That was a pretty serious hit

There are ways to be aggressive

AJ got that one very wrong

Bagging a guy who’s played a handful of games and who could easily have kicked 3 goals yesterday seems a little odd. 2 weeks is about right. He’s shown more this year than Jefferson or JVR and that’s why he’s in the team. Is a long term prospect? Unlikely but he’s not our worst.

The right suspension. Worse than Mills’ hit last week. Absolutely deserves two weeks. Lucky he didn’t seriously hurt NWM.

Quite frankly, it was idiotic and he has to learn to be better than this.

As expected. He didn’t need to do that at all. You leave the ground and turn your body and collect a player high, and you’re in trouble.

Stupid from a guy fighting for his AFL life.

JVR to replace him

Why

How is it worse? His size shouldn't matter. Mills arguably launched even higher than what AJ did. As i said above, deserves his fair whack. Now if by fair it is 2, im ok with that. So why does Mills get 1 and everybody is ok with it?

I'd like to understand how this was different to the Mills bump on Spargo.

It was worse than AJ's.

Spargo is missing weeks with injury, Wanganeen-Milera came back on the ground WTF MRO.

1 week would have been sufficient.

But let's make Melbourne the example.

I agree that it’s the right outcome, but I think it’s harsh to call it idiotic. It was a split second decision by an inexperienced player, who is trying to impose himself physically. It’s a fine line to tread when that’s the brand you want to play and it was clumsy.

Kossie copped more in that game than NWM copped in the one incident.

Never gets picked up

OK for St Kilda to play the man but never us. Maybe Johnson thought that Kossie deserved a bit of a hand for a change.

The two-match ban is about right imo.

What I have a problem with is all the talk on here about how we need someone crashing packs, no fear, grunt etc. We get AJ who fits the bill, he’s suspended, so now he’s dumb??? It’s a fine line he treads, let’s have his back.

Yes, jumping off the ground and bumping a bloke in the head is dumb.

Imagine this place if Maynard did this next week to one of our players.

It was not worst than the Mills hit. It was the exact same thing. Same action, of leaving the ground and turning your body to hit an opponent.

Both actions were poor and unnecessary, and just as everyone here condemned Mills for his actions (myself included!), we should be doing the same for AJ. Mills made a split second poor decision and so did AJ. I don’t think either players were like “I’m gonna try and concuss this guy”, but both went too hard and too high.

They both deserve 2 weeks, and are lucky their opponents weren’t concussed or they’d face 3+ weeks on the sidelines.

I love the aggression and fearlessness that AJ brings to the contest, but this particular action is exactly what we want to stamp out of the game. He was always getting suspended for that, and if a Saints player did the same thing to one of our players, we would expect they got punished.

We can’t sugarcoat a poor action because a Melbourne player did it.

A fair cop but a week early.

Maynard has already done it and ended the flourishing career of Angus Brayshaw.

The AFL tribunal decided, presumably because he plays for Collingwood, that his actions were just fine.

Don't think what I said had anything to do with the tribunal.

Weak AFL leadership let him play in the rest of the finals series.

It is indeed an interesting problem.

I and others have been wanting some force and vigour shown but I think more than any other club we have an acute awareness of how that vigour must be applied. Therefore I think the club should publicly defend the penalty and institute some training protocols for all our players. We could ask the AFL to assist us in this endeavour by examining the many contradictory approaches of other players over the last few years, not just our club but all clubs.

We can also ask the tribunal for some assistance in this vexed issue and seek some clarity on the decisions of (the whatever title he has) Christian to explain the definition of football act and how that is applied.

Beginning players like JVR and AJ seem to be more harshly reviewed and sanctioned than other more experienced players, so perhaps the tribunal sees this as part of its development role. It could be reminded that older more experienced players in fact set the example of football acts and perhaps they need to be included in that training and development issue.

A file of Maynard and Collingwood vigour over the last few years would be an admirable place to start. I am sure there are some technological experts on DLand who could provide a folder of evidence.

Spargo is missing weeks with another unrelated injury

I agree, but also why waste the money on a challenge? AJ isn’t exactly setting the world on fire. What he did was stupid, and could have easily concussed someone. Given what Viney is facing and what we went thru with Gus, I have no issues letting him cop a 2 week ban.

The very big issue I have with him copping a 2 week ban is that forever and a day, the AFL have used the outcome determine the consequence. So often in the past, no concussion would equal no suspension. Typical AFL using the MFC as a scape goat. Watch a Collingwood player do an identical action to one of our players next week and get off scott free.

Many other players have been afforded this grace by the AFL tribunal of getting no suspension because no injury resulting. AJ has become like another Kossie goes to the tribunal / MRO, it will be an automatic suspension every time, because players in Collingwood jumpers are allowed to play with aggression, but ours are not.

He should cop his fair whack. But we should challenge on the basis of Miles last week and the fact that Pearce knocks a bloke out and get it revoked. The AFL have absolutely NFI.

There you have it.

Mills left the ground and took a small guy out front on and a week as no concussion.

AJ came from the side and jumped up and bumped a 188cm player high and also no concussion.

How can AJ get more than Mills?

They tell us it is outcome based, except for no name players from lower profile clubs.

So if he knocked out NWM he only gets one more week, seriously?

11 hours ago, whatwhat say what said:

punish the action not the outcome - it was a definite 2 week job

Then so is everyone else who does the same, but that isn’t what has been happening.

Only one more week for concussing him, under the guidelines, really?

Perhaps the fact he has been suspended already this season was a factor.

No, MRO graded it high impact even though no concussion. Mills force front on to a small guy was harder and more dangerous. I am happy with suspension as long as they are consistent which they rarely are.

It was exactly the same offence.

Hard not to be cynical or think there is bias a foot.

Get it over it . Remember it was entirely a footy action. Like picking an opponent up , body slamming them and river dancing on their face. And maybe the pies hopefully going on to win a flag may have been a small factor. They lost any thread of credibility on that day and should never be allowed to forget such a great injustice that didn't cause a player to miss a couple of games. He now watches his mates from the sidelines. Forever.

I hope he takes a civil suit against as many as possible. As in a legal action.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
