When Kevin Keegan's career took off at Liverpool in the 70s he started getting a heap of sponsorship deals and was establishing himself as one of the sport's first marketable superstars. Liverpool manager would always quietly say to him:

"Just remember son, there's only one contract that matters. Your football contract"

Times have changed but the principle is the same and what Bill was saying that it's great that you're doing well off the field but don't forget why this is happening. It'd because you play football and do it well.

CP's brand is nothing without what the club has given him. He wouldn't even have half as many likes on Instagram if it weren't for what we have provided for him. I hope he hasn't forgotten this.

So in just under 2 days there has been about 1620 posts on the Petracca saga

Hands up those who have read every one of the posts in the last 2 days!  I've skimmed past the tl_dr as a case of have-to.  Keep it brief!

I'm still getting my head around the fact that we had 470 pages on the Hogan thread ... that's 11,750 posts (War & Peace anyone?)

I'm just about Petracca'd out

Hypothetical. Let’s say we saw N Daicos do this to the Pies, acting all Me Me Me. Leaks that he was a Dees fan growing up and is trying to torch Collingwood….. Ok bad example

But he’s not the only player who would do due diligence before re committing to the club.

Along with many other things, he doesn't want to do the hard slog again.

Is he ****ty with the club for the way they handled the injury on game day?

I have no doubt that the club doctors followed procedure on the day. I have no doubt they did all assessments and procedures before sending him back on the field.

I would imagine* that while he was off the field the doctors would have been going by what CP5 was telling them. Was the pain located to one spot? was the pain of the ribs more than the pain of the lung/ spleen? I have no doubt that the conducted other assessments, but mostly they would have been based on what CP5 was telling them. The docs dont have the luxury of scanners etc on the boundary/ in the rooms.

I possibly came off with a 10/10 pain, perhaps that subsided after a short time to a 4/10 pain, and the conversation of giving him pain relief came up. perhaps after this the pain became a 2/10 and CP5 was sure he could go on and play. I imagine he ran at 50%- 80%-100%, did squat jumps and whatever other warm up exercises required before saying he was right to go back on. I imagine that the docs are assessing him the entire time too.

I imagine after a short time, body contact, running at 110% the pain came back to being 10/10 and he came off the ground.

I think I read that it was a second round of scans at the hospital the the true extent of his injuries came to light.

Do i think the club/ docs wish they could have done things differently, yep

Do I think that CP5 wish he could have done things differently, yep.

There was a review of what happened and the AFL have ticked it off. Could CP5 request a review and make changes to the rules for injured players across the league to make change, yep he could, and he still might be the catalyst for this .

Has he been through a traumatic experience, absolutely, but reading through the [censored] tonight, it feels like he is more traumatised by his families reaction to his situation and that he "may not have made it" than he is to the injury itself.

Was the clubs reaction the same as his families?

Did they stay at the hospital/ follow up with visits/ calls/ texts? who knows, doesnt sound like they went above and beyond. Should they go above and beyond, [censored] yeah, blow smoke up the guys [censored], do whatever is needed to make him feel loved.

Do I believe that he would take a trade right now if it were possible? yep

Do I believe he will only go to a big Vic club? no, this is media hyperbole

Do I believe he is only thinking of his brand? nope, this is media hyperbole

Do I believe his injury and the reaction by the club to be the catalyst of a bunch of things that have happened this year, to his current feeling? yep

Do I believe that he loves the players/ coaches and club? yep

Do I believe there will be monumental change within the club structure/ coaches etc? yep

Do I believe that this will be sorted by the club and he will be in red and blue next year? yep

Do I believe that he will finish his career in the red and blue? depends what happens this off season

Do I believe this will impact our recruiting this year? yep

Will I love this club forever with or without CP5? [censored] oath

Go dees

* imagine, thats all I can do. im not an AFL player, involved in a club, or a doctor

I watched replay of the 2nd quarter of the Kings Birthday clash with the Pies.

Tracc returned to the ground after JVRs goal, and walked up to join the centre square trio of Max, Oliver and Pickett.

Max gave him the faintest low-five. No contact or reaction from the other 2.

It appeared no-one bothered to ask him how he was.

I would have thought Melbourne as his team is less polarising than some of the others. Look at the feedback Max gets in this space, he's widely respected.  I think whoever is advising him that his brand would increase with another team isn't serious you get a bump of maybe 30,000 which is spare change in influencer stakes. One episode of Masterchef would beat that.

Blues and Pies are out of the race,McCrae said as much today.

Clarko wanted Viney,so we trade Trac for Pick 2 and future first (they'll be bottom 2 at best next year)

Trac was pretty upset when Yze went to the Tigers,so it's their pick 6 (they won't trade pick 1) they get from the Suns for Rioli and their future first (bottom 2 next year)

We put it to Trac, you're playing for Richmond,North or us next year.

