He has the 3rd highest winning percentage of any melbourne coach to coach 200 or more games.

He’s won a flag plus 2 finals in 2018, he’s 2 straight sets exits and since then has won 11 games in 24 & be lucky to win 8, that’s going backwards not to mention suspect culture issues and by his own admission the handling of trac & Oliver, he’s talking rebuild yet the last 3 premiers are contending, list mgt may not be he’s entire fault but look at how he handled Grundy saying his much thru value him then dumping him! Too much flip flop

Under any reasonable pressure from an oppo over more than about one or two quarters or so (at approx AFL average pressure rating) this team is incapable of winning most of the time. Some people will scoff at the membership numbers dropping because there's often a need to simplify things only to the performance on the footy field. Members are the lifeblood of any football club and if membership drops dramatically in a single year then that is a fail when the board goes through their KPIs.

The on field stuff is important but whether people like it or not the off field stuff matters too.

I am a bit like you layzie in that I am still undecided on Goodwin. But I am not like others thinking Goodwin will automatically be the coach next year because he has a contract. We are already struggling to get sponsors, membership has dropped and will drop further if there isn’t much hope. Goodwin’s job is very much on the line in my opinion for the rest of this season.

The difference is Goodwin has wasted a very talented list. 1 Premiership when we should of had 2 or 3.

2017 was a disaster for the Club. 2019 & 2020 were totally wasted. Ditto 2022. 2023 he was unlucky.

It's a complex situation we're in right now ANG13. I know they always are but ours is not an easy one.

Questions over the coaching, coaching staff, playing list, player leadership on field, fitness program etc. There isn't one area that is sound right now and couldn't use improvement. Not to mention we already had a 'big review' last year that none of us are really sure what it uncovered. Then there's the off field stuff like the membership drop off and then the fact that we can't really do or plan anything until the new CEO comes in.

It really feels like a holding pattern and our hands are tied.

It's bizarre isn't it? People don't respect our drought breaking, premiership coach

I have no problem with people having a go at him or wanting change/pointing out the very obvious issues etc

But show him some respect and acknowledge the good he has done

Exactly. Unless you're in a coterie group or have some special connection to the club, you really only hear from the coach through website puff pieces and the press conferences. And, on one glorious occasion, in a self-filmed video involving red wine and pasta.

Yes, press conferences are strange and awkward and sometimes punctuated by the most idiotic questions, but they're not completely useless. And, whether you think they're an absolute waste of time or not, they're there (at least in part) for fans.

I think you can get a fair bit out of them.

For example, Goodwin refuses to resort to ludicrous conspiracies or woe-is-me nonsense like many of his contemporaries. For the most part, I think we should admire him for this. A coach should never be satisfied with "The opposition was just too good", but they should never fall into the trap of "We were, once again, the better team, but X, Y and Z conspired against us."

And on the other side of the coin, as others have said hundreds of times, he's obsessed with corporate cliches that occassionally verge on New Age [censored], as corporate cliches so often tend to do.

If that's what he needs to do to avoid giving away trade secrets or to avoid making harsh public statements about individual players (which just isn't his style), so be it. But when the whole thing is just a string of platitudes and buzzwords, it's so deflating. Worse when there's not even any internal consistency - are we about to turn the corner with this group or are we still finetuning the 'process' that will lead to 'outcomes'?

Of course Lyon had a talented list but you totally ignore the completely wasted years & failures under Goodwin.

Goody arguably had the best defence, best midfield & best ruck in the league for 4 years.

You also ignore the fact that the problems that surfaced in 2022 are still obvious in 2025.

The problem is costing us in rebuild time and $$$.

We are going backwards or marking time & among the supporters I know (50 or so) many have lost hope & won't attend games or upgrade memberships until Goodwin goes.

Why do people say this like winning flags is easy. It drives me nuts.

How many have Brisbane won recently despite being a top team for years? 1.

How many have Geelong won recently despite being a top team most years? 1.

How many times has Sydney won from their last 5 times playing in that the GF? 0.

How did Collingwood go after winning in 2023? Didn't make finals.

Because every now and again you get someone like Ross Lyon who sticks it up the AFL about things everyone is thinking but most of us don’t have the platform and those that do are too scared.

I know it's more likely Simon stays next year than goes (due to his contract) and the club isn't going to decide his future on 7 games (unless it's obvious that he's lost the players).

However I don't think it's unreasonable to put a bit of pressure on him to perform these last 7 weeks with a short injury list and the fact that he's 10-21 since the infamous Harley Reid game last year when our season fell off the rails from seemingly nowhere, after a promising 6-2 start to 2024.

We should be aiming for the following from rounds 18-24.

1) 3-1 against North, Carlton, St Kilda and West Coast.

2) one win against the contenders in Dogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood.

3) in the two losses to the above contenders I want to see us take one of those sides to time on in the last quarter, per the Kings B'day loss.

I know the above goals are probably unlikely to happen, but it's time the coach, his assistants and playing group start to put an extended period of winning football together, with consistent 3 to 4 quarters a game week in week out, because right now the gap between our best and worst is horrifying and the effort from 1 quarter to the next is bipolar.

We need to finish 2025 with confidence and have the players and supporters feeling good again about their club again. Can you imagine going into 2026 with a 1-11 record since the Sydney win with the "same old" in charge.

I’ve been on here for 20+ years and have yet to see some posters actually post anything positive.

It’s just how life is, Goodwin is absolutely on thin ice and I dare say lose to North and Carlton over the next fortnight and the decision may be made.

But posters coming on here and posting absolute rubbish does no good and actually damages their credibility.

Whether as a poster you’re in the Keep Goodwin, sack Goodwin or starting to sway camp that’s fine we all have different views but provide balanced arguments with some facts, general rants are pointless.

Player A must have photos of Goodwin

I could go on, we’re in our current predicament for a number of reasons some within our control and some outside our control. Personally I’m not over the moon with the current situation, however I have seen positive things within our system and ball movement, which can click for a sustained period.

There are many negatives too and things are never as good or as bad as they seem. Some big decisions need to be made within the football department and with the list. Big calls on some Premiership heroes are required and Goodwin needs to be involved in making those calls which may impact long term relationships but that’s what you have to do if you want to keep your job and change the list.

Whatever occurs Demonland will remain with its posters firing shots at the coach, players and the club it’s how they’re wired

Anyway 7 games for our season to go and I’ll see how that pans out

Ok then.

Was our list in 2022 and 2023 as a whole better than Richmond’s in 2017-2020 or Hawthorn’s 2013-2015.

Short answer is No! We had a gun back line and midfield and a bits and pieces forward line.

We did well to get the jump on the comp in 2021 but we were very quickly figured out in 2022 onwards.
