McVee and Fritta did run throughs at 3Q with Tom Couch watching on. Sat out last quarter.

Headed out to Casey for the first time today (much closer to our Easter location than the G) - pretty impressed with the oval quality and overall facilities around Casey Fieds. Ovals everywhere.

On the field a really ordinary day, was expecting so much more.

If we need a key forward Thursday vs Tigers I’d pick in order:

1. Fritta

2. Jeffo

3. AJ

4. Roo

Fritta did a few nice things and showed some desperation- too good for VFL. Roo is along way off, really sad to see how poor his form is. Hopefully the lead and goal late gives some confidence.

Was pleasantly surprised with Kentfied down back; he very hard in a contest, looks likely intercept marking, kicks it ok.

Mid wise maybe Culley. Baldi pretty good.

Love Bonner on our list.

I went today and several things stood out

Fritsch disinterested.

Van Rooyen totally lost jumps are wayyyy of it and devoid of confidence

Jefferson, how to ruin confidence coming back from injury playing lose man in defense at times but not a good day for him.

Only about 25 entries into forward line and shocking delivery and very windy

Sorry to say but I have grave doubts about Laurie, Woewodin and to a lesser extent Brown making it

Billings is also very ineffectual. Gets the ball but!!!?

Culley might be ok, but Henderson, Johnson are just VFL Standard players. Kentfield did Ok, and Mentha and Roy George created some excitment

Main thing I learned from this game is that GWS are flush with talent that we should try and pick off.

Aleer, Derkson, Gruzewski, Leake, Angove, Wardius, Angwin, Oliver, Ough, Gothard.

These players will struggle to get into the senior team and a couple could be more than useful for us.

Gruzewski was easily the best tall forward on the ground. Derkson comfortably beat Van Roo.

Aleer would be very useful.

I reckon a lot of people were realistically more excited about the twos vs the ones until the result.

Though, i more watch the game from a development perspective on our young guys.

I liked Sestans game as well as Culley. Thought Varrell was actually good in the ruck. Sestan is very close to an AFL debut.

Luker Kentfield after long layoff was solid, read the flight of the ball and can catch it.

Will Verrall battled manfully against the UWS-GWS ruckman a.k.a 'The Hulk' not disgraced.

Noah Yze very stiff at selection. In ripper form apparently last week in the amateurs. (A known pathway to success in yonder days.)

Guess somebody had to give way for Fritsch and JVR. Who showed some brief flashes of brilliance. Jacob's last quarter re-united him with the footy.

There is no niggle or any physical issues with Rooh. It's just form and confidence unfortunately

Pretty much zero impact im afraid

Culley showed something in patches. Like the way he goes about it. I'm guessing he's probably a fair way away from building a tank / match fitness that will see him capable of handling AFL level.

He'll get a call up at some point and will be exciting to watch when he debuts. He's a big boy and his height makes him a super versatile player who will be a difficult match up. Can easily be thrown up forward to shake things up and worry the oppo too, which was trialled today for a stint.

Sestan pretty good aside from a few costly turnovers in the last Q.

On that game McVee looked super rusty. Got his hands on it a bit in the second half but much of it was chip kicking and switching around back. Having said that he could play next week regardless.

Bonner & Kent both pretty good. Don't mind Hardie. Doesn't rack them up but pretty good quality.

Baldi, Cross & Smith all worked their bums off against the tide with a few ordinary moments mixed in at times, which can happen, even to the best.

The absence of Campbell hurt imho. And Casey still hasn't found an answer to the loss of moose Munro who was the glue and engine room at CBs and stoppages for so many seasons. A few are trying hard but it's a big hole to fill.

A disappointing effort by Casey.

I thought they looked "strong" on paper, but obviously not as strong as GWS.

We definitely need to raid the Giants with so much talent being wasted at VFL level with them.

Wade Derksen for GWS in particular may still be keen to join the Demons after missing out on a trade to us at the end of last season.