If he wants to break a 5 year contract,we decide where he plays next year, not him.

The fellas on Midweek tackle made an interesting few remarks relating to Trac threatening with an expose of the inner sanctum of the club and the playing group. ‘prepared to watch the world burn’ just sounds really bizarre like a deep seeded hatred almost.

If he was to reveal some secrets of the playing group, is that akin to an AFL death wish? I mean what club would want that type of player at all?

The media are like rabid dogs on this one.

Clearly a smouldering mess but they should back off and focus on the finals

Interesting that his agent doesn’t also manage his out of club appearances and third party deals (including social media). That part of his management was taken out of his contract with his agency.

Right now it's looking like his agent can't manage his way out of a paper bag.

Surely it's either an idle threat from Trac's end or merely journalistic licence from a footy media faced by a week of no footy, pre finals...

Just a hypothetical, but if we had beaten Brisbane, Port and GWS in those close games and playing finals next week, would this story have occurred? Or would it have just happened in October? Makes you wonder…

As someone who works in this space I would say that without his footy talent his cooking stuff is pretty average at best. He’s not particularly charismatic on camera and offers really nothing unique or compelling in those videos aside from “footy player who also cooks food.” Without the footy, “brand Petracca” is pretty bland.

And a lot of the recipes are from Recipe Tin Eats - a vastly more engaging brand - or his sponsors!

He spoke well on issues within the club and what needs to change but for me, he glossed over Christian also being an issue in this. The question was put to him on Christian’s potential selfishness and he gave a short answer and quickly brought it back to having a crack at the club.

I’m not saying he’s incorrect re the club, I just think his opinion of Christian maybe a little too high.

The club can't control what Petracca does but can make changes to fix the issues within. And hey, perhaps those issues contributed to an environment that led to Petracca acting in the way he is now.

Players that love the "party life" huh? Are people so blinded by loyalty they can't see what's going on here? I'm as frustrated as the next supporter about all this and think Petracca has gone about it in the wrong way and is harming himself and the club in the process but this has been brewing for a long time and the club is to blame for not addressing the issues! Supporters who blindly follow the club and let the club leaders get away with it out of misguided loyalty are a big part of the problem too.

If he's desperate to leave then he can go to Richmond, North or West Coast.

No other club comes close unless they offer up star players which is definitely not going to happen now with this situation. He's shot himself in the foot to a degree by the way he's gone about it.

Damien Barrett:

Of the remaining five years of Petracca's contract with Melbourne, his annual wage will peak at $1.7 million a year, and not fall below $1.2 million a year

Me:

I doubt any club will take that on,especially with all his baggage,it's just not worth it.

It’s absolutely crazy how much legs this story has got. If we break it down to just facts, we know

1) It was reported on the 12/08 that he was disgruntled with the club and its direction. Mail goes around that he’s also concerned about his brand.

2) He returned to the club on the 19/08 and presented at a players meeting and it was a positive thing for Trac. It seemed that some bridges were being repaired.

3) 23/08 Trac was supposed to do an interview with 7 but it was pulled (supposedly on Trac’s side)

4) 26/08 it’s reported that at Trac’s exit meeting he tells Goodwin that he wants to go to another club but he has not formally requested a trade.

Fascinating to see who will speak next.

When is Gawn’s radio spot or did that finish at season’s end?

I was listening to SEN on the way home from work tonight, Daniel Hoyne was on and was asked about Petracca. Hoyne said that statistically he was the 4th highest ranked footballer this season just before his injury on Kings Birthday. Also that since 2020 he had never been out of the top 10 in the Champion Data player rankings.

Whilst there is a place for statistical analysis I don't treat it as gospel and prefer to trust my naked eye. Last time I saw Petracca play live was the Carlton v Melbourne game in May where he kicked 5 goals and nearly dragged Melbourne to snatch a win pretty much by himself. Was incredible to watch.

Just pointing that out to those that are denigrating Tracc the footballer right now because they are upset about this situation.

Hoping that MFC and he can sit down and sort something out that leaves both sides better off than sniping at each other via the media. Pots and pans don't need to fly across the kitchen in a breakup.

That Carlton game was one of his best outside the GF. There is no denying it. But those games were few and far

between. He lacked lots of consistency and would have games where he just wasn’t effective - we tend to overlook those as well.

Still, not many players have the ability to turn a game… he just appears to pick and chose when that happens. Maybe there in lies the problem ?

I cut a lot of Footy Stories in the 80’s and 90’s for ABC News with 2-3 different journalists, and we would be working flat out most of the time to get them finished.
I just want to say, i have never come across a story like this one. This has the potential to get really nasty on quite a few levels

I have no idea how it’s going to end, usually you can see the end game.
But not this one.
