I believe that losing Brayshaw was a significant factor in our loss to Collingwood, but even if we had beaten them, beating GWS in the prelim was no given. They only lost to the Pies because of a large number of shocking pro-Collingwood umpiring calls in the last quarter. We would not have enjoyed the same armchair ride from the umps. The Giants ball movement and superior disposal efficiency would have exposed us.

Which makes me think of the weekend just past when McRae complains about the non-fifty which apparently cost them the game. Collingwood won so many games by a goal or less over the past 18 odd months and never once has he come out and said how lucky they were to win a game when clearly they got the run of it with the umpires. He's a dog, McRae. The AFL should send him a please explain and fine him.

I'll throw in an extremely poor analogy but it's like he wants to stir up the Collingwood mor**s even more just like Trump did to get the ridiculous riots upon the White House.

Goodwin has one more chance next year to turn it around imv.

We built a list to play a brand of footy that won us a flag. And much of that core had certain attributes suited to the type of game we wanted to play. We were all happy about the flag and celebrated it, Goody will forever be thanked and appreciated for that. However, the AFL is a forward moving beast and we can't continue to live in the past and especially not in the space of 'our list is good enough if we don't get injuries'. That won't cut it so I think supporters need to drop that line of thinking.

It's clear that whilst that brand of footy keeps you competitive in a finals environment, it's not sustainable throughout an entire home and away campaign and certainly not against sides who play a more Offensively-minded, risk taking brand of footy when finals-like nerves and pressure are not there.

I think our recalibration has been slow and our list management to date has been poor and if calls for an end of year review are true, I think it'll be welcome.

This year has been a shocker on many fronts but I remain bullish about where we can be next year like many. As longgggg as the club make some difficult calls over the off-season.

Without having a dig at the die-hards on here who would refuse to entertain a trade of any sort involving one of our premiership players, I think it might be needed if we're going to see serious improvement and evolution to this side.

As others have pointed out, the AFL is a competition that is embedded in the entertainment industry and if we want to continue to 'grow' our club and inch closer to a 'big' club like many hoped post Grand Final, we're going to need to seriously look at how we want to play as a side. 16,000 and 17,000 supporters to home games in consecutive weeks is reflective of the type of football we play. It is boring as bat-[censored] and whilst some supporters might be happy with our game against Port, I see it as nothing more than a desperate damage control effort from Goody and co.

Nobody wants to watch that [censored] and I can almost guarantee that our high-end kids and stars don't want to play in games like that. Petracca has said as much publicly.

Unfortunately, this is where we see ourselves after investing so heavily in players with attributes that suited a game-plan that Goody believed would stand the test of time. And from this, the demonlanders who delve into stats come up with all sorts of statistics that will justify their views about why we're performing the way we are.

I've said it all before but it's down to list imbalance completely and wholly. With a game-plan now in transition and some key personnel out, all is being revealed and the cracks that have been there for so long are now gaping holes.

Posters can hold me to this, but I sense we will lose next week by 50+ given what I've outlined above. Gold Coast are a highly skilled side and I think we got ourselves up for some faux 'pride back in the jumper' type of stuff against Port. I think our levels of enthusiasm and interest are dropping off big time.

Hard calls need to be made in the off-season, it can't come quickly enough and we need a serious look at how we want to grow this club going forward. I think we're on the edge of needing to move a Fritsch, Viney, Oliver (perhaps not based off of this year's form) on for some fresh air, youth, enthusiasm, new life. I think supporters need to take a long-term view of this club.

Footy should be fun. For players and supporters alike. You want to come and watch exciting football. The MFC are anything but that and we haven't seen it since the 21 finals series which should tell us all something.

I still think we have a capable core with some serious weapons but we absolutely need a serious change up over the off-season with an injection of skill, composure and a new found love of actually playing the game. Goodwin has got to get the memo that spitting out the same words at pressers and to the players is just soul destroying and just sucks all the life out of the supporters and players.

We need to reshuffle our coaches/ bring a couple of fresh voices and ideas in. We need another injection of high end talent from the draft that will help inspire our older stars just as Windsor and Tholstrup have done at times this year. We need to address our game-plan and list imbalances and explore the options of off-loading an experienced player for a player that will help correct some of our execution downfalls. A courageous but necessary inquiry if you ask me.

All is not lost.

