Kayo digital membership

$46 a month is a massive 50% price rise.

For a sports service that only has four "big" sports three of which are non exclusive (AFL, NRL and cricket) that's a big ask. F1 is exclusive but given its time zones is it really that big.

I always knew Foxtel/Kayo was a loss leader for Rupert but what worries me is that a back of the envelope calculation shows that even at $46 per month with everyone staying for 12 months it's still a loss operation.

Next stop... ban password sharing and bring on more ads.

DAZN are cashing in

It does my head in because the only sport I watch on Kayo is AFL, yet it is by far my most expensive streaming service.

They are certainly reducing the operating loss but it will be a painful road to profitability.

We're simply too small a market for ever increasing sports rights fees

I’m probably not quite as anti Kayo as some on here. For $450 I got MFC membership, MFCW membership and Kayo for a year. Reckon that probably works out for Kayo at $25p/mth. That is expensive compared to other steaming services but still just doable particularly considering I’d get it no matter what (I live interstate)

Is that the 4k service FND?

I wonder what the story is with these club deals. I assume Kayo think these people would have gone after 6 months and therefore they are giving 12 months for the price of 8. If you assume the club gets say $25 for the referral it's a bigger subsidy.

IMO Kayo need another killer sport such as EPL

password sharing banning is inevitable and that's when i think it'll be interesting to see what decision people make about how important 'seeing' the footy on tv actually is

we might be going back to the 90s where if you didn't go to the game, radio was yr best bet

no ads siren-to-siren is one of their major marketing callouts that you'd think they would be reluctant to lose

$45.99 a month, so from start of March to the end of August that is $275.94.
Digital Membership is now $375 for the year. Only really worth it if you want to watch F1 from September to December.

Really need to pick another sport up, good thing theyve seemingly retained F1 for a little longer.

It is premium which is apparently 4K

I used to keep Kayo running all year, now I am being selective and just subscribing during footy season and even cancelling when going on a mid-year break to Europe (and subscribe to the AFL's pricey overseas platform when abroad).

Part February and October gives 8 months of footy for around $400 value then Cricket, Basketball and Golf for me over the summer. Normally around $600 so good value plus 2 free general admission games on mine. THE BITES AND MINIS ARE GOOD when you don't want to watch it all

  • 3 weeks later...

Would you believe I today received an email from Kayo telling me that my membership is increasing to $29.99 per month and increase of $5.99 ( 1 stream in HD ). Hmm an almost 25% increase.

I will pay it because my wife cannot attend Games due to mobility problems ( gee the ageing process is fun). I use it for VFL games and replays etc. I do watch a bit of F1, I watch qualifying then highlights of the races. These days the race winner is mostly decided by their qualifying position. This summer my teenage Granddaughter has been keen to watch Basketball both NBA and NBL games we often watch games together when she visits ( she lives close). A story from just yesterday, we had returned home after an early evening game in which she plays. She rang me to see if she could use my Kayo account to watch a BB game. After the call it occurred to me that I probably spend more time watching and attending BB than I do Football ( Demonland excepted ) these days. She plays in two competitions one Friday nights (Rep league under 16's) and one late afternoon Saturdays (Domestic under 18's) we go to both. My wife can go because I can drop her at the door to the stadium and then its a 20 metre walk from there. Add in my reluctance to attend mid winter night games of AFL and I guess $30 a month is not bad value and fortunately for me I can afford it but a 25% increase is still hard to swallow.

I could look it up I suppose but how much is Foxtel sport these days?

Not to worry you OD but a ban on password sharing is almost a certainty in the next two years.

Then they will offer a version with ads and another more expensive version relatively ad free.

Kayo simply cannot make a profit in Australia given the cost of rights that the AFL and NRL have become used to. In years to come we will look upon Uncle Rupert as a great benefactor by comparison.

I am surprised she still gets away with it DJ. We will continue till they catch up with us. Leaving aside “ news” I seldom watch FTA programs I find a lot of the programs low grade. The multitude of so called reality shows appeal to the lowest level of humanity. I don’t think I am alone as overall FTA viewers seems to shrink every year. They seem to live off News, Sport and “Reality” [censored]. Most nights that I watch TV I go straight to the streaming Chanel’s. We pay for Netflix, Prime ( It’s a good offer as it gets you prime membership with advatanges on Amazon like free delivery) and Kayo. I actually watch quite a bit on SBS On Demand.

Spot on DJ we simply have too small of a population. Enjoy for the next couple of years. After that I may not care the body is fading fast. This may be the last season I attend games. I no longer go to mid winter night games or the way the Pies/Tigers games. Way to many people and I am not sitting in the oxygen deprived 3rd tier. As someone famous once said " you have to know your abilities".

I've heard a lot of complaints on here about the quality on Kayo with pixelation and even interruptions. I want to cancel Foxtel but footy is the only thing making me stay.

It would drive me crazy if there are streaming issues

Can people confirm how common the issues are on Kayo?

Has been stable for many years for me.

If your internet is prone to micro drop outs you may have a problem. This is simply because unlike Netflix where you are downloading and caching say 15 mins in advance of what you are watching live sport is more like 15 seconds. If you have NBN FTTP and ethernet connection you should be fine. Even with other connections you should be good.

It's a monthly contract which is easily cancelled so why not try it for a few weeks before cancelling your Foxtel.

The only time I watch FTA now is when the Grand Final or Aus Open is on. Been that way for more than 10 years. But watch plenty of ABC view/SBS on demand too.

I bought the digital

It has improved Dr. But last season it was still behind the picture quality of channel 7. When a match was on both 7 and Kayo we flicked between both and 7 was better. Over the summer I have replaced my tv set, it will be interesting to see if it improves this season. We only buy digital not 4K. The funny think if you watch a replay it was better than the live telecast. Better electronic brains than mine may be able to tell us why is it so. I have watched NBL games live over summer and the picture seems to be of good quality. I am looking forward to seeing the quality of the state of origin game later this month. If not for that test I would not bother. It's just a fob to the group who want state of origin returned.

It may depend on your internet od but the servers also take a hammering during big games due to the number of people watching which could impact the live feed. I've actually found the opposite in the past, live games were true HD whereas the replays had been condensed and looked to have a worse frame rate making them appear jittery when the camera was panning the ground.

Kayo is terrible. App is terrible, can't watch 4k on my 4k TV, casting to get 4k hangs all the time.

I have just received my Foxtel box, just for AFL & F1 thats how bad kayo is.

Last year Kayo Premium on the digital MFC membership was $350. This year it is $375. (A 7% increase)

I have no issues streaming it with 4K picture quality. (decent TV and decent internet connection at home)
