The Great Pretender 480 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Before we think of trading early draft picks we need to get a handle on the depth of the draft. According to the pundits this one is deep at the top end. We don’t have to trade picks up from 6 to 4 - we might get our player anyway. 1 Quote
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Draft and develop, plus recruit role players with high character and leadership via free agency, build up salary cap space and make big moves while winning to maximise how attractive we are in the marketplace. 3 1 Quote

They had a lot of players to trade out due to just always having an insanely stacked list. We don’t have a spare Taranto and Hopper lying around sadly. But it was the draft for Tom Green (and Ash) and Finn Callaghan. Don’t muck around with early picks. Then trading for Hogan who took years to really come good. Picking up a nice roll player in Bedford. And otherwise waiting for youth to come through. Replace ANB and Brayshaw with the best mids we can find in the 24-26 range just to fix the depth and health of the list. Fill out the depth talls too and maybe take a punt on someone with high upside. But otherwise JT with a top 7 pick and hopefully a few more in the top 40 of a deep draft. We have a shed load of blokes on good coin that can't hit a target. 1 1 Quote
Little Goffy 14,970 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Draft now (Smilie and both Whitlocks) into free agency 2025 (Brayshaw and both De Konings) into premiership 2026-2028. Somehow I'm still sustaining a small sliver of optimism 2 2 Quote

Young Blood 2,642 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 (edited) For me it has to be both. We will have to be really active and creative - Split the picks: Our pick 6/7 for Gold Coasts 10+20 and a player back perhaps) - Use first pick - Trade second first rounder for Houston (or other similar caliber player) - ANB for pick 27 (crows) or 32 (Port) - Sign Peatling (the exact player we should be prioritizing... basically another Rivers) Look at other out of favour players like Ben Hobbs, Reef McInnes/Finlay Macrae, Matthew Owies, Jack Lukosius. Any other similar suggestions? Edited August 15, 2024 by Young Blood 1 1 Quote

A very hard call. Depends who is available and hind sight is spectacular and always correct You have to understand when we recruited those players we had cap space. It’s a lot harder to recruit quality when you have tight cap which we would have had over the few years 1 Quote

Dr. Gonzo 24,468 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 (edited) Draft for talent and trade for needs I don't think we can go all-in on the draft by trading out our senior players considering the depth that's walked out the door the last couple of years. Senior players we may be willing to let go like Salem aren't going to get us much. We already have too much dead wood on the list without trading out potential best 22. I didn't think I'd say it after the flag but 3 years later our list is in a real hole. Schache, Brown, Fullarton, Hunter, Billings, Smith all need to be turned over. Brayshaw and ANB are done. Tomlinson will likely leave. TMac and Melksham may have 1 year left if that. Then you have guys like Laurie, Jefferson, Howes, Verrell, Farris White, AMW, Adams, McAdam, Sestan, K Brown, Taj and Kolt who have shown a bit but not enough to know whether they will make it long term or not. It is not beyond redemption but it is teetering on the precipice. A good offseason could see us bounce back quickly, a poor one could see us down for another decade. John Demonic 5,988 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 (edited) What do DL folk think about trading a future 1st to get another first rounder this year? Some clubs might think it will be a top 5 pick, whereas internally they're thinking we'll be contending again. Ripe conditions to trade it. Which team could be willing to part with theirs? (If its not being used on Houston) Edited August 15, 2024 by John Demonic 2 Quote

Take best available at pick 5/6 and maybe we can trade our future first and get another pick around 10/12. 1 Quote
