This season is starting to have Mark Neeld vibes. The premiership is a distant memory.

Goodwin presser:

Goodwin still believes Melbourne can recover from a winless start to 2025, but acknowledged the Demons have to fix their fundamentals after being soundly beaten in the contest (-18), clearance (-16) and in territory, losing the inside 50 count by 25.

"We are three weeks in and we acknowledge where we sit right now isn't where we want to be. It's not the level. We need to fix it," Goodwin said.

"We've got to get to work. We acknowledge that we've got too many players at the moment that aren't in the form they need to be in.

"As coaches we need to fix that. We need to help them. We need to get them in form. That's the first step to fixing your fundamentals. You could see the basics of the game weren't to the standard required.

"We got punished by a team playing really strong footy. They look like they are full of confidence and are playing the right way. That's where we want to be. I certainly feel we have the potential to be there."

Blah blah blah

I listened to the presser so you don’t have to.

Blah blah blah method, blah blah blah not at the level, blah blah.

Only useful things that were said were Pickett, Windsor and Lever back next week. Plus Spargo if he gets through the protocols.

Re: Lindsay injury, not sure, hadn’t really heard. Which I think is slightly positive as they often know straight away with the ACLs 🤞🏼

I'm glad he didn't use the four letter word starting with L !

The players sure didn't show much love toward him or his grand plan. Nor to each other.

I was proud of the team in week 1, gave them a mulligan last week; today they were abysmal 😭.

Goody just a thought.....maybe we are a team that make other teams look like they are playing strong footy

Go and watch the 1 and a tiny bit games Jefferson had played at AFL level.

He's a spud.

YOU are the spud ! Calling it mighty early Pal!

It was impressive to watch the Suns move the ball. There always seemed to be a receiver running into position as the team mate with the ball needed to offload. It was a sort of cascading support plan that kept the ball moving in the right direction. Each player knew what support his ball carrier needed. It looked co-ordinated. Something to learn from.

So it's all the players fault?

Watching Max’s postgame interview and he is a shell of the leader he once was. He looked dejected, made little eye contact and, to me, looked worried.

Mind you, doing an interview after you’ve been spanked for the second week in a row and openly admitting he’s out of form with a number of other teammates, wouldn’t be wonderful.

I think he knows what might be on the line if there's another big loss.

If they truly do love their coach which they seem to , they're playing him straight towards a cliff.

It's pretty horrible for all involved I'd imagine.

I just can't see us turning things around anytime soon.

Feels like a dream - we dominated a season, won a flag but no-one could see it. Now we're back to sucking again after choking in 4 MCG finals in a row.

Amazing how easy the game looks when you put the ball to your teammates advantage.

well at least the disappointment of this loss is overshadowed by the shock of seeing a barefoot child in the mcg toilets.

He was fine. I spoke to him. Threw both of them at our players.

I truly believe the implementation of a modified game plan is the blind following the blind.

Look at the coaching panel. 2 Defenders and 2 bull type midfielders. No ball movement coaches, no tactical experience, limited or no experience in different clubs.

I'm not saying a coach needs experience in the area he is coaching.

But surely as a collective they should have some experience in the intended game plan. Someone needs to take the conceptual game plan and break it down position by position, player by player until each understands their own role and that of teammates. I'm not seeing that.

We are playing like brown's cows and I put it down to poor implementation and communication of the game plan.

imv we didn't recruit the coaches we needed.

The whole players and coach narrative is just boring. The performance was embarrassing. Goody doesnt instruct to play without effort, hunt and composure. That is solely on the players.

Goody is also to blame - i can't tell whether his gameplan is the problem though because the performance has been so bad i dont think you can actually tell anything about it. IF he has the lost the players, for whatever reason, if its his fault or not, he has to go. It is that simple.

There is a lot wrong, we probably don't even know the half of it.

Is the gameplan

For a poorly skilled side play kick mark while opposition set up. Eventually try to move it forward, fumble, turn it over and get slingshot for a goal.

Then get smashed at Centre bounce for either a goal, or repeat of above.

If we do get it forward, bomb it to a 1 on 3, slingshot goal.

If we do get a mark, kick a behind, then don't defend the kick in and witches hats while they move the ball for a goal

Why are we playing like this? Presumably because we know the list doesn't have the speed or fitness to play fast footy, like all the good/improving sides. Unfortunately we don't have any skill to play slow footy either. It looks like a very long season ahead.

Another positive is that it is the Derby this week.

So one of the W.A. teams will still be bottom, at least this week. Probably.

We're getting baked in clearances. The numbers are at 5 year lows. I am not disputing the acquisition of Nathan Jones but I felt we needed a midfield coach with experience and someone who could help in a lot of midfield areas.

Why was there fleeting talk about Jimmy Bartel over the off season which suddenly went away? We needed new ideas I think.

We have won clearance twice in the past 11 games.

GOODY and his Yadda Yadda spin! Giving me the absolute and Uddrs!

At the ground today with my son and you could just tell the vibe is gone from this team. No edge or willingness to crack in they played polite bruise free football and Goody said it in his interview on 360, there is a lot of love, but no desire to win! No pressure and no purpose I think the players know they are bottom 6 contenders. Skill errors were a joke, midfield slow and casual, the forward line is the worst in the AFL and it’s been a slow train wreck since the premiership. Goody didn’t want to fix it then and even denied it in our press conference today but also said he moved Trac there to give us better looks at it! We are Watching his slow demise.

The sad part of this presser is that Goodwin really believes what he is saying. He is a genuine guy.

The main problem is he needs to be Coached

For Simon it is 100% Defensive

People on here wer saying it in ‘22 even when we we winning (ugly)

We were very good at restricting opposition scores, but we very rarely scored heavily.

It’s been a slow burn ever since

Trac's body language wasn't off ( looking from the MCC member's stand). At times he was frustrated, disappointed at his inability to contribute in his normal manner.

He was treacle slow, appears overweight to me.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
