For those interested, here is Simon Goodwin's latest press conference.

Make of it what you will. He believes he is confident things can be turned around. Unfortunately, as the losses mount, time will be against him.

    I thought that was good. He sounds confident

    Yes, that's true.

    Simon Goodwin seems confident and steadfast.

    I just hope he isn't delusional.

    There were a lot of Melbourne players pointing fingers and minding grass against Essendon. That sort of weak effort should not acceptable.

    Yeah I’m in the same boat. I want to believe this is the (horrific) “growing pains” of a new gameplan that we can see glimpses of occasionally.

    But then I go back to the fact that so many of the players don’t seem to be giving much effort...which can’t be explained away by “growing pains.”

    Yeah… If I’ve learned anything over the last few years, it’s that anytime someone from the club says something is the ‘best ever’, I immediately know there’s issues with that thing.

    The issues for Simon Goodwin to solve are far deeper than just improving the team and getting a few wins under the belt. For starters the lack of efficiency inside 50 coupled with a poor forward line remains unsolved after 3 years or so. How does he suddenly solve that dilemma? And that's only one of a number of key issues. Don't think so my son. That's too big for you now. Move on and quit while you're ahead. Time for change.

    I felt buoyed when I heard him speak today but I've also seen our last five games. Four of which were extraordinarily bad.

    Same. I felt buoyed the last few weeks when he looked so confident, and spoke of just a few small thing turning for the tide to change.

    But the things he's saying are really basic. Is it all really in the defence? It's part of it, sure, but really? And what's this talk of how it's apparent we're down on pressure lol. How would that not be obvious in watching our games or even reading up on stats post game?

    But yeah, I feel I am getting sucked into the buoyancy. Again. lol

    He does seem more preoccupied with owning territory...than the ball. It's his shtick ;)

    Goody has definitely got better at press conferences. He doesn't scratch his leg obsessively anymore and he does sound confident

    trouble is saying it and the players hearing it are 2 totally different things

    looks to me like the messaging just isn't getting through anymore. I know change doesn't happen overnight, but this game plan was worked on last year and this pre season. If it hasn't come together at this stage, the likelihood of everything clicking is far less.

    Time for change

    Huge difference is what happened after that, with Brown and McDonald being able to either mark or make a contest of it, letting the others get to work.

    From what I can see, the Yze approach added another string to the bow, I don't think it was a whole new bow. Could be wrong.

    Other way round, Buckley was responding to Lewis.

    Brown then added his comments about the difference between clearance under pressure or not, and that it's the latter that counts.

    Not enough time.

    And there's a limit to what you can do with changing a game plan without there being a real change in the people who have to implement it, i.e., the list. You want more outside run? You don't try and turn your inside bulls into outside runners, you bring outside runners into the club.

    The draftees we've got in will help accelerate the process, but it's going to be a rough year.

    Buckley also said it looks a coaching instruction to kick it long to i50 from a clearance. That makes sense as not all players would bomb it long all the time!

    If so its no surprise players are confused: do they 'use the space' and HB ala Yze methond or do they kick long i50.

    Jones, Radford and Goodwin need get their message clear. It is no wonder we scored 1 pt from 16 clearances on Saturday

    They can kick long but for God's sake at least kick long to a teammates advantage! And coach to create space in the forward 50 for the forwards to work in. Kicking it long on top of a forwards head who is wrestling with his opponent is never gonna succeed.

    I agree it wasn't another string not a new bow. The context of the Lewis comment was Yze added another way to move the ball out of CB clearances. Implemented beautifully in the 3rd qtr of the 2021 GF.

    Somehow we have lost that string that Yze added.

    Good, professional teams are ruthless.

    Read today about the Denver Nuggets sacking of their 18 year title winning coach and their

    Basically their relationship was toxic and split the team and staff into two. The owner sacked both so no one camp would be seen as a winner.

    This is just one relationship between 2 people and it fractured the whole team made the place miserable.

    Shows how delicate a teams morale can be and the numerous relationships etc that can influence an organisations culture.

    Kicking long and high would make sense if it was Gawn, May, or maybe Lever forward as he reads the flight so well.

    • NON-MFC: Round 09

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
