I suppose it would be nice and warm inside a bowling pin costume, as long as we donโ€™t wear them when itโ€™s hot. Last year we wore the Gussy helmets for round one and the temperature hovered around 30 degrees. It was the worldโ€™s worst case of mass bad hair day when the siren sounded and we ripped them off. Funnily enough, that match was a rare occasion where no one was hit in the head with the ball.

What about team selection on a Thursday night but in the format of the early 90s game show Man-O-Man where the whole squad lines up next to a swimming pool to be considered by the selection committee and those unsuccessful at the selection table get pushed into the pool one by one.

Love the idea of this thread,   Was it called barn storming 40 years ago.  Throw up (pardon the pun) 20 crazy ideas and they can morf after a couple of iterations into something with merit.  Now that might just happen.    Keep going

I thought this was a mea culpa.

But if I canโ€™t get an apology then a thread that has them all is something I supposeโ€ฆ

Ok Ghosty Tuesday nights then... you in???

 Some ideas

Kids and big kids, having a kick to kick with the selected emergency players at half time.

Have some big kids kick the new balls around so as to wear them in for the game, pre game.

Ballot some tickets to the pregame official functions, to the GA members, on an opt-in type system.

Invite the board members of suburban and country clubs to a "week with the club". Practical knowledge that will help support these clubs. Some ideas: how to run clubs, financial acumen, creating elite pathways, modern coaching and training skills.

Invite these suburban and country clubs to bring in their promising juniors for an orientation program and "what it takes" to make it as a professional.

Catch the new immigrants and turn them into Demon supporters. Free tickets and merchandise, instructions on the rules and approaches to the game.

Have a Demon radio program, that will broadcast the game on social media.

Much more official social media presence.

Keep the official MFC website up to date.

Ask the coaches to write a spiel about their objectives and the implementation strategies. End of year summaries would also be welcome, including the system they were working on.

More information from the inner sanctum.

End of year player kit give aways and/or auctions.

Get some kids to dress up in little Demon costumes and chase Checkers, Daisy, and Flash around pregame.

Annual low-key game.

For just one game each season, they don't set off fireworks, play junk noise in every pause in play, flick the lights on and off light a neurotic five year old, or have idiotic yelling about 'make some noiiiiiiiise' at any time during the day.

I'd be happy if they just turned the sound down to 130 decibels.

Yes! In particular, folks from India. Iโ€™ve met two separate Indian spectators at training whoโ€™ve asked me about the Demon Army and both have signed up, one signed up his girlfriend and the other signed up her son. Thatโ€™s four MFC & DA memberships.

Theyโ€™ve told me they chose Melbourne upon arriving in Australia because itโ€™s the name of the city they now call home. Besides that, theyโ€™re passionate Test Match cricket fans and that passion is easily funnelled into footy during winter.

Thereโ€™s a market just waiting to be tapped into!

Some good ideas from Kev. On the issue of getting kids on boardโ€ฆ I was in a pub at Halloween last year full of partygoers wearing demon headbands with red flashing horns. Thought these would be brilliant for kids (and big kids, and the DA) at the G, particularly for a night game with the red horns glowing in the crowd. Get a sponsor to source them (with obligatory logo somewhere to justify their cost) and give them away to kids at the gate? Or sell in the Demon shop? Horned caps? Anyway, Hawthorn had their wizard hats last year so why not?

Other giveaways might be considered to boost attendances. Went to an early season baseball game in the US and a glossy A3 team poster was presented to the first 10k through the gates. A few of these had also been autographed by the team making them a sought after collectible (and on eBay the next day).  Again, all paid for by sponsors.

Apologies if the horns idea has previously been mentioned or even trialled by the Club. News takes time to get here.

PS: On my last visit to Melbourne, I wanted to take a British Nigerian (now Australian) friendโ€™s two lads to the G to get them on board with the Demons. Dad, an evangelical Christian, refused, clearly worried I would turn them into devil-worshippers.

Mr Fence ๐Ÿ would be horrified, though maybe a recent camping trip to the Otways may have desensitized him. Last time I walked to cape Otway from the car park I encountered 2 tiger snakes (and a dead one as well) in a few minutes.

I love the HU - Wolf Totem!
Imagine 50,000 mad Dees fans chanting HU HU HU HU at the G on KB.
Enough to make Maynard poo his pants!

The ring on Maysieโ€™s finger (above) isnโ€™t a fashion statement. Itโ€™s like a Fitbit but worn on the finger, not the wrist. It monitors sleep, energy expended, heart-rate etc.

Howโ€™s this for a half-baked idea:

At the Season Launch Salo took his ring off and handed it to me. I said imagine how funny itโ€™d be if I wore it for the night. The Club would be justifiably worried sick about the data received and theyโ€™d be like wtf has happened to Christian? And theyโ€™d put him on the long-term injury list. ๐Ÿ˜…

We had a laugh about it but decided yeah nah, not funny at all.

In line with Dee Spencer's original idea, could we give lucky ones a chance to get on the microphone to pump up there crowd? They could let their 'inner demon out' and yell "rahhhhhhhh" and the crowd joins in.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyโ€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayโ€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonโ€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyโ€™s three matches and, with Melbourneโ€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekโ€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardโ€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnโ€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamโ€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneโ€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demonsโ€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the โ€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayโ€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
