Pick 5 is concerned about MFC crowd size, Casey travel time, their brand, amount of MFC supporters on instagram and … the lack of heated towel rails in the change rooms.

Are we thinking we need inside ball winners to help with clearances or some outside class to help with our ball movement & inside 50 connection?

The top 10 is stacked with both of these types so unsure what JT will have in mind.

One or 2 may be available at our pick but it depends how they are ranked. Now that Tracc has committed and Riv is giving mid a shot and pup looks like he will make it Trainor may be a chance. .

Luke Trainor did not play round 19 Coates but had a cracker round 18. Just keeps getting better as the season progresses. See rookie me scouting motes below.

You’d be forgiven for thinking Trainor was a midfielder given how often he popped up in the front half, getting forward as often as possible early in the piece, and contributed to chain possession plays for his side. Though, he was his typical self with his aerial presence when Geelong attempted to get into its forward half. With some freedom to push forward, Trainor utilised his precision kicking heading forward, often kicking well to the advantage of his teammates on the lead. Trainor looked a little rushed and unclean at times under pressure, but his effort never wavered.

I'd absolutely be trying to be aggressive in getting access to two players in the top 15, and maybe even a third player inside the top 20.

I'm sort of torn on how to approach this draft period. I think we take pick 5 and will most likely take a midfielder which will give us 3 first round mids in two years.

Given its an even draft with a good smattering of talls as well, there's a good chance we'll pick up a kid with pick 25 (ANB) that we'll really like.

I'm wondering if it's worth while to retain our first pick for next year, not just for the possibility of finishing in the bottom half, but to attract and be able to purchase a mid that's in the 22 - 25 age bracket to compliment our older and younger players. Think Butters or Callaghan.

A consequence of always trading out our future picks is not being able to get those sort of deals done.

I'm also wary of picking up too many 18yr old mids in one year from an age profile perspective and not being able to give them opportunity.

I hope we have an eye on a couple of talls this year as well considering we are losing a lot of depth there.

History tells us that we've often been quite creative in terms of getting better placed in the draft

For instance, we moved up in the draft order from pick 6 to pick 3 in order to acquire Oliver

But moving up is one thing, acquiring another first round pick would be tricky to pull off

Agreed, but this was back in the day where Mahoney was a key player, as was Todd Viney. I trust JT, but the jury is out on Tim Lamb for me unfortunately. I think Tim has strengths, but we don't seem to be as nimble and efficient in trading up as we were, but there's probably a large amount of luck in all this.

Lamb's been mostly doing the wheeling and dealing while we've been in the window hasn't he? Tougher to trade up and navigate pick swaps when your future picks are projected to be [censored]

Although we absolutely need a forward/ruck unless we go again with Fullarton (who couldn't even get a run when Max was out)

If we acquired a forward/ruck who is not just depth, do we keep Petty, JVR & Turner in the forward line as well?  Probably not

May, Lever & T-Mac down back is enough but maybe Petty goes back in a swing role (if we add in a forward/ruck) In that situation, T-Mac becomes depth? 

And there are injuries to consider especially with Lever & May

Look, maybe I should retract my previous comment, because I'm not 100%. I thought Mahoney was often driving it, but as list manager, Tim would have played a significant role. But things don't appear to have worked as well since Viney and Mahoney left, so I can only assume they played a greater part.

I think our talls are alright for next year.

We need to put our chips into beefing up the midfield and a small lockdown defender to release McVee higher. But maybe AMW can play this role?
