Regardless of your emotions PF Goody will be our Coach for next year. I agree he will be under the pump though, he must update his coaching template, or else he will be moved on.
Personally i hope he can change his coaching philosophy and also be more proactive on Matchday

If nothing changes... nothing will, expect more of the same Garbage!

I expect changes. I have said that all along.
But i expect the right changes to be made. I do not want a mass exodus

Every game starts with how you want to set up first, so you are saying that the 2 main midfielders in Gawn and Viney cannot change it when things go wrong? Remember you only have 4 times to send a runner out a quarter and after goals but the players would would have the ability to be able to change it don't put it all on McQualter remember he was in charge of the midfield at Richmond when their midfield was flying so he has credits in the bank for that.

You also seem to forget we had the same problems with Yze and he wanted to play a different game style for the midfield when he was there but he couldn't because of the gameplan, our midfield is one paced, lack foot skills, lack of decision making ability they are grunt players and until they change that we will struggle next year McQualter needs cattle to work with so to speak.

McQualter and Dimma were, in most cases throughout their premiership reign, happy to give up first possession clearance and instead sweat / pressure their opponents off that first clearance attempt.

Their aim wasn't to set up and win most of the first possi / then clear but instead look to get the ball back on turnover and chaos the ball forward into a fairly open forward line.

They had the closing speed and white line pressure players to do the above through the middle.

Beyond Rivers late in the season and some minutes from Koz, we didn't have much of that closing pressure capability as our core make up through the middle in 24.

Very one paced and ploddy outside of those two.

So i would then be wondering, is Mcq looking to bring similar mid field sweat and pressure tactics to our game, but without the cattle capable of playing that way to regain the ball on turnover and chaos i50?

We also lost players that could play the usual Melb (win clearance) way with Clarry a fsir way off his best / finger issues, losing Gus from the get go and then losing Tracc (not that he's a huge clearance beast) half way.

You coach with what you have got and it would have been different if they had Gawn in those years as he was a better tap ruckman then, in regards to our midfield and will say it again one paced they have endurance but not speed, Viney, ANB, sparrow, Trac who will play more forward than midfield going forward, Oliver has some speed but a shocking decisionmaker, Kossie is not a midfielder for a couple of reasons and should be left as a forward full stop.

As a line Coach not the Senior one.

Nooooooo...he strongly endorsed Neeld for our gig.

Make what you like of that.

Yes but he was a line Coach at Pies.

I would endorse the lollipop guy at the grandkids school to Coach the Blues or Pies.

If he is gone, Go hard at Hinkley.

If they lose this weekend he is gone, apparently an amazing player person and has proven he is a good coach too.

Obviously finals an issue, but we need some stability atm and he is a great option to help goody.

No thanks. We already have an amazing player person in Goodwin

We need master tacticians and Ken is well, not

He and Goodwin would work well together, both have good game plans.  between the two they could find the right formula.
And all good to say that, but they don't grow on trees, McQualter was exactly that and no one wants him now, even with the rough hand he was delt.

I'm clearly looking at him from a million miles away, but I've never rated McQualter. I hope he leaves, and I hope West Coast sign him for 10 years.

No. A head coach is first and foremost a people manager. Tactics and line coaching is often managed by a whole host of coaches, including opposition analysts.

Including managing the other coaches.

Worth digging out the interview that Burgess gave when he left late 2021, where there are real insights into Goodwin's capabilities in that regard.

I am a bit bemused as to whether the Coach is meant to be everything, or manage everything.

I think the latter is fine.

We know the players love Goody and that is a good start.

If he has the right people to run the game plan, match day moves and fitness, then we would seem to be well coached, would we not?

Goody doesn’t appear to make moves on the day,  that is fine if the guys in the box are doing a good job.

If the tactical guys are not good enough then change them.

I wonder if Scott and Mitchell take the same path ??

Not thinking so.  I suspect their priorities lay with the football more than the  kum-by-yah approach.

I like the idea of a good gameplan and capable tactical moves/alterations to style , appropriate for the day.

Haven't seen much of late. Buck stops with one person.

It usually does, but I heard Cats players say Scott just said go out and enjoy yourself. Pretty kum-by-yah if you ask me.

I hardly think Mitchell and Scott do everything. They both have several assistant coaches, what do they do then if Scott and Mitchell do everything, et the drinks.

Coaching is a team effort of several people and often the Coach is the man manager.

I don't know the details of contracts and so on with this, but Steven King is known to be an incredible tactical coach, i think if Mini goes to the Eagles and i suspect they'll get either him or King, we should try to prize King out of the Cats to be our next senior assistant and manage our offense.

No point going for Hinkey as I see him as a very similar coach as Goodwin, and also one that would cause constant speculation of a takeover.

We need a coach that complements Goodwin’s skillset & he lacks a bit in the tactical dept. Always heavily relied on McCartney in that aspect, although had improved, still not a strong suit at AFL coach level.

How likely is it we prize a Geelong great from Geelong?

Who knows, we'd have to sell it that Yze held the position and got the Richmond job, he was replaced by Mini who might well get the eagles job so perhaps it's a good career move for someone like King if he has designs on a senior coaching gig.

Wish him well should he go. Don't think he has displayed anywhere near the same level of tactical nous as Yze and we have been poorer for it.
