The club’s Next Generation Academy member from its former Darwin zone finally broke into the Melbourne team in his third season as a Category B Rookie. He fitted well into the higher standard of football and impressed with his ball winning ability at this level. Earned the right to promoting and will be an interesting watch now that we know he has a place in senior AFL football.

Happy with AMW.  Showed some good dash, initiative & desperation when he played seniors.

Also made errors which is to be expected. If he can tidy up some parts of his game he could slot in as a regular player.

good player, loads of potential. speed, hard and gutsy.

Looking forward to seeing a lot more of AMW next year, I like his speed and hardness at the man and ball.

Looking forward him taking the step next season.  Another preseason under his belt and the confidence he got from his games this year.

Get his fitness up and I can see a situation where he's in our best 22.

Kid has potential.

He really surprised me. I felt he had become a very good VFL player whose skills would not transfer up to AFL standard. Very happy to put my hand up and say I got it wrong. He was very good for his 6 games and is probably competing with Jake Bowey for a spot as a small defender.

His main issue is definitely his fitness. He was playing so well, but in most of his 6 games, he was making errors in the last quarter, simply because he could not get to the next contest, or be caught out of position through exhaustion. A good preseason will fix this.

I like what I have seen so far, but I am a bit concerned with the fitness aspect.

he is 22 now, been with the club 3 years, Fitness should not be an issue by now, he has developed his skills across to AFL which is great, but his tank should already at it's prime.

He was spent by about the 2nd quarter and his skills didn't really translate after the first half of the Brisbane game.

He has a nice combination of speed and aggression but if we're being honest he was a mile from AFL level but got games because we had run out of anyone better.

Bit harsh

He was one of the better ball users, clean below his knees and also actually tackled.

When was the last time ANB, Bowey laid a decent tackle?

Offers that aggression down back that we don't have

Fitness will get better which will keep him in the side over Bowey, Howes

I always liked AMW through his early development and keen to see him progress.  Liked his rugby bs ground and competitive streak.
Was a small forward who converted to a half back at Casey and showed ability to win and deliver plenty of the footy.
At AFL level once promoted, he played more of a lock down type defender role.  Allowed McVee to be tried in the midfield.  Played 6 games to give him a taste. Not in my starting “22” for round 1 2025 but will prove himself once he’s called up through the year.  A big preseason ahead for Andy.

Smooth mover, plenty to like.

Could we try AMW at half forward also? I think he has skills around goals also which might prove very valuable for our attack.

This might also react in his favour if his fitness is in doubt.
But the Club would be all over this already I have no doubt. Wing might be another chance. Has he got the pace and tank?

Should be a big improver I reckon along with Blake Howes nowhere had had a very promising debut season. He has also huge potential up forward.

I have a feeling we may see him spend time in the middle.

Needs to work on his disposal a little bit a lot to like about this young bloke.

Limited game time so I don't believe we have come close to seeing his full talent.

Hard at the contest.

Cannot agree with this Dee Spencer. Not only do I think he looks up to it, I actually think he has the potential to be a really important run and carry player for us. I did see the Brisbane game and I agree in part, but 'a mile' off is ludicrous.

100%

He has a real opportunity to take that HB role that's been left by Rivers and Salem

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
