That's true, but you have to at least try and have some selection integrity.

We have players in our forward line who are in terrible form.

He kicked 5-2, missed two sitters and dropped a mark 20 out straight in front so should have kicked 8.

We went after Wade Dersen last year, who will be 24 in two months, is 7 cms shorter then Fullarton and hasn't played a single AFL game yet.

we recruited a 50 game 28yo in McAdam

The fact that we've had so many of our best players with a foot out the door over the past few years should be enough to get Goodwin sacked on its own.

“Players with a foot out the door” Interesting metric. I’d sooner go with something solid like “Players with both feet out the door, ie. gone”

Personally don't think it's great for the team to have some of the most highly paid and decorated players trying to facilitate moves out of the club.

A lot of grey area involved when you’re talking about players wanting/attempting to leave a club. Nothing is proven. Who do you believe? Looking in from the outside, It’s largely speculation and guesswork.

Players who’ve actually left a club… well, that’s an absolute.

Is there a substantial difference? When you’re discussing the sacking of a coach, hell yeah there’s a difference, a huge difference.

Just to remind you of what you said…

Cats players have openly spoken about meeting Oliver during the trade period, he also has had several years of off-field issues that have not helped his position. Playing okay at the moment but still nowhere near his best.

Petracca the same, he tested the market last year and we essentially had radio silence from him for weeks. He's back in the fold but I'm hardly convinced he's 100% committed to this team.

I get that your position on these things is essentially that until a player has left or openly stated their intentions it's a big nothing to see here. But I think these off-field episodes have left a visible disunity in the team. A big part of a coaches job is to manage the egos of their players and I think both Petracca and Oliver have been allowed to do a lot more than what would be accepted of other players. Both have had issues around them that I don't believe have been managed well and that mismanagement has exaccerbated a bad situation.

Goodwin has boasted that over the off-season some heart-to-heart conversations have given the club clear air but I'm not convinced. The players look less unified than ever on the field and I don't think saying love a lot is going to heal the wounds left by everything that has gone on over the past couple of years.

Goodwin still has some time on his side. I don't see us sacking him until the middle of the year at least. We'll need to see a big big turnaround though and if we don't I believe it's likely we'll have even more players looking to go elsewhere.

I still think he would make a quality full back.

He could well end up there if we can find better forward options.

I'll see you, and raise you. Tom Campbell. 33yo and 58 games (at three clubs).

Being 2m tall goes a long way in this game.

And also a decent character

I think we draft well, but recruit poorly eg Bilings, Sharp etc

⬆️ This is to what I referred. Nothing else, just this.

Thank goodness there isn't a mid season trade period. Half the squad would request to leave due to not being a Goodwin 'favorite'.

CORRECT!

Was looking forward to seeing him play this week. Should have known better. Unbelievable that Goody can just write off a bloke.

Maybe the onus is on Tom to play more than 3 good games before he gets a shot.

The problem is, it’s only Tom who’s expected to do that.

The way I see it is you can easily rank all players on our list in terms of ability.

At some point, you draw a line and the players above that line are AFL quality. Basically they are never getting dropped because they are simply too good for VFL. e.g. Max, Trac, May, Lever.

Below that line are a group of players who are borderline AFL. They'll be in the team unless really out of form, and as you go down this list, the less likely you will be of being selected any given week.

Then there is another line, and below that are depth or development players, basically players who are not yet anywhere near AFL standard. Now these players have the capacity to play really well at VFL but that doesn't mean they will be able to perform at AFL, the jump is massive. So these players often need to display more than 2 good games at VFL to get promoted. They need a long term, rich vein of form, that demonstrates their skills and characteristics have changed, and they are now worth a try at AFL level.

This is why some players come straight back in and others don't get dropped even when out of form.

3 good games?? Yeah well he has done that, meanwhile Fritsch, Viney, Spargo, JVR, !Melksham, Petty, Sparrow, Salem, Sharp, Henderson et al get a GIFTED RUN! I FEEL for Disco! SCAPEGOAT

Sorry Tom

Would have loved to see you debut for the club.

Maybe you need to kick 15 goals this week to get a look in

Do NOT break glass....

Tom Fannington still wouldn't get a game. Once you're on the blacklist you're out. Such a loving atmosphere we're cultivating for some

Selection integrity. I am sure there are some players who would agree with that line Red.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
