than what we have now.

I’ve just been wracking my brain for a few seconds, but to no avail; how can picks be involved in the recruiting of a player who is not currently affiliated with any club? Where do said picks go? How does this whole scenario work? Please excuse my ignorance.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
