add also, in the last decade or so: crom, bears, filth, peptides...

every club goes through various issues with player attention / attraction

Crows were keen last year?

Send him there for pick 4.

Looks like you were right.

However after a lifetime supporting this club, given what I have invested emotionally,  I will never give up on them, even if Clarry, my favourite player leaves and anyone else for that matter.

I have made my bed with the Dees and I will lie in it forever.

Nup

if Clarry goes I’m done, been a member since 89, the Petracca, Oliver & Kozzie rumblings will be enough

Im disappointed beyond words to see what is happening to the club three years after a premiership

Yet it would save face with the members. Not sure which is more valuable right now.

It is possible (regardless of how many on here couldn’t possibly believe so) that maximising his trade value isn’t the club’s primary objective and moving on from him in ‘as quiet a way as is possible’ in fact is.

Oliver should be thanking Melbourne and Max for all the c r a p he has put The team through and the support he has been provided!
Great footballer, not sure of his other capabilities!

While you are correct in identifying our help so far let’s not start a bake on Clarry like some did with Trac.

Both are with Max JV Maysie and Lever our greatest players generational in fact that have and will be recognised as the champs of this era ( however it remains or not) who bought to us many hours of enjoyment and great footy.

They put the fear of losing  into the opposition and still will hopefully head our 2025 challenge for a season that no one yet can really predict what may happen.

If we were to lose Clarry then play hardball and extract some players ie SDK plus a runner/ half forward goal kicker to help our list or 2 top draft picks as adequate compensation they did for Jeremy Cameron.

How do you conclude that ?? What indications are there for that assumption?

Quote on the Desk calendar today

”There is no security on this earth ;
there is only Opportunity.

Douglas Macarthur.

Seems to sit well with what Chris Fagan told his players mid season, “ If you’re skating in thin ice you may as well dance”

Be bold, Be brave.

Oliver + for DeKonning and Brad Close

Petracca + for Jai Newcombe and Weddle

( sure CP mightn’t want to go to the Hawks, but it’s an example of a trade that would IMO enhance our fortunes for next year)

IN : 4 clear best 22 players

OUT : 2 MFC all time champions who may or may not ever get back to their best.

OUT: Potentially, all disharmony within the playing group.

He's contracted. If he wants to go to the Cats, and we decide we'll let him go, then it needs to be a bloody good deal. We hold all the leverage.

I'd be asking for Holmes and a top 10 pick at minimum. Don't give a [censored] how they get the top 10 pick, not our problem. That's the bargain basement price. And we pay $0 of his million dollar salary too.

You want a generational midfielder, you pay the price.

I can't stand Goodwin, and I have huge issues with Pert and Roffey, I'm on the record there. But the club can't be blamed for Oliver's immaturity, extraneous strings pulling at Petracca and ANB has legitimate reasons to go back to SA. I completely disagree with your definitive statement on ANB; and until you've been in a situation like that there's no point projecting.

Whilst I somewhat agree with your point around the environment being subpar, the whataboutism is a completely hypothetical point.

Suggest you unsubscribe to 'Land then. There are more projectors here than at the Cannes Film Festival.

If you managed to survive the Barry Prendergast years I’m sure you’ll make it through this!

If the MFC are Happy for Oliver to “Look Around…See what’s out there…”

My take is that they have had enough of The High Maintenance…

For who?

Are we clearing cap for a big name? Because right now it seems we can't attract a cockroach to our club, let alone a big name player.

The return from a Clarry trade will not necessarily come this year. Dumping money out of the cap provides flexibility to move other salaries forward and space to recruit other players in the future.

Hawthorn let Mitchell and O'Meara go and now have the cap space to bring in Barrass and Battle. Effectively I would argue they have swapped Mitchell and O'Meara for Barrass and Battle.

The big name might be Zac Butters in 2026 or Harley Reid in 2027.

Geelong may not be able to satisfy us but now that other clubs know he's gettable there could be other suitors

Ironic then, considering they are keeping Trac...

Seems that way

Time for the Empire to strike back.

Petracca and Oliver want out. That must net us 4 first rounders.See ya later.

Well I didn’t ’conclude’ that, I said it was possible.

14 minutes ago, 58er said:

What indications are there for that assumption?

I said it was ‘possible’ because;

- it seemed unusual that Geelong would be speaking to him with the limited trade assets they have IF they didn’t think Melbourne would be open to selling him on the cheap

- he is taking up an enormous chunk of our salary cap for a very long time so if the FD don’t believe he will get back to his best and give us maximum value for that investment then it is reasonable to assume they’d at least explore options to move him on

- the club could reasonably assume that if we were seen to be rushing him out the door in a ‘fire sale’, our members would be livid (akin to Filth members when Grundy and Treloar went) so influecing the narrative to make the decision look more out of our control has benefits

at the end of the day no one is bigger than the club, Jezza, Buddy, Barassi, Ablett etc all left to go elsewhere and their clubs were just fine.  as long as we get remunerated accordingly, life ill go on and the Dees will be just fine.

If Clarry wants out - so be it.  there are obvious issues.  2 good players, 1 good player and great pick.  as long as we are compensated.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
