I'm told by a usually reliable (if sometimes bias) friend that Bell is having a blinder of a season.

Unfortunately I have been away all season, unable to catch a glimpse of him. I have never rated Bell, my friend and I have always disagreed on the matter.

He now claims that Bell is leading the B&F!!

Give me your thoughts on his form thus far, is he really playing that well? It would be a remarkable transformation if it were true.

He would be right up there, held Didak to a goal and a few possessions last game, the week before he slaughtered Welsh from the crows with 11 spoils, 2 goal saving tackles (welsh was running in the goal square pretty much).

he is having a massive year so far.

after the Crows game, I believe that he was the player's player of the day - all the players spoke about Belly and his spoiling and tackling...

the coach has also been forced to talk about him!!

this year Belly's confidence has grown but this has been a direct result of faith from the coach, greater ground time and also being free from injury which has thus far restricted his output.

down the track, he may well become a half back flanker with his strength, his run and also his use of the ball....

get a copy of the adelaide game. one of the best games by an individual defender i have seen.

I was at the Adelaide game and there were two Dees supporters sitting in front of me with their kids. One was obviously a Bell fan, and was talking up his game whenever he did something nice (which was often).

The second guy had to begrudgingly accept that Bell was playing well - obviously hadn't rated him previously and I inferred that this was a running debate.

I think the first guy has it in the bag ;)

HBF would be a good possie for Bell but i do like the look of him as a stopper on an dangerous opposing forward. He has a strong body, good pace to go with a leading type and decent overhead. This year he has stuck close to his opponent too, whereas last year he would often get lost.

His kicking penetration also means if his opponents start to cheat off him they can get hurt badly on the rebound should their gamble not pay off. This will become even more damaging as his accuracy and decision making improves. He has has a few oppurtunites to nail goals on the run this year and has missed them.

Definitely, he doesnt panic on the last line which is a huge plus for a young defender. This has been a criticism of Wheatley in the past and is a strong example of why Bell can play as a defensive stopper where as Wheatley can't despite them having similar bodies/attrubutes

Your "friend" may not always be right, but he is spot on with his assessment of Bell ;)

He might not be leading the B&F, because defenders seldom win awards, but in terms of improvement and consistency, Belly wins hands down.

He had 1 average game this year, playing against West Coast which slaughtered us. He gave away 10cm that day to his opponent, and still did not have a bag of goals kicked on him.

In summation, Bell has finally become the player some of us always knew he could be.

Mum's got it taped on the Foxtel IQ at her house, B2L. Along with the Pies game, and I'll get her to tape the Toigs one tomorrow night. Should make for good viewing.

And for all ye nay sayers.... I'd have put Bruce at number 1 but for his kicking. But who else has claims? Except maybe Brock being the only player to actually win games himself.
