In that same segment Edmund said that we’re not necessarily giving up on Houston and that we’d consider trading two first rounders…

This is accurate.

I don’t think we’ll get him but we are loitering.

Because he's not interested in coming to us, or because it's unlikely we will meet Port's demands in a trade?

I wonder how much Port will soften now that he's all but requested a trade.

They would think we would finish below Carlton next year, making our F1 more appealing, and if we can get another 1st rounder via Brisbane or by packaging up the pick we get for ANB, we might be getting closer to the mark.

Over a bbq beer on Saturday,  it was suggested to me that perhaps the only way Houston gets to MFC is

Houston and Power future pick say 2025 future 2nd round

Sparrow and MFC 2025 future 1st round.

My reply … Sparrow not going anywhere so it’s back to the think tank

I think we did lose a bit of credibility with Houston both on and off the field. The delay due to the Petracca rubbish hurt us as this deal should have a bow on it already. (Subject to us finding 2 1st round picks)

When his management fielded additional offers from other clubs they went pretty hard and have offered more money and ‘better finals prospects’. Carlton is now his preferred destination.

The caveat is, we have cap space and draft collateral, where Carlton currently does not. We are staying in conversations as a result. Carlton need to potentially shed more salary and find picks.

Ok. we keep 5 no matter what … but try to get Lions 1st pick (live “18”) by packaging up 25 (from Crows) and 37 and 61.  Offer our MFC future 1st and this pick “18” to Port for Houston.  That’s better than Blues likely offer.

That's a ridiculously lopsided trade in our favour. If we could do Houston for a future and Sparrow I would 100% pull the trigger.

Hopefully we are loitering purely to push the price higher for Carlton

Really hope we can land him somehow. Obviously the ideal scenario would have us retain pick 5 but I wouldn't mind us splitting that pick to get the trade capital and still retain a mid first round selection.

Best scenario: Future 1st and Brisbane's pick 18 (by trading 25, 45, 50)

Alternative: split 5 for Richmond's 9, 13 (via baker) and future 2nd.

Trade 13 and pick 18 (via Brisbane trade above).

Get Houston, 9 and Richmonds future 2nd. Retain future 1st.

That’s not a horrible outcome I agree on that.

I think Houston is a gun but I am not sure his play off half back is as big a requirement as some class in the midfield.

So he would rather North than us? Stuff him then

Maybe he’s just doing what we expect of Melbourne players who want to go back to their home state and saying he’ll go to any Vic club that can satisfy Port…?

Houston situation is setting up to be embarrassing. Two first rounders is absurd.

I actually think we’ll land him with our F1 and some swaps to look complicated. Saves face for Port pretending that it could be top 5 pick next year and sends Houston to Vic.

Cal Twomey confirmed that it was Houston that rejected us rather than us rejecting him on the theory that our first round draft pick became far better than expected.

Said he was all but a Demon mid season, and had agreed to sign with the MFC until we imploded.

Well done Dees 👍

We dropped the bag on this one

From reports we had him locked in mid-way through the season until Trac comes out and makes the FC look like absolute tools

Petracca has a lot to answer for. And i reckon he has a lot to do with why Clarry might leave.

It's not unsalvageable though. 5 minutes with Maxy and I'm sure DH would have a better understanding of everything.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