But this joint needs a whack around the ears. Otherwise we are at risk of more than just missing out again next year. We'll be at risk of stars wanting to leave, supporters dropping off even more which will have huge implications for any growth model we've set. Still without a home base whilst every other club seems to be upgrading the million doller facilities they've had for years. We will be left behind, make no mistake.

If supporters think this is hyperbole, you're living on planet X.

The competition is constantly evolving and we better get with the picture next year or watch this space.

Thank you, where have you been? Healthy debate, posting alternative opinions without being insulting to the coach and the team. Some stuff I agree with, some not, some ideas with a different perspective. Really some others could take a clue from your etiquette. BTW for those that reckon I or those like me are clueless fan people who love the coach no matter what, you are being insulting and you lack basic comprehension skills. I am always looking for evidence, in everything that has happened I see a coach that has tried stuff, some stuff works some doesn’t. Obviously things aren’t perfect and some things need to change, but on the evidence available I think Goodwin has the ability and the credits to drive that change and improvement. Ipso facto he is the man.

How have the Cats & Scott continue to remain in a position to challenge and only missed finals twice since 2011 and not bottomed out, it’s in their ability to trade in quality experience players who help improve their list inc attracting free agents, something we have failed to do since winning the flag. So who’s responsible for this Goodwin? List management? Or both?

They have unique advantages that clubs like us do not have.

The obvious one being the 'lifestyle' card they can play to attract trades and free agents which has worked a treat for them, Bailey Smith being another who will likely join to get out of the Melbourne footy bubble.

They've also had Wells as their list manager for an eternity although he's now head of recruitment I believe. He's been without doubt the most successful and best list/recruitment manager over the past 20 years, consistently nailing picks both in the ND and RD.

They have eyes all over leagues across the Bellarine Peninsula which is basically their own recruiting 'zone' or 'academy'. I mean, they plucked Tom Stewart from the clouds.

They have an genuine home-ground advantage compared to us whenever they play their which is a huge reason they continue to win so many h/a games. Compare their home-ground advantage to us, it's chalk and cheese.

Those four points alone have given them a huge advantage, tie that in with the types of leaders they had during their premiership years, Selwood alone, the culture they have built and maintained, Chris Scott as a coach and it's no wonder they've been able to 'overcome' the normal 'rebuild' that most clubs go through post flag years.

Nowhere near enough! Exhibit A failed forward. Harrison Petty, not his fault though. Blame is on Coaching Dept!

Another good post, even though I don’t agree with all of it.

One thing that I’m seeing a lot of is the notion that we were “boring” on the weekend and that Goodwin’s at fault for having us play that way.

I didn’t see it that way at all. I didn’t see us trying to move the ball slowly, backwards/sideways, etc. What I saw was a side trying to spread, and trying to move the ball quickly enough to generate scoring shots, but failing. We consistently missed kicks/handballs (side bar - how often do we handball to or behind a runner instead of in front of them?) and didn’t appear to have the legs to run out the game.

I also don’t buy that Goodwin’s pressers have a draining impact on the players. I reckon they have next to zero impact on the players. The (limited) behind the scenes content we get from the club shows us he’s a different person internally as compared to in the media/externally.

His pressers certainly have drained me so much i cant watch them anymore

They make me grind my teeth

The same could be said of the people that consistently state the opposing view.

Irony….

Football, like life is not black and white. He’s a good catch. A premiership coach. Is he without fault? No. Should we be reviewing his method and the methods of his footy department? Yes. Is our predicament this year all on his shoulders? No, but he is responsible for some of it.

This last bit should go on the contracts thread, BUT I will say it here anyway, our rather big problem is our top heavy contracts. We are nowhere with a lot of players as we just can’t offer them the going rate. It has killed our depth and ability to recruit. That’s not on Goody in my books.

That’s your assessment of the situation based on what, The bonus contracts that have secured most of our stars and players recently.
You are stating we have very limited left now to pay any new players say next year or can’t recruit an A grade mid next season.
How many of our players are not going to be retained or are to retire ? Others to be delisted  ? AND extra in the total to pay is how much.?  Also most of our players are retained and Angus payment is not affecting our Cash for playing  players.
We have not found this situation before and it isn’t likely that it’s the case. It’s just your opinion on the list payment situation.

Id be interested in sny other D/Lers opinion on this matter as I believe we are mostly very balanced in this aspect of the Club. Opinions??

