Play him in the Forward line. 15 years in the Midfield is a long time, we could still get a few good seasons with him in the side if he could help kick a score

He could certainly lay a lot more crunching tackles in a congested forward line than most of his compatriots

The club has always ignored his terrible disposal because he is so brave, passionate and an accumulator of disposals. The result is when he drops his disposal numbers he looks ordinary as he can’t rely on finding a man with the few disposals he gets. He has been poorly coached for much of his time at the Club.

This post makes me want the old 'thinking face' reaction option back.

I'd be slightly generous to him and say his disposal was 'unreliable', but even then, unreliable is not good. It is a little bit like there are two possible points of failure in each disposal - sometimes it is a poorly executed kick, sometimes it is a poor decision for the kick, and sometimes it comes together in a single crucial moment that costs you a semi-final (notwithstanding the team effort to kick 2.6 in the final quarter).

It does make me lean a little more in favour of Viney going up forward. Let him be the hunter-killer in the chaos, where even a brain fart can still get surprising results with much less risk.

Sad but true.

Who and when was an underperforming ‘big name’ player dropped? Can’t remember myself.

Grundy.

But the less said about that the better..

If you're not over his horrible disposal and terribly dumb decision making I'm not sure you're breathing.

If it wasn't bad enough that he cost us the final against Carlton, he then screws the club at the end of last year in order to extend his contract by taking advantage of the mess the club was in with Petracca, Oliver and Pickett.

His one in 6 or 7 ''hard'' games, when he actually does play well, doesn't suffice.

The cliff comes quickly for some players and it's come for him. And he's here for 4 more years !!

Lamb is a moron who blinked and I doubt Goodwin has the balls to drop him. Just stuck with him.

Wasn’t Lamb stuck in a pretty hard place with everything though?

Interest from North for Viney for more money (who went on to win our B&F), Petracca frankly burning the club down publicly at the time of Viney’s signing (considering Tracc wouldn’t deny any of the media reports which is tacit confirmation he was ready/threatening/wanting to leave) and we were, now known factually, floating Oliver around to other clubs because he was off the rails.

What leverage did Lamb have to work with considering the club was an absolute [censored] show at the time? If Viney left, there would be a 1000 page thread on ‘why didn’t we re-sign our 2024 B&F player’ right now and how it’s one of our biggest failures.

Viney still had a year to run at the end of last season.

Is this a lesson in the pitfalls of trusting AI? Locked in until 2024 season? If he signed a 4 year extension, then doesn’t that mean 25,26,27,28?

The original deal was to 2025. He is now signed for 3 more years.

Right ok, thank you for the correction, then I’m wrong @Gator . He did indeed Blink.

Never trusting Google AI again.

AI: Pregnant women can eat portugese tarts quite safely.

Also AI: pregnant women should absolutely avoid portugese tarts because an ingredient is raw egg.

Y'see, it depends on how you ask and what the AI picks at semi-random to use.

If it stumbles across and prioritises advice from, say, the UK NHA, then it will use that to confirm Portugese tarts are fine.

If it hits a recipe first, then it will see 'fresh eggs' and say, oh, no no no, none for you. Nevermind that the recipe includes, you know, cooking the eggs.

This is also why AI can credit the B-17 bomber with 100% of submarine sinkings by air power in the European theatre of WW2; B-17s were a part of the combined operations group which hunted submarines, and the AI is only looking for the B-17s and doesn't place them in context (in this case, context means the presence of Catalinas or Lancasters or Wellingtons etc).

Combine fact [B-17s exist in air group X] with fact [number of submarines sunk by air group X] and you get 'AI fact' [B-17s number of submarines sunk].

It is really important to not use AI for pretty much anything. The fact that you can't turn off the Google results 'AI summary' is a disaster that has probably already killed people, nevermind ruining school projects or causing confusion on a footy forum.

Pardon the digression. My goat was got.

Nah it was a good digression! Very interesting WW2 plane knowledge. And yes you’re right, AI is very problematic. I was reading about model collapse the other day and although I don’t know very much about technical stuff, it intuitively seems correct. The more AI generates results, the more it becomes self referential and spoils the information pool.

My guess would be that Jack isn't 100%, he was pretty good last season with out much help. His contact has another 3 years to flattern his payments in the clubs interests l imagine. If he plays vfl and guides the young blokes in his final year or two l can live with that

Veteran presence, as they say. It would be a credit to his humility if he were willing to see out the contract as a kind of playing coach at Casey and back-up hard body at senior level.

It's hard to find a pattern on Viney's form over his career because so often he's played injured or heavily niggled, and carried an excess burden of hits to protect young stars.

Personally I'm getting angrier and angrier at the football world and beginning to think it is time we started 'asserting ourselves physically' on field and calling out the bs off the field.

Losing Brayshaw was a really damaging blow to the club, but I feel like amicably tolerating Maynard's existence in the following KB game was the moment our club really stumbled.

What do you stand for if you'll just 'aww shucks oh well' at something like that.

Anyway... Viney. Not shy of the physical stuff and an occasional mid-season rest might do him good.

Viney’s been an excellent player for us, yes the contract is too long but only if the price is exorbitant. Stop belittling his career, he’s a great of the club. Not only has he played his share of cracker games he’s driven standards.

Agreed fully. We might be managing some payments down - who knows.

He's been a wonderful player for us. Not an AFL great but a Demons great. He'll also be a wonderful on-field coach leader in time and drives a ferocious standard that I'm happy to have around the club to help develop and protect the young crop. Extending his contract (subject to it being for ridiculous coin) is not a concern of mine.

What's interesting this year is seeing where he is touching the pill. He's usually roughly on parody between contested and uncontested ball. This season, his uncontested disposals are doubling that of his contested.

Looks like a slight different in role/structure for Jack where he is getting more of it on outside.

Bit of a worry for mine as he's never been an overly wonderful kick of the ball. Wouldn't mind him back in and under.

100%. We don’t want him getting too much on the outside as it isn’t his go. We need him winning at the coalface and then shovelling out to the good ball users. Same with Clarry.

I would happily pay half his contract or give up a pick if we could get him out.

Have said it once and will say it again.

There is nothing "heart and soul" about taking advantage of the club being in the [censored] to get a long contract extension when you're in the condition he is in.

He has been either co-captain or vice captain for the past 10 seasons, he should bear some of the brunt for the standards in the playing group.

Was thinking this earlier. Last year we had so many injuries I guess it was a bit harder, but can't be a continued excuse.

We don't drop senior players. In fact I'm not sure there is an example of any tough/ruthless decisions within the club.

Which is why Brad Green needs to step up and drive some ruthless changes!

AI is flawed and biased because the data it relies on is human generated and therefore flawed and biased

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
