    I don’t believe for one second a supporter truly believed our season was over after the opening round match. Same goes for people claiming they knew before the season even started. I just don’t believe that’s possible. How could anyone muster even the slightest enthusiasm for the season when they “know” the season is over before it even starts?! I call a big bunch of BS on that. Sure, you may have concerns at the time, but the question posed is when did you know season 2024 was over. 

    You judged my post right WCW. All losses provide info or reactions but like the Club need to be assessed and plans formed to solve problems etc. 

    Until it’s mathematically possible I generally don’t write off season or a game during quarter as it’s always possible like Round 23 vs Cats in 2021.

    In for the long haul !

    Winning isn't everything. I like being a spectator, and will enjoy listening to these last games.

    Do you mean not making finals, not being competitive, or not a grandfinals contender? All that doesn't detract me from enjoying the game.

    We are still a competitive team.

    Those expressing this realistic though sour assessment are bad losers.

    We got beaten by better teams on the day. If a few of the close results went our way, the season appraisal would've been different 

    Hoping we still build and don't fall down further. I guess the geniuses expressing prophecy on this site, already know.

    I was foolishly holding out hope (without evidence it was possible) that we'd catch fire at the end of the year, but when GWS kicked four goals in four minutes I knew the situation was hopeless. Even if we'd come back to win it would have been like unnecessarily keeping somebody on life support when you know they're not going to recover.

    Realistically, it was the second Freo game. The West Coast loss or the Alice Springs debacle could have been written off as blips, but we looked like Melbourne 10 years ago that day and I still can't work out how the margin wasn't more than our first game against them.

    no teams gets dismantled like we did that day and then show such a lack of desire in a big game like king's birthday, compounded by losing our best / second best player, and is likely to play finals

    i thought our start to the year was very encouraging, given the off-season, but we completely came to a halt mid-year

    The second Freo game. We just couldn’t get anywhere near the ball and looked cooked. The game had massive West Coast 2018 Prelim vibes 😑.

    I concur...   we got no traction early and results didnt bode well.

    In a sense it wasn't so much when did it finish, for us as did it ever really get going.. We seemed quite adept at tripping ourselves up at any opportunity.

    I assumed the Brisbane loss was an aberration but I saw the West Coast loss live and it was ugly and disturbing. Harked back to the Neeld days.

    The answer might run along the lines of why anyone barracks for the Dees still... 60 years  on.   Because you do..   You grow accustomed to mediocrity.  The abberation is success..

    Normal viewing's returned it seems.

    Charlie Brown is a Dees supporter.. i'm sure of it :D

    Kings birthday for me. Insipid.

    As an aside, we lost 4 games by less than a kick. If two of those went our way we'd still be in the race.

    That said we are not playing no where near where we should be and would have got knocked out in an elimination final.

    I am pleased with the progression of some of our kids, but can we please do something about delivery into our forward line. It's been our nemesis the past 3 seasons.

    Oh, and when there is 1 minute left in a game and we trail by less than a kick, how about coaching the team to forget about zone structures and pick up a bloody opponent.

    So by the end of the game you had some hope the season wasn't completely over?

    It is though very much dependent upon one's thoughts on happiness, and where one looks. I gave up decades ago thinking footy would bring me that joy. It's but an interest really these days. The passion got ground out.

    I thought we’d finish 6-8th this year which I guess we still could mathematically do. Just felt that missing  Brayshaw and and NQR Oliver would expose our lack of quality depth in the midfield.

    I was mildly optimistic when we beat both SA teams early on but was a tad worried how 1- dimensional we’d become with Petracca expected to do pretty much everything for us.

    The game against WCE in Perth was when I realised we were not a premiership threat. The week after against the Saints was just the usual players sticking their fingers in the dyke which broke the week after.

    Im pretty optimistic about 2025 though. We have enough reviews etc going on now that we might right the ship for a another shot at the crown.

    I remember the sinking feeling I had when Reid fended off Clarry and Trac in the same play. Just felt so telling when we tried so hard to get him, and how badly I wanted us to pull it off in the pre season.

    Caleb has been the brightest spark for us this year though so we did alright, but watching our pride and joy midfield getting decimated by the Eagles stung

    No, I meant he came good later in the season, meaning when he ran out onto the ground he looked like he wanted to be there.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