Agree and see my post on the Goody forum for a similar post different but same message and fears for the Club if no CHANGE

Best not read it then? 🤷

The thread is called “GOODWIN IS THE MAN” ffs

The purpose of the thread is to praise our coach.

The OP created it PURELY as an alternative to the thread called “Time To Go Goody” the very title of which makes the OP feel sick, and he’s clearly not alone there.

is it too much to ask folks to take their opposing views to a relevant thread? God knows, there’s plenty from which to choose.

Anyways thanks for ruining Demonland for some of us. Way to go.

Roller coaster, lots of ups and downs.

The most damning points here:

> Finish second last after making it to a PF

> 2020 the huge preseason and promise to be better (does anyone remember the documentary the club released). We lost our finals chance by performing awfully against two bottom 6 teams, Freo and Sydney. Had we won just one of those games we could've played finals. Win both as we should've and top 5 position was all but certain.

> Not being able to win even one final three years removed from the premiership, we lost all those games in a similar fashion. Great defence, not putting a score when commanding in those games, let the opposition come back in the last quarter.

Bit tough to blame the coach for abysmal skill execution which was primarily the cause of some finals losses

If he was singularly responsible for the composition of our list that would be more reasonable - but I don’t think he is

Our list needs an injection of fresh blood and lots of it - importantly we need players that can get speed on the ball, are creative and excellent kicks

Easier said than done and they are hard to acquire but there is the challenge for our FD

Like all monotonous behaviour. It just sooooo boring…. 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

It’s no wonder people stop reading/posting on here.

There’s simply no escaping it. I should be able to open a thread called “Goodwin is the Man” without having to read the same old sadsacks with their same old BS stemming from their same old insecurities stemming from their same old shortcomings.

It’s absolutely ruining what was an awesome site.

If I should suddenly disappear from DL, this would be the reason right here, which is sad coz there’s sooooo much to love about DL. But it’s got to a point where I simply can’t avoid it. I give the GameDay and postgame threads a wide berth, along with various other threads that I feel will be potentially upsetting, but they invade every single thread. It’s super unfair. Who needs the angst?!

End of rant.

You’ll be right at home with your fellow-sadsacks in no time. And don’t worry about anyone upsetting you, there’ll soon be nobody like me on this site. Just a handful of grumpy old curmudgeons getting their rulers out.

Completely agree with this.

We regularly went corridor, particularly in the first half, and either stuffed the kicks or our forwards failed to get the job done inside 50.

These failures may have resulted in less corridor use in the second half, where we reverted to safer ball movement up the line.

But the central ball movement definitely got us some scores in the first half.

I am not buying into the doom and gloom......yet. If the pattern continues downwards in 2025 I will re-assess.

I understand the feelings though, but I put it down mostly to PTSD from our horror years before Roos came onboard and righted the ship.

It has not been a great year, but considering we are technically only 2 games and percentage out of the 8 after a horror run of injuries shows how even a competition it has been this year. With such a tight race for finals, teams need to be having some luck with injuries and good stretches of form and we have neither for the season.

I can't name a single team this year that hasn't at some point been horribly out of form for several games.

At least we didn't win in 2021 and instantly drop out of the 8 like Collingwood this year. Imagine being a Carlton supporter, they arguable have had the same level of talent (if not more) than us and continue to underperform every year. St Kilda fans must be just about the most frustrated set of supporters in the AFL. Fremantle have never won the premiership. I would say something about Gold Coast supporters, but I have never met any.

Goodwin has done a great job of keeping us competative over the years through several challenges, even winning us a cup in the process.

Our drafting has been A+

Our talent development has been A+

Our talent retention has been (outside of LJ) A+

Have a look at clubs like Gold Coast, for most of their existance they have basically been a development squad for other clubs. The fact that our players constantly keep re-signing is a sign to be that they enjoy being at the club and subsiquently respect and enjoy playing for Goodwin.

What we need to improve, more than anything is our trading.

We will have an easier draw for 2025, a longer pre-season and time to do surgeries etc, a good draft hand this year, hopefully no more off field antics and distractions and plenty of time to analyse opposition teams and game plans.

Simon Goodwin is the best placed person to attempt to right the ship next year. If we continue downward then I guess we start the conversation as to whether he is the best person for a re-build.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
