Yes we can if we get our list shuffle/management right. Couple of more mids needed or half backs to throw Rivers and Mcvee in there permanently.

For what it’s worth, I think we can, too. But it will need smart, effective recruitment and some better ideas for game days, plan Bs and 4quarters of consistent footy each and every game. A reliable gameplay again. Consistency. We need a real deep dive on the off season, not a gloss-over because the big part of this is we need to attack real talent to plug holes immediately and that will require convincing them that we’re not a rabble on the downward slide. Dan Houston etc will want success.

Just pathetic, I know we jump on Goodwin but tonight showed he’s lost the players, playing with no heart, the selection is unfair, continues to play out of form players. He’s finished at our club, he has lost the players, reckon we should go get a young gun coach or bring in Nathan Buckley. 

Teams that have pride don't give up 35 scoring shots to 14. I wonder when the Pies last waved the white flag like that?

Yeah it's because of that mean Maynard. Yeah poor Oliver's had a bad run. Oh but we get stiffed by the umpires. And our crowd just doesn't make enough noise so how can we expect the players to be competitive?

If Oliver’s hand is busted I’d be getting him in for surgery this week then get him ready for a huge off season (training that is).

Anyone else needing surgery, straight in this week. Time put the cue in the rack. Imagine finishing 6th last, we get pick 6 and the easiest possible fixture for next year. Im not saying we tank, I’m just saying time focus on 2025

I agree, we've regressed badly since his departure in the fitness dept.  Most teams have gone past us and we rarely play out four quarters now.

Not a great start for the 2025 tilt, but plenty of time to get into it.

Woewodin, Kolstrup and Moniz-Wakefield out of their depth tonight (as were several experienced teammates).

Zero selection pressure from Casey.

So much for our much-heralded dynasty.

The chickens of what has clearly been inadequate list management have come home to roost.

The running theme in our poor performances this year has been our uncompetitiveness in the midfield. We weren't to know what was going to happen with Gus, but as soon as that happened, we had insufficient depth to cover. It only got worse once it became clear that Oliver was nowhere near what we need him to be.

The sooner we accept that our midfield is the core of all of our problems, the better.

We can add to this a fitness program that has failed us, too. Being completely outworked by a side off a 5-day break at this time of year, when we're supposed to be running over the ground, is all the proof we need. Whatever we're doing isn't working. 

So much of what made us good for three years has evaporated this year. For three and a bit years I had confidence that, even when down in general play, we could turn games around. I had confidence that we could hold up behind the ball. I had confidence that we'd see consistent effort most quarters and most weeks. Sadly, I've lost a lot of that confidence.

The future doesn't have to be as bleak as this season though. We now have a chance this off-season to address the problems that are staring us in the face. If we can get the off-season right, there's plenty to work with for 2025. But we're not good enough to get it wrong. And the chance for redemption in 2025 shouldn't be offered to everyone. Too many mistakes in list management and line coaching mean that some are going to have to depart and fresh faces/voices will be needed.

Unsurprising result. So many players should hardly even be out there through injury and what not. Will be interesting to get to the end of season and see how many get sent in for surgery.

Great to see players like Tholstrup getting a taste of midfield, but run up against a team of A-graders in Bont, Libba, Treloar etc. results were predictable. Sure, play the kids, but don't expect to win too many matches, especially against in-form sides.

Harsh on Turner and Howes I think. Also incredibly early to be calling Kentfied a swing and miss, he's played what, 7 games at Casey?

Nothing compromised at all about that flag. If anything, the compromise was against us because we had to win our first two home finals at neutral venues. You want to know a compromise? Collingwood playing at their home ground against an interstate team on grand final day.

What was more interesting was giving up picks 27 & 35 to move up 3 places and get the Kolt. Darcy Wilson went at our original pick. 
We could have traded those picks into this years draft and put ourselves into a much better position.

Some of you need to understand where the Dogs are right now. Beat Carlton, the Cats by 47 at Taxpayer Park, then Sydney by 39 at the SCG.

We are without Brayshaw, Trac and a fully fit Olly and Gawn and are rebuilding on the run. And that was no capitulation. We were outclassed but it was fought out and we upped our pressure in the second half. 

 

A few positives from tonight. Thought Rivers gradually worked his way into it, but as someone said earlier, too much for him to carry it by himself. Also thought it was Bowey's best game for the year. Also Turner - blown out of it when he first came on, but got better as the game wore on. Same to some extent for AMW, felt he improved as the game wore on and was far from our worst.

Hawthorn 20.13.133 def. Collingwood 9.13.67. Collingwood completely annihilated all game.

I mean, the Dogs a month ago lost to Port by 48, 27 scoring shots to 14, with a goalless first quarter.

Most sides this year have had a game where they've been flogged. Our problem is we've had five (Fremantle twice, West Coast, Collingwood, and tonight).

Knowing this club if  we get pick 6 we'll give it to Port for a 28 yr old Dan Houston instead of going to the draft. What a waste that would  be trading a high pick for a guy that might only have 3-4 years left .

I generally like trading up- but it has to be at reasonable cost. That one felt like overs. We were the only ones to travel and meet his family. Reasonable chance he would have been there at our original pick. 

Critiques of Tholstrup are ridiculous. He's a first year player having a crack. It will come with a bit more experience and a calmer head.
