    Happy to give this guy a crack considering the lack of established options coming into trade period.

    He’ll cost nothing and has upside. In the absence of better external options, we lose nothing from seeing what Derksen has at the level. We had interest when he was taken in the MSD, so he’s been on the radar for a while.

    Like others I haven't ever seen him play, so thanks for videos from his pre-GWS days and he does look the goods - but so do many that have junior video highlights.

    But a quick look at his numbers in the VFL for the Giants tells me that he is a moneyball pick of the highest order - potentially a pick that will save Tim Lamb's job. How many forwards take 12 marks and have 25 disposals - as he did in a loss to Willy. The week before he was quieter in a 50-point loss but still kicked a couple. The week before it was 17 disposals and two goals in a one-point loss, although he did have a shot at a matchwinner. He was prominent against us the week before - 19 disposals, five marks, three tackles. That's a lot of disposals for a tall.

    His height is somewhere between 194cm and 197cm - that's tall and he can play back-up ruck - tick.

    He can kick it a long way based on the videos and with both feet - tick.

    He is still only 23 - that's way better than drafting/trading in players who are at end of career such as Membrey or Taberner and given that he has been in the system for two years is ready to play AFL - tick.

    He can play both down back and up forward, which means if jnjuries happen to our ageing tall defenders, he can be sent there or Petty can.  

    He is from a club that boasts the best talls - Taylor, Buckley, Cadman and Hogan - tick - which explains why he didn't get an AFL gig.

    He has at least one mate at club already - AMW - and apparently has family in Melbourne - tick. 

    If anyone has any major doubts then let us know - he may not have high tackle numbers but nor do many talls.

    So what do we give up for him?

    I'd say we'd have to give up our second rounder or the pick we receive from Adelaide for ANB - any deal involving our pick 5 should be immediately shut down.

    And given that he looks ready to play, the length of his contract should be three years, just in case he struggles with the extra expectations of playing AFL. I'd imagine he is on somewhere between 200-250K at present, so his deal should come with a new $400-$450K salary.

     To me, it's the first good trade news we've had since Ed and Ben.

    I'd say a 3rd or 4th rounder gets it done if we wanted to trade for him. A second round pick offer is for established players only, which he currently isn't.

    Way overs. A mature age mid-season draftee who hasn't played a single game at AFL level is in no way worth pick 25 in a trade. Trading second round picks is for established AFL players such as Langdon, Hibberd, Melksham, and Grundy for us in recent years.

    The average AFL salary is $450k. Why would you give a mature age mid-season draftee $400-$450k? He'd be paid more than talented kids and established players, including some premiership players. It would be poor salary cap management.

    Realistically, we offer our last pick - pick 61 - and lowest possible salary. He doesn't command anything more.

    All our other picks are too valuable to waste on him, even the picks in the 40s and 50s hold enough points that they'll likely be part of a package to trade up the board with Brisbane, Gold Coast, and others that needs points for academy and father sons draftees.

    They didn’t play him when Buckley and Taylor were out, and they’ve preferred Keeffe as a forward. If he was out of contract he’d be free. Still contracted for a year but twins on the way so reasons to be compassionate. 3rd rounder should do it

    Pick 61 for Derksen and 70. A goodwill trade, shake hands and wish each other well.
    Hope he locks a role with us long term, as cover for brown, Tomlinson or schache, I like to see it. Without seeing him play much, the stats and profile tick the right boxes.

    Can he play ruck or more importantly is he an upgrade on Fullerton? Fullerton can't ruck hopefully Derkson can do a better job.

    We have picks 5, 38, 45 and 50 and Derksen for pick 61 or pick 50 at worst. Adelaide don't have a second round pick so I'm expecting a future 2nd round pick for Neal-Bullen.

    Nah Adelaide has pick 25 this draft which has already been talked about coming our way for ANB

    My mistake I saw 24 going to St.Kilda. Neal-Bullen for McAdam doesn't seem right we got ripped off there. I'd be asking for a future second rounder as well.

    Giants also have Riccardi, Brown and Gruzewski who didn’t play in their finals team.

    With those you named in Buckley, Taylor, Cadman and Hogan and the others above, he is just not getting a game.

    It's not, but that's neither here nor there.
    We overpaid for McAdam. That's in the past, and we have to move on.
    Pick 25 for Nibbler is probably about correct, but I wouldn't be surprised if we shuffle some later picks to benefit Adelaide as well.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
