Two club father?

Yes but played 100+ games for us and only 30-odd for his second club.

Is it just me, or does Aidan Johnson look like he's already put on a heap of size since joining the club?

Perhaps being a full time footballer contributes to this, more time to work on physical fitness when not working a full time job.

I reckon he's got that David Schwarz type of hypertrophy where if just touches the weights he puts on size.

Certainly body shape starts to change once you get get into the AFL program.  Even when I look at Campbell, and hes been around for awhile and perhaps he wasnt expecting the opportunity but he now looks more like an athlete rather than the backup ruckman from the '70s.

He made a point of saying it’s nothing, he can’t even feel anything amiss at all, the club is simply not taking even the slightest unnecessary chance. I hadn’t asked him about it, he brought it up and the thing with Shane is that he can’t hide when he’s bummed out over an injury. It really shows. But he is just as buoyant and confident as he has been lately and that’s very telling.

Would be a great reason for getting off the track and into the pool.  Ive been doing the same myself, less percusive but still able to do resistance and flexibility development.

True... but still wouldn't need to be a secret I wouldn't have thought

I've done a little research and I think we have 7 players who have played over 100 with us and another club.

Jeff Farmer

Jeremy Howe

Bernie Vince

James Frawley

Steven May

Jake Melksham

There is one I'm unsure of who played 109 games for Melbourne and then 102 for Carlton.... fun little quiz for your Thursday

Where’s @Demonstone when we need him?

I believe you need to go back a bit further and look for a Daniher era defender

Can't find any that fit the bill sorry.... Please enlighten me

The Jefferson vs Jed Adams contest was very interesting to watch. The coach was just kicking it high into the air and they had to grapple and use their strength to win it. It did seem like Adams won maybe 6 and Jeffo won 2 - but it was clear that the kind of grappling and wrestling isn't really Jeffersons natural mode at all. I don't think he's ever going to be a gorilla type full or centre half forward that can push opponents around.
Based on his under 18s and VFL highlights his skill is more at reading the play and getting into the right spots where he can take either an uncontested mark or be in front of his opponent and use his long levers to reach up and grab it. He also seems quite good at getting front and centres, ground balls, linking up with handballs and doing some more small or medium type forward actions.
I wouldn't say his intensity was an issue. You could tell he was trying hard and was frustrated that Jed kept beating him.
He also contributed a bit in the match simulations. It will be interesting to see how he goes this year! Fingers crossed he gets a taste of AFL footy and can offer something to the forward line

From what I’ve seen in training videos and down at training, Adams has also really improved this off season and looks bigger, stronger and more confident.

Nah I looked into him, didn't play over 100 for either

I remember him being touted as a future captain

Another big thanks to Ghostwriter, DeeSpencer, DeeBoy, Ditcha, Harvey Wallbanger, Turner and Fritta and all posters and special comments greatly appreciated. Great to hear that Rick and JV were there after the 4 days in the NT with Kate Hore and Ricky Mentha representing our mighty club in 40+ degree heat, Rick & JV had their families with them as well.👏👏.

In order to have a successful season they say you need as many of your list doing 80% of full training sessions over pre season. This is the following "23" that have had a flawless or near flawless pre season (according to DL reports) as we head into the praccy match against North. These players have given themselves every opportunity to excel in 2025 (touchwood):

B       Hore   May   Howes

HB     Salem   McDonald   Bowey

C       Windsor    Rivers     Langdon

HF     Fritsch     Petty     Billings

F       Pickett      JVR      A Johnson

FOLL   Campbell  Oliver    Viney

INT     Billings    Laurie    AMW    Sharp    Langford

E Jefferson  Adams  Verrall  Sestan  Mentha   Woewodin  Brown

I estimate that 13 players have done less than 80% and they include best 23 mainstays in McVee, Petracca, Lever, Spargo, Turner, Gawn, Melksham, Chandler, Sparrow, while Tholstrupp, McAdam, Lindsey are around the fringes of our senior side.

Whether that latter group number is too high remains to be seen, and it would be interesting to compare these numbers with our 2020/2021 pre season.

I thought it was Ryder Brown too. Had myself convinced he had a similar gait to Pup and the same body-type: long body, short legs, low centre of gravity. So I asked around and it seemed no one was sure who he was. Then Richo told a couple of us he was a f/s and told us his name. After training I was introduced to him as a different first name but another Demonlander has worked out he is the f/s about whom Richo told us only Richo got his first name wrong. So yeah, he’s the son of a former player but for some reason Richo stressed we can’t post it anywhere.

This is very strange.... wonder why we can't talk about a F/S player given they are available to us if we want?

Is it possible the former player doesn't know he has this son?

I think Trac and Gawn is hard to assess, as they have both been able to do a lot of running but have just been held back from contact. I don’t think they would count as not doing 80% for that reason.

You can add Chandler to that list

First time I’ve seen him in the flesh and he’s a huge lump of a lad. I don’t think it’s alarm bells Jeffo was getting moved around so much.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