Hoping Jai Culley and Luker Kentfield continue to find match fitness and start impacting games more.

Would love to see Jai Culley earn a 2nd chance at AFL level. But he needs to earn it first. He needs to be averaging 25+ possessions and 1 or 2 goals a game to get an opportunity.

SETBACK by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination.

Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay.

The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

They maintained their dominance for most of the game although the Demons made minor inroads when their time came with the breeze in the second term.

After the main break, the more efficient Giants lifted a gear and booted eight goals in the third quarter to have the game well and truly iced before the final half hour.

It would be fair to say that the final deficit would have been far greater but for the efforts of Riley Bonner who amassed 36 disposals, 10 marks and kicked a goal. He was assisted by two other fine additions to the list this year in Mitch Hardie (25 touches) and Riley Baldi (23 disposals), both of who were consistent throughout and never dropped their heads when the opposition got on top.

Of the Melbourne listed players, Judd McVee’s return from a hamstring injury incurred in the preseason was pleasing. He kicked off the cobwebs with a strong started, attacked the ball hard and showed that he’s ready to return to the fray in time for the Anzac Eve clash after collecting 19 disposals up to three quarter time when he was rested.

Oliver Sestan also had a good game with 23 disposals and he also scored a nice goal coming out of defence while Jed Adams showed some nice touch in a back line that was under heavy pressure for most of the game.

Will Verrall had an interesting tussle in the ruck playing a lone hand in the absence of the injured Tom Campbell. He lowered his colours against a bigger opponent but was by no means disgraced finishing with 16 possessions and 25 hitouts.

Jack Billings was solid with 26 touches but his kicking lacked penetration and Bailey Laurie was also busy with 19 touches, 11 tackles and two goals. Jai Culley also had the ball 19 times and was handy.

If the selectors were looking for forwards to add to the mix for next week, they would be disappointed. Axed pair Bayley Fritsch and Jacob van Rooyen were quiet with Fritsch kicking one major from 11 disposals and van Rooyen also scoring one goal from his nine touches. The former was also taken off at the final break suggesting he might also be under consideration for a return given the short turnaround to Anzac Day Eve.

Matthew Jefferson also failed to impress while 2024 midseason draftee Luker Kentfield made a successful return playing mainly in defence after a long layoff due to illness.

The Demons return to Casey Fields next Thursday morning at 11:05am and will be out to get their season back on track after yesterday’s setback. It’s a work day, so don’t expect too many in the crowd.

McVee. Ready to play next game.

Sestan. Very close to a game. Very close. Like his increased fitness and wins contested footy.

Laurie. VFL is his level. Smart around goals and ok at contests but unfortunately step up to AFL requires more pace and intensity.

Fritsch. Stays at Casey

JVR. Stays at Casey

Jefferson. Stays at Casey

Kentfield. One to watch this year. Want to see him play forward across the next few weeks

Adams. Developing still. Had good defensive moments and steady disposal. Casey for a while longer

Billings. Slow and wide and uncontested. No. Never again.

Culley I see the potential but the laconic style (lazy) type disposal at times is not AFL standard. Two misses in the second qtr deflated our momentum. Is he intense enough for AFL or just a young bloke playing some footy. Love to shake him up !!

Verrall. Another year in the gym. Outmuscled in the ruck but better around the ground. A 50:50 to return at year end.

Brown. Mentha. Johnson. Woey. Quiet games. Worry about Woey jnr. Needs to have a chat about his running. He can run. So run. Run. Run.

*Bonner. Wow !! Lovely goal from 60 out. Why was delisted by the Saints? Perhaps Dees should have looked at him for the SSP. His skills and decision making are worthy of still being in the AFL. But I guess yeah he’s now at 28, it’s probably seen as past him.

*Kirkwood-scott. Skills and connection were good. Keep persisting.

* Baldi and Hardie fought hard

Casey didn’t take their chances & made poor decisions. GWS were clean and smart and efficient. Better coached perhaps imv. Not more talented. Just better.
