Wow what a horrible display in front of goal. 7.21

For those that can get to training:

Do they actually practice goal kicking and real goal kicking simulation?

As it sure does not look like it. They cant use the excuse of the wind in the 2nd and 4th as kicking at the end was supported by the wind as the saints showed us.

From a data view point, it must be a massive flashing red indicator that they have not been able to fix. It should be a key KPI for the coaching group.

I think they should start deducting match payments for miss easy goals, its save a fortune in our salary cap to pay for a fwd that can kick straight....

JVR - is a great kick for goal.

The rest of the game was vernally very positive, we controlled the ball for much of the game after qtr time, but see point one.

Time for another one of Andy’s sprays after that performance.

Thoughts for the pod

should we continue the Alice Springs experiment? Has halted momentum again.

Binman- we looked really lethargic, do you think a big week on the track to prepare for Collingwood next week?

I also think we were out coached- all week Goody was saying Ross would bring a dour defensive game style but he then double bluffed and was playing the run and gun style. By the time we figured it out we were 5 goals down. We should have run that lead down but couldn’t convert

How do we get rid of this inaccuracy? 1.12 for the second half of footy is embarrassing for under 10s let alone an AFL side.

I now know what it feels like when other teams just keep kicking it to May or Gawn. We just kept kicking it straight to Wilkie.

Really frustrated by this game, just did ladder predictor for the second half of the season and have us finishing 10th.

Going to cut the questions off here.

We might have to do a very limited question and answer segment this week as we have Jeff White for 30 to 45 minutes at the top of the show.

Can you ask him why we can't kick straight?

This game felt like a horrible replay of the very worst games from 22-23 including those two finals losses in 23. Teams clogging our forward line while we banged it in again and again kicking points from low percentage chances and getting cut up on the rebound while our opponent gets easy goals 10m-20m out in an open forward line. Will this team ever learn? I thought we were developing a new gameplan but we still seem to come unstuck against teams that want to "park the bus"" and kill us on transition.

The pressure rating shows the team was just not up for it again, expecting to turn up and let it happen. It has been an MFC constant that whenever we string a couple of good wins together the players start drinking their own bathwater and expecting the result based on form instead of hard work. Different players, same culture.

Disagree, we again and again had good chances in front of goals. It started with trac and Kozzie missing gimmes in close early to many set shots close to goal. its not like our only looks were quick snaps from the boundary. This was a simple issue of horrendous kicking at goal. this 'we bombed it long in hope as the real reason is not true.

It certainly set the tone for Kozzie. Lazy effort, then dropped his head for the rest of the game.

he did not drop his head but he was worked over very well. he engaged his opponent too much to their advantage, blocking his run into the forward line. this game isnt easy when you get serious attention.

I'd also assume there was enormous self-imposed pressure on Koz to perform well, in this dad's Indigenous guernsey, in community. It was clearly not the day he wanted to have.

@Rohstarrr agree. Loved Andy passion and likely we all need to hear him unleash another rant. It reflects all of us. Any passionate Dees supporter would excuse any F bombs born out of the anger and disappointment of this goalkicking performance @Demonland

To answer a query above: On the few occasions I have attended training there has NEVER been a concerted systematic goal kicking session. Not varied angles or distances or even more than a handful of shots.

Is it done secretly at Casey Fields? Old style full forwards supposedly had 100 shots at or separate to training.

If Max won’t bother to fix his goal kicking issues what hope have we?

It even feels like Kozzy plays some of his worst games up there. Pressure to perform in front of his indigenous crowd, maybe.

I reported on Friday that Kosi looked "sore" and had his ankle re-strapped at training. So what does a match committee do? Play him sore because of his talent? Play a fully fit "lesser" player. Kosi kicked 6 in 2022 when we beat Port in Alice - pretty much won the game single-handedly.

Even taking away the goal kicking we resorted to bombing down the line during general play far more than previous weeks. Plenty of long bombs into the forward line as well though.

That was a fantastic and insightful interview with Jeff White tonight!

Thanks Andy, George, Binman and Jeff White, that was some Podcast, greatly appreciated how good to have one of our greats on. How sharp is Jeff and what a memory he has, that was so informative and entertaining. Also enjoyed the second half with your insights into Sunday’s very poor result after seeing us running on top of the ground the previous two weeks and then dishing up such a tired looking effort on Sunday felt quite crushing, so appreciated your thoughts on the causes but I think we are all flummoxed on our pathetic kicking.

Great Interview Jeff White. He is a legend. Any off interview talk about the likelihood of Kalani coming to Melbourne?

Thumbs up is good enough for me! Haha

Huge thanks guys, for another insightful and balanced analysis, this time following our team’s frustrating loss in the Alice …………..

…....…. and then there was your outstanding discussion with Jeff White. Jeff is so ‘switched on’ and well spoken, and your extremely thoughtful lines of questioning really hit the mark! Great work by all!

Essential listening as always!!

Best podcast I have heard (other than post GF 2021 of course)

Does Jeff have any short / medium / long term aspirations of any type of coaching role? Head, specialist, assistant?

His intellect would be invaluable at our club

That was an outstanding interview with Jeff White guys, well done. He of course brought a great amount of knowledge to the table but the questions from the interviewers were insightful too and allowed the discussion to flow. Far better than anything I've seen/heard in traditional footy media for some time 👏👏👏

Loved the Jeff White interview. Thanks gents.

Helped me to move past the weekends result!

Pay Jeff white $100K or more for next 3 months at Demons, improve kicking, goal kicking, structure etc and odds of Kalani playing at Demons!

We are missing some basis stuff - kicking in particular

@Demonland 👏👏👏 Jeff White interview. I’d highly recommend all DLers to listen in. It’s one of best PODs. Jeff is insightful not just on ruck craft but the overall game and how it’s played. I especially liked his comments about “see the game first, then refer in the stats”. Many commentators see for example the possession stats and say oh he had a great game. They need to see impact and the context of the match.

Jeff is still a red and blue man. He had a great career for the Dees.

Also really hope Kalani picks the Dees.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
